Currently on my queue for Netflix, though there's a bit of a wait, unfortunately.

And you forgot Cillian Murphy, Chris.

Sorry.
Well, based on reviews that had peeps saying it was bad 'cause they couldn't understand the ending, and others comparing it to 2001 and Solaris such, I bought it.

Love-y the slow, thinking, crazy space flick.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I've seen it. More Tarkovsky's Solaris than 2001 though, and by that I mean not so good, since except for a couple of scenes the original Solaris is a muddled mess.

So much potential, but I was very disappointed.

I suppose that means Chris is gonna love it!

I just saw it, and I had rather high-ish expectations, being a fan-ish type person of the director and Cillian Murphy. I can't say I'll make the effort to see it again. I'm not sure if I understood, unfortunately by the end I think I wasn't paying much attention to it - I got the gist of it, but it was wierd and slow enough to need a more dedicated audience than I was at the time.

Visually, very cool.

Hey Chris

Yeah, I've seen this and I liked it. It's definitely one more for the brain than the adrenaline.
It's not a perfect film and a mate was a little bit bored with it (but then he's a bit slow in the brain pan anyway and refuses to watch old BW films coz he says they are all crap).
I thought all the acting was fine and the film itself looked great with all the bright light mixed with dark shadows.

There are touches of 2001 in it but Solaris is probably the closest comparison, with a bit of Event Horizon as well.

I got the ending, and didn't think it was that hard to figure, unless I missed the point completely. But I won't post what I thought until Chris says he's seen it so as not to spoil him.

I'll go out on a limb and say that I think you'll like it, knowing some of the other films you've posted about.

Looking forward to your review....

As long as you don't think too hard about the science, e.g. by asking questions such as what could possibly go wrong with the sun that could be fixed with a manhattan-sized nuke, and even then, why said nuke couldn't be deliverd by an unmanned probe, avoiding the extremely tricky and expensive problem of keeping squishy organic humans alive (and at least paying lip service to the possibility of bringing them back).

Oh, and we had the old "Space is cold, therefore 2 seconds exposure will turn you into a popsicle" one, too...

Apart from that, it was enjoyable, atmospheric and visually impressive.

Enjoy the blatent knock-off in Doctor Who (new) series 3, too...

Visually stunning, very atmospheric, very 2001-like, but it under-used Yeoh (GRRRRR), and it inexplicably morphs into 28 Days Later at the end ...I had a marginally good time with it...but I think I'll enjoy it much more on the second viewing.
There were a lot of good moments where I felt like I was seeing the actual manifestation of the Devil himself in that crazy crewman...much better than Event Horizon- a blatantly comic book take on the idea.

Nice final minute to the flick...

*Similar movie comparison rating: Way better than Event Horizon/ not quite as good as Supernova
...worth a look at least.

It wasn't a nuke; it was a hyper-accellerated plutonium atom core-sourced neutrino cluster held in stasis by fission reaction and magnified upon detination by quantum injectors, re-igniting the smallest fragment of our Sun- but that's all that would be necessary to begin the cycle that was interrupted by momentary dimensional intrusion by a galaxy with a black hole near the opening of the event.

Your science is obviously very limited.

Sorry. How silly of me not to notice. If only they'd pointed that out in the film...

Meanwhile - in another thread:

Erm... Supernova? Is that the one where, when they went FTL, everybody had to travel in a special pod to avoid getting spaghettified, and yet, on a ship apparently designed for rescue/paramedic missions they had exactly one pod per crewmember, with no spares...?

Just to repeat - I highly commend the "Dr Who" episode "42" which covers much the same ground as Sunshine/Supernova/Event Horizon (including the dodgy technological plot devices, from the series that gave us "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow") while only wasting 42 minutes of your life.

I don't get why everybody seems to have forgotten the spottie Rose Byrne. Although this was her least memorable role, if one of her largest.
Most of the scenes that should have given dramatic impact seemed to me derivative of Space Cowboys, and the rest seemed languid and lethargic.
Without a lot of andvance info, I was still disappointed.

Okay, after-second-viewing review:
Incredibly good-looking tripe.
Event Horizon WAS a superior film after all....
Once you get past the dazzling visuals, all you have is one BIG plot hole, with almost zero character.
I won't waste time listing the problems- they are so many.
I must jettison this DVD asap.

SQUID

It was a really beautiful film and it somehow kept me glued to the screen for the entire movie. And yet it was completely random and ultimately pointless. Sci-fi turned slasher? Ummm, okay.

Too much cast, none all that interesting--which made me question whether saving the human race and making this film merited the time and effort. I had some hopes for this film since it was another Danny Boyle and Cillian Murphy team up. But those hopes crashed and burned.

I have it in BluRay even. :) I like the visual effects. And I have a thing for Cassie (Rose Byrne), who just happens to be incredibly hot! -- what irony, lol.

Other than that, it's much better than Event Horizon. But nowhere near Serenity. Still, it's worth the see.

America loves a winner!

Boy, am I glad I didn't waste my $$ on this piece of go se in the theatre. Visually spectacular, but I'm left speechless at the woeful "story" here.

Many have compared this to Event Horizon. I hated Event Horizon. While this didn't suck as much, it was a bigger disappointment.

P.S. Rose Byrne is zesty.

INIRE

Oddly, i watched it tonight and just happened to wander over here, soo....

It looks like hard science fiction, but ain't.
It wants to be a drama and deeply introspective to the human condition.
The last reel made my head hurt (and not in a good way). Almost dream-sequence scenes with a slasher survivor-cum-boarder reminded me of reavers more than anything, and I have a sense thats not what Boyle had in mind. i could be wrong.

A 'B-': easy on the eyes but enormously implausible, and yet with the right combo of caffeine and hard cider, I dinna care.
