Yeah, master of list-threads, that's me.

So if you can boil it down, which are the best two, preferably with different actors playing Bond just to mix it up. Or not, as you wish.

For me, It's DEFINITELY Goldfinger, and Tomorrow Never Dies. The absolute best of Sean & Pierce.

Important people don't do field work.

For me, and I'm ready for the flak, but I read the Ian Fleming books before I saw most of the movies, so I'm going with "Thunderball" with Sean Connery, and "Casino Royale" with Daniel Craig.

I'm uncertain, but I think these two really kind of capture the Bond from the books. "Goldeneye" with Pierce and "License to Kill" with Timothy Dalton were both excellent, I thought, with Timthy really chanelling the dark side of Bond. I mean, what's the body count in that movie? And the people he kills, he really offs in a horrible fashion.

You'll notice no Roger Moore made the list. I'll stand by that.

Ok I'm no expert with the Bond films so I'll apologise in advance for my favourite Bond being "License to Kill" and 2nd "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"

License had an edge to it and Magesty's had the best score.

I really like the Daniel Craig films so far, they've truly impressed me. I'm not sure which two I'd pick if I had to, but it would be any two of these:

Sean Connery -
You Only Live Twice
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger

Roger Moore -
For Your Eyes Only

Timothy Dalton -
The Living Daylights

Pierce Brosnan -
Tomorrow Never Dies
Goldeneye

Daniel Craig -
Casino Royale
Quantum of Solace

These are in order of more favourite to less under the actors, and the actors are in chronological order, so no significance there. The only ones I'm not sure about the order of are Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace; they were such different movies but both truly impressed me as films.

I am picking the last two,

Casino Royale and Quantum

Daniel Craig is excellent, but what gives them the edge for me is the writing, back story, character development, etc is well beyond the shallower Bond in previous movies.

I could see any of the previous Bonds being better with such storytelling, but Daniel Craigs' blunt instrument would be harder to picture from some of the more " cultured " actors

added Craigs almost constant sneer, replaced by a quick grin when he pulls something off is also great..

Like in Casino Royale when the cops at the airport beat him, shackle him and start to drag him off, and the bomber sets off the charge which Craig relocated to the bombers own belt.......

great fun

Lets party like its 1939

Thunderball.
Quantum of Solace.

It may very well be too early to include QoS after seeing it, but it seemed to have much more story than I expected. I watch most movies in Cinema, so perhaps I've just been lowering my expectations so much with most releases lately. Casino Royale had a bit of story as well. Many of the Roger Moore items just seemed...too glossy - apparently he objected to violence from a man Licensed to Kill.

"Goldfinger" is second best. Bestest is "The Spy Who Loved Me." Even though Connery is far the superior Bond SWLM got everything else spot on right: strong female lead, rich megalomaniac, outrageous gadgets, and very well paced action set pieces.

You Only Move Twice with Homer Simpson....

Sorry...
You Only Live Twice with Connery and Casino Royale with Craig.

But there are others that come darn close to these.

Out of curiousity does anyone here consider Never Say Never Again part of the canon or do you even like it, considering that it is a remake from another studio but it also Connery playing Bond?
Personally I don't consider it canon and would much sooner watch Thunderball (I generally ignore that it's out there).

At the time it came out, I was SO hungry for a non-Moore comedy Bond that I welcomed it with open arms, and enjoyed it immensely- thank GOD it was made!!!
Today, well,... it hasn't aged too well, aside from the cool title song, so actually, I place it in with some of the better Moore films like For Your Eyes Only in terms of quality.
And CANNON???? No sucha thing in the Bond series after Diamonds Are Forever, my friend. It's all wild & wooly various interpretations- and I'm okay with that.

The top two Bond Movies are, From Russia with Love. Sean Connery really defines the role of the hard edge Bond in this one.

Casino Royale (The recent version, not the David Niven Vehicle). Stays true to the start in Russia with Love.

I don't recall the score being particularly heinous but I haven't seen the film in a while and maybe with a couple decades of difference I'd notice it being disco? Or maybe it'd be OK 'cause Moore was the Disco Bond.

That's a fair and valid point, although I was thinking more in terms of movie canon than novel canon. As in the main set of movies we know that were made by Eon. Although I vaguely recall that the studio owning the franchise rights (United Artists??) has bought it so that it could be considered part of the 'team'.

I too liked Never Say Never Again when it came out, but I hadn't seen Thunderball at that point. I believe it was the first Bond I saw on the big screen as well. When I did see Thunderball it kind of tarnished my thoughts on NSNA and I've only watched it once since then. Strange how some things can do that.

I don't mind whether they stick to the novels or not (are there any stories left?) just as long as they make a good movie.

Yeah, Thunderball blows the s**t outta NSNA as a movie, despite the lame song over the opening credits (sorry Tom, Bond movies open with a woman singing).
NSNA was just an eighties 007 band aid to hold us until Living Daylights, which in turn was just to hold us until the best Bond film since Thunderball, GOLDENEYE!!!

I'm quite torn on this. One of them I feel must be Goldfinger - the best Bond versus the best villain with the best sidekick with a brilliant plot - I have a theory that the Iraq war is pretty much a redo of the movie (the book is similar but has Goldfinger stealing the gold instead or at least trying to).

The second movie... hmm. I used to love Octopussy - it does have an excellent teaser (the plane going sideways through the hanger) and a larger role for Q who I adore. Licence to Kill was an interesting change of pace, GoldenEye gave us one of the best video games of all time... tricky, tricky.

I'm going to go with Casino Royale but with the foreknowledge that in a decade or so it may join the above as a movie that was of its time and thus will be diminished by the years. I did enjoy Quantum of Solace but would much prefer it if the director didn't push the edit button every 0.5 seconds during the action sequences.

There all great. I did not know Chrisisll was a Bond fan. I knew he was a Cliff Richard fan. Hmm thimgs you learn about people. Best Bond movie. You really have to understand its not about the book, actors, gadgets, or story lines. Which ones you liked. Ok Goldfinger no1. The no2 for me was Thunderball for 30 years but I've knock it to no4 brought up Diamonds are Forever in the 2 spot. I have to give a nod to Roger Moore in the 3 spot The Man with the Golden Gun. This one is a good one with Christorpher Lee. Dracula vs Jimmy Bond can't get no better. The best killers in the world going head to head. The shooting scene still holds up. Now if we broke down the flicks to hottest chicks, gadgets, story lines, action, scenery, and time frames of the day well thats a whole different ball game. If your gonna be a fan you have to sit through the ozzy guy as Bond but the movie is good. Moore is continuation of this Bond. Pierce a combo of Connery and Moore. Craig a sloppy 007 but is in a very well written Bond sequels. Killer quotes Bond to Goldfinger Do you expect me to talk no Mr Bond I expect you to die. Bond to M I know the rules no deals. Love those films.
