OK, it's been 3 weeks, have not seen a mention.

The Happening, film by M. Night Shamaylan, starring Marky Mark in a role written for him.

Anybody else seen?
Anybody else liked?
Of those that have seen, how many have figured out what the trigger is? What triggered on/release, and did you figure out what triggered off?

Most I have talked to who didn't get it or thought it was lame, didn't seem to figure it out, didn't pay attention. Another thing I like about M. Night's flicks, he didn't spell it all out again this time, the viewer needs to think a little to fully get it.

How many think the hot dog guy died? How many think the hot dog guy survived? Or at least survived the last scene we see him in? How many think the fate of the hot dog guy (and his wife) was too ambiguous?

I thought the whole thing was fairly obvious and completely weak from the beginning. I have to say this is likely the worst movie ever made. That's right, "Crow: City of Angels" is 100 times better than this.

I saw it for free, and I felt robbed. Save what's left of your sanity and don't waste your time on this one.

I agree with Jade. It sucked! Big time. I'm no longer going to watch M. Night Shamahamayamalan movies. (Yes I know that's not how you spell his name.)

He lost me at The Sixth Sense.

I guess you're not into answering the queries.

How did he lose you at The Sixth Sense - you didn't get it, or you think it was sci-fi or fantasy? Doesn't mesh with your religion? What?

Well, I actually really liked Sixth Sense. I thought it was well done, but I've not seen it in a while. My favourite band did a nice song that reminds me of the feel of that film.

Pt. 1

Pt. 2
Yes it's a long song.
The Invisible Man. About a man who doesn't know he's dead, following his lover around.

I think I liked Unbreakable and Signs too. Tough I may have given him more of a break on those due to the sixth sense being fun for me. I didn't watch The Village or Lady in Water. The previews made the premise seem either obvious or uninteresting. I tried The Happening out of curiosity, due mostly to it being free. I regret that. Waste of time and made me feel ill when I'm pretty happy now spending my time smiling and laughing and enjoying all the little joys of life, love, and the wonder that is this existence.
There are scenes in this film where just the sounds of things happening over the hills make me cringe and want desperately to be sick. To write it all off as some eco-nutzi BS is just a disgrace. I miss being surprised by twists in movies (Usual Suspects rocks), and I miss those twists not being preachy BS based on the lies and deceit of the weak. I want writers to surprise me without trying to make me feel bad. If I want to feel bad, I'll look at the state of the world, not spend a couple of hours trying to escape it to have it pointed out to me again by people who misunderstand it.
well, done with this. Off to dance in the joy that is life and love and happiness. I hope everyone can find it. It's waiting for us all. So glad I'm finally ready for it.
Cheers my Browncoat brethren. Be excellent to each other.

So if I understand correctly, you consider this to just be ecology/environmental propoganda? And you don't believe any of the scientific studies the hot dog guy quotes or refers to, and you didn't understand what the trigger was, for triggering on or for off.
That right?

I figured that the trigger was intense emotion. When the hermit lady triggered it she was in a crazy rage in her garden. There was a group eariler in the film that triggered it and right before it happened 2 guys were shouting at each other about "which way to go". When the group dies in the geo tracker with the slit roof canopy, there was a girl in the backseat having a panic attack. With all the rest of the talk about how talking to plants makes them respond, I figured that the trigger was obvious.

It doesn't change the fact that I still thought the movie a bore. M Night's films have been in slow decline. Sixth sense was astonishing and The Village was good. Signs & Unbreakable were average at best. Lady in the Water was too contrived. Now with The Happening his storytelling is getting tedious.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.

This guy's movies aren't very good IMO. I didn't go see Lady in the Water and I'm not going to see this one either. So spoil away. What was the plot this time? From the sound of it some plants got mad and made people die? Oooooh spooky!

Heck I really only saw his other movies out of shear boredom. Why oh why doesn't Hollywood trust writers like Joss who actually create good movies?

I think you almost have it. I've been sort of surprised at how few do.
The hot dog guy was the prophet of the story, providing the information that everybody else ignored (like River), he was relating the studies showing plants sensitivity to emotion (just ignore what he says about hot dogs). The people who had anger and/or hate would trigger the plants, and anybody close to those would fall victim, dependent upon prevailing winds. Anger/hate is detected as dangerous by plants. Larger groups make the trigger almost a certainty, and being in a large city almost guarantees anger/hate. Love triggers it off, the plants sense love and have no way to know if it is love towards flora or other humans. This love is what saved the 3 who ventured outside, and the wind dissipated the aromatics away from them.
Because the hot dog guy and his wife loved plants, even if they might be in fear of them, I suspect he survived the scene we saw, he was the lead guy in the second sub-group, and his love for plants effectively was the protective barrier between the arguing group and the second group behind him, as long as there was crosswind. The horror the second group felt should have prevented them from becoming angry/hateful at that point, and I think that second group survived that scene, and perhaps until it ceased.

If you want something eco-bizarro involving plants, check out 'Day of the Triffids'. The book is a little dated in some respects, but otherwise, John Wyndham was well ahead of his time in respects of bio-artificing and what buggering about with the planet could result in.

I liked 'Sixth Sense' (and got it about half way through), thought 'Signs' had some good points, and haven't seen anything else. Doubt I'll watch this one, either - I like a little more happy in my films.
