I wasn't around in the 50's and was only a child during the 60's, but I think either Star Trek or Lost in Space for the 60's.

For the 1970's I would say either Battlestar Galactica, or Space 1999.

For the 1980's I think Star Trek: The Next Generation even though it portrayed a sanitized future.

In the 1990s there was an awful lot to choose from as far as Sci-Fi goes, but I think I will say Star Trek Voyager, especially the first few years where things were not as sanitized and the crew had to struggle between its survival and its ethics.

For the naught years of the 21st century I say Firefly hands down.

Hey, loved Magnum, Higgins, and "the lads" (Higgins' killer guard dogs)! "Did You See The Sunrise" was probably the best single hour of TV drama during the 80s! Hell Miami Vice even blatantly ripped off the ending of that episode!

But......Miami Vice re-defined the look and feel of TV. As cheezy as it looks now. Vice was COOL! Eddie Olmos as Castillo, is still COOL!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Never was an X-Files fan. Sorry, but never could buy that Scully could somehow explain away anything that didn't fit into her world view. She saw to much weird ass shit, to not be a fellow believer with Mulder.

Yes, Buffy was better! Joss took the biggest cliche' in the horror genre' and turned it on it's head.

Can the blonde damsel actually be the hero? Yes!
Can a series with a name this silly, be mature enough for adults to watch? Yes.
Can it's obvious metaphors relate to teens more realistically than other non-genre shows like 90210 or Dawson's Creek could ever dream of? Hell Yes!
Is it the best series the late WB network ever aired? DUH!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Sorry, Firefly, but I've got 7 seasons of The Shield versus a half-season of Firefly. And the worst episode of The Shield was still pretty damned good TV.

If I included premium-cable shows, I'd have The Wire on there somewhere, too.

I'm (not) sorry, but I'm right there with cljohnston
It is without a doubt the best show thats come along in a while. Ok, so theres the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, which I might have to agree on occasion is a better show - but LOST proves to be everything a good tv show should be
Emphasis on character, through the use of flashbacks and later flashforwards (i dont think thats a spoiler by now) was an ingenius way in getting into the heads of the characters
Plus its got an intriguing set of questions which are slowly being answered. Yes, I dont care that the show takes its time, at least we're getting the answers. In fact if theres anything bad to be said about these latest episodes its that things are going at so fast a pace, with lots of information being revealed, that i miss the days when it took its time.

I cant believe nobodys mentioned ANGEL(or maybe they've had and I missed it). IMHO it was a much stronger show than Buffy, which had most of season 5 and 6 producing duff episodes. Apart from a few missteps during season 4, it was consistently good. One of the best pilots, one of the best series finales, and a hell of a lot fantastic episodes in between. ANGEL (if it hadnt been for LOST and BSG, would have been my next choice)

I was born in the 80s and didn't really develop a passion for watching serialised tv until MY SO-CALLED LIFE in the mid 90s
However my choice for show of that decade undoubtedly belongs to THE X FILES. I was already a borderline geek anyway growing up with Star Wars and all its toys and comics, but X FILES brought out the obsessive fan, and collector in me. And it still holds up to this day
(pfff, Supernatural)

The 50's and 60's were heavy into westerns. I could not count them all. Roy Rodgers had his own show. It is not surprising that several got mentioned. Even Rod Serling wrote a western called the "The Loner".

Hi-five to Needy and cljohnston for the LOST love.

Firefly holds a special place in my heart, and I included it on my list for that reason. but I can hardly even count it as a "series" and consider it more of a mini-series.

LOST, and IMO BSG, are flat-out the best "series" on TV the last decade or three.

I have watched 60s tv, its before my time but I enjoyed it. I think Trek beats the The Prisoner ...just. Also The Untouchables was great Mission Impossible was good and Scooby Doo works, Japan had a cult hit 'Speed Racer' and the old slapstick comedy comicbook Batman TV series of the 1960s, they had a cross over where the Batman fought The Green Hornet. I like some of the new-ish 'Dr Who' I tried to watch some old ones but can not, too dated for me.
