Any thoughts on last night's season premiere Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, including the cool surprise ending?

I thought it was great. The beginning was kind of odd as first but it grew on me after a while. I'm pretty sure that

Select to view spoiler:

John escaped and killed the guy who was attacking his mom.

Overall I like the fact that John is starting to sack up and start acting like the man he is going to be someday.

The end was awesome. I saw the previews and knew that something like that was coming, but I just didn't know where or when.

I totally loved it! I couldn't believe how good it was. This show is heading off into amazing new areas with new characters like Shirley Manson. Summer Glau was on screen for half the show, and her performance was brilliant. It really looks like a winner this year.

She certainly did an exceptional job. I almost found myself feeling bad for a terminator when she was pleading with John. My only gripe with the episode was how John managed to fix her chip just by scraping it with a knife. He sure as hell didn't have a computer or any diagnostic equipment handy to check the "repairs".

Before he pulled the chip, she was telling him she was aware of the damage, but had now fixed it. She would not have said that if it were not true, because all her systems had reported was "damage", and apparently her self repair capability had sorted out that identifying John Connor as someone to be terminated was cause for some chip damage to be fixed (apparently with some reprogramming, as per the scene where her terminate command is overridden.)

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

The pre-show word was that some major characters were to be killed off, and as they were getting ready to burn our girl, I was wondering what kind of hit their ratings would take if they did kill off Cameron?

personally I don't see that happening:

Select to view spoiler:

they've spent a lot of money to promote Summer/Cameron, she is featured in most of their ads,
so I'm guessing that they will kill off one of the secondary characters (maybe several of them) because changing those out always shake things up without losing fans...

I was a little disappointed last night, I thought it was too action packed without enough plot...
but of course it isn't like I'll stop watching! LOL

Yes, killing off that character would have been bold, and for a moment I was thinking the producers may have gotten a bit too bold.

They did do a hell of a set-up, and they could have run it out a bit more for a hell of a episode cliff hanger.

After watching the premiere, I'm convinced that people got their wires crossed on the rumor about one of the main characters being killed. It's been known for a while that one of the regulars won't survive the season, but I think somehow that got confused with 'someone won't survive the premiere'.

yeah, I thought they said at Comic Con that someone wouldn't survive the year...

I'm still stuck on the potentially horrific misjudgement of a T-1000 turning itself into a urinal.

But yes, the concensus on another board is that John was gambling that Cameron was telling the truth when she said she was okay.

Also, it's downright eerie how much John looks like Cromartie's new face. . .

I liked that John stood up to Sarah, when she ordered Cameron to be destroyed. She raised John to be the leader Kyle Reese said he would be, so she shouldn't be surprised he's going to be making his own decisions more and more.

I liked that scene, almost as much as the similar cut scene in T2, when Sarah goes to smash the Arnold's T-100 chip, and he angrily shouts "how am I supposed to be this great leader, if I can't even get my own mother to listen to me!"

We need to see John growing into the leader we know he becomes, so scenes like this are great!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

A fantastic episode. What a great opener.

I'll split my reply into sections.

After the explosion

Select to view spoiler:

When Cameron was walking with the limp into the house and all the way through that scene her expression never changed. And I loved the way she walked with the damaged leg. It was brilliantly done by Summer who made it look like she walking normally but was just unable to. Not like a human who would be in agony.

John and Sarah

Select to view spoiler:

I think it was pretty clear from the first look that Sarah gave John that he killed the guy to save his mother. And it is nice to see him start to become the man he will be. Previews of later episodes hint that we will see more of this.
And is this the first time we see him threaten someone with a gun?

Cameron's chip

Select to view spoiler:

I actually disagree with the above posts about this situation. The first self-diagnostic Cameron did indicated that the chips integrity was damaged. This sent her off to terminate John. She was attempting to kill John when she was trapped between the vehicles. Then when she was under threat she started crying that she was alright. That's one hell of a sudden change around to go from a killer to normal in a few seconds.
No, I think Sarah was right she was telling John what he wanted to hear to save herself, knowing him as well as she does she knew that she could plant doubt in his mind.
Then when he switches Cameron back on she identified John and initially it flashed to terminate him but then she overrode the progamming. I think she deliberately chose not to kill him. It wasn't that she's repaired herself but more that she'd reprogrammed herself.
Part of my reasoning on this comes from the fact that he had killed her, he'd stopped her, and then he still brought her back to life. In her advanced 'brain' she must be wondering why he did this. This is further hinted at by her comments on the resurrection of Jesus, something she was obviously thinking about regarding her own 'resurrection'.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

The urinal

Select to view spoiler:

It was pretty obvious that the guy was being watched/listened to but I was thinking a hidden camera or microphone. And then she morphed. What a great surprise that they brought the T-1000 in, but a very nice touch.

Who will die?

Select to view spoiler:

John can't die. Sarah's in the title of the show so it's not her. Cameron is too popular and central to the show. Derek apparently is a fave but I don't think it's him. He'll die in later seasons. Cromartie is a no as they've established him as the main baddie Terminator. That leaves Ellison and Charley. Ellison is still too important I think and has a bigger part to play yet so that unfortunately leaves Charley and his death will provide a major tregedy for Sarah and John, something to leave them in a bad way.

If I had one minor complaint about the episode its that I wish they had taken two episodes to resolve Bad Cameron. It would have been nice to see her damaged longer in a relentless pursuit using the information she has about them to track them.
But that's a minor fault. Maybe one day 'she'll be back'.

The "Who will die" question is meant to be fuzzy for the fans but some of the recent (separate) interviews sort of make me worry. In one interview, someone (not a cast member) says that, yes, someone will die and that character knows about it. In another interview, Thomas says someone will die but they are keeping it secret, to which Summer replies, "I know".

Select to view spoiler:

Now we all know that death in the Whedonverse is not always permanent, and technically Cameron did die (again) when John pulled her chip. I guess the question is, can a robot die?

Everyone really liked it? I thought it was pretty blah. Somehow an explosion messed with Cameron's programming and then scrapping the chip off fixed it? Please.

Cameron would have killed Sarah when she had the chance. That was dumb too.

They should have never have shown us Cameron's point of view when she said she promised not to kill John. It would be much better to leave us wondering whether she's lying of not. Heck if I was her I'd assume John handed her an empty gun anyway and that it was all a test.

And the big dramatic "I'm going to lite the car on fire for no reason now" and the "I'm cutting my hair grrr" scenes where pretty lame.

I hope they have a good back story for that T1000 because it was not acting like a terminator at all IMO.

To me it felt like most of the positive momentum from the end of last season completely died and the show went right back to mindless writing.

Just to respond to the first question above, in my years of repairing electronic devices I can tell you that cleaning contacts has fixed many, many problems. Not being familiar with the cranial construction techniques used in creating Terminators, I would guess that early versions were failing(going bad) due to poor electronic connections due to moisture, oxidation, vibration, etc. I assume those problems went away with the liquid metal versions (T-1000's).

There were a number of people Cameron (and other Terminators as well) could have killed, but didn't, as that was not their mission.

If Cameron's programming still told her to kill John, she could have beaten him to death with the gun he handed her, or crammed the empty magazine down his throat. Point is, when John inserted her chip and she woke up, if she was going to kill John she would have, no weapon needed.

In my years of programming I've never seen an explosion alter software and not only alter it but somehow leave it in a working state after being altered. That would be one extremely rare event.

I guess Cameron also has super special flame retardant skin upgrades cause I figured after the car bomb she'd be skinless to start this season. Instead she has maybe some minor burns on her face and a few cuts. That's pretty impressive too.

I'm thinking this show is on notice. It's got a few more episodes to turn things around or it might drop off the list. Especially considering it will be up against Chuck and How I Met Your Mother fairly soon. Those two are going to leave this one in the dust IMO.

Personally, I was a little skeptical about him fixing it like that too. But if he had really fixed it

Select to view spoiler:

why would she have to override it? Perhaps it still is damaged and maybe all he was doing was cleaning it? Pretty weak, I know, but it's a little early to judge. Personally I think the whole redemption and resurrection thing is going to play a major part. Also, don't presume what she'd do about Sarah. We don't know how bad her programming was damaged or what her real intent is yet...so let's give 'em the benifit of the doubt.

I did like her pleading when he's dismantling her though. Scray about how something like that can manipulate so easily; I actually felt a sort of pity/revulsion thing when I saw it, just because I knew it was fake, but Summer was really looking like she was scared and about to cry.

Completely agree. The makers have basically said that T3 has no bearing on what they are doing. All events in that movie should be ignored in relation to this series. That timeline will continue in T4.

As for Cameron being skinless then yes, if TV shows were to be realistic then she would at least have had her clothes burnt away if not all her skin as well. I haven't seen a show yet that treats this properly where a hero character is concerned. Look at Smallville and the amount of explosions Clark Kent is in. Fair enough he won't be damaged but all his clothes do is smoke a little and gain a few holes. This happens in a lot of other shows
Part of Camerons appeal for the makers is that it is Summer playing her and the way she looks. Shallow as it may be it is true. They are not gonna mess up the pretties too much or for a long time because of that appeal. That's why we get a few cuts and marks and not more serious damage.
It may not be realistic but it's the way it is.

You're both ignoring the obvious: Her hair!

In the first film, Arnold's hair was much longer before he jumped through a fireball... and went the rest of the movie with a buzz cut (which seemed to be the default hairstyle as of T2).

When the Jeep blew up at the end of Season 1, I thought, "Oh, great, Summer's gonna have to do the Natalie Portman thing!"
But except for being a bit bedraggled, the hair was fine.
Then the water heater blew up behind her — and, again, the hair was fine.
