I don't know why, but this thought just popped into my head? Could Rick Deckard be a regular series kinda guy? Could tracking "skin jobs" hold viewers week in and week out?

Whattaya think?

Good god. Why?

It'd strip away all the metaphysical implications and reduce it to a moronic shoot em up

There actually was a Blade Runner series. It was actually called Total Recall 2070, but had more in common with Blade Runner than Total Recall. It wasn't very good.

If it was done right, it would be pretty amazing sci-fi to tune into each week. There are so many different directions the series could go. I'd watch it, and buy it on Blu-Ray.

It definitely could be a series and a very good one if handled well.. Like TSCC it should not be "replicant of the week", cause that would be boring as hell.. Doesn´t have to be Deckard though.. Could have someone track a team of replicants over a season and slowly discovering things about himself, like the ambiguity in Blade Runner as to wether Deckards a replicant himself. Even though it´s clear in the book that he´s not but still

"Summer Glau can simply walk into Mordor.."

There ya go - that's more the kind of thing I was envisioning. Something more spiritually akin to "Angel" than to Total Recall. Blade Runner teams tracking skin jobs, learning more and more about each other and what it means to be "human", and who qualifies and how. Cops who don't know if they're real or not, replicants who don't know if THEY'RE real or not, etc. It's a search for humanity, a search for purpose and redemption, and we SHOULD ask hard questions about these things.

I was going to post that myself.

I believe the producers said at the time they wanted to make a BR series, but could only get the rights to Total Recall.

And yeah, it wasn't very good.

I respectfully disagree. Definitely a merger of Blade Runner and TR, but the production quality and script was surprisingly good. For Canadian.

Tales of govt corruption run amok tends to kill a TV series pretty fast, for some reason...

I did watch every episode of it. So maybe it was better than most TV series, but then again I've a pretty low bar when it comes to sci-fi.

I think it would be very hard to pull off as a TV series, and chances are we would end up with something like the Total Recall series. And it definitely wouldn't be Deckard - then it would have to be a prequel. Even that may not work, depending on whether or not Deckard turns out to be ... Wait, maybe all bladerunners are actually ... ?! (watch the movie).

The best thing to do is probably to stay away from the movie and for the series to chart its own course, like Highlander did in the later seasons.

Shorter of breath, and one day closer to death ...

well if you read the book, it´s pretty clear that Deckard is not.. He actually takes the test himself

The answer to the OP is NO. Period.
Unless you'd want an existential series with not much action, which, actually, I'd be up for.

CYBERSNARK

Could easily end up like Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex --a lot of talky, existential drama, but peppered with humour and occasional flashes of wall-to-wall action (maybe some replicants don't just run and hide, but start banding together, infiltrating, and actively rebelling). The trick is balancing the "stand-alone" and "complex" episodes.

Pick up a few years after the movie. Not with Deckard, but with some other Blade Runner (or perhaps a team, instituted to prevent situations like "The Deckard Incident," where a lone-wolf agent went rogue --the team is designed to watch each others' backs, as well as to pool a variety of talents [perhaps even including a replicant "profiler," and a few specialists]). Stand-alone eps would be "replicant-of-the-week" hunts (or character-based dramas to flesh out the cast), but clues would gradually point to a deeper conspiracy:

-A well-placed public figure is causing political trouble, tring to get the team shut down.

-A replicator hunt causes one of the team to take a close look at a replicant-producing company, where they discover that a chunk of the company's records have been deleted.

-The team discovers how some replicants are "disappearing," and goes after a forger who makes a living creating false identities for replicant "refugees."

-The well-place public figure is suspected to have ties to a cyber-terrorist organization.

-The team goes after one of the forger's contacts --who turns out to have ties to the government.

-The agent discovers that among the deleted records is an entire line of replicants, produced decades ago and discontinued. "They've been erased, like they never existed."

-The team is framed and the government comes down on them.

-The agent discovers that the "hidden" replicants look exactly like their well-placed public figure.

-Much later, we reveal that the undercover replicant hasn't gone rogue --he's actually working for someone. . .

Why do Mars movies have a breathable atmosphere? That kills the suspension of disbelief for everyone who can read. Which Total Recall did tongue-in-cheek (it was just a dream?)

Total Recall 2070 used lots of neon like Blade Runner, with robots as the enemy. Except robots were taking over the planet, and winning.

Did Dekard dream of electric sheeple?

Rekall Corp was evil like Blue Sun. Mindcontrol program for hotties just like Firefly. Seems like somebody in the ivory towers cancells the topic of mindcontrol, for some reason.

Do you mean Philip K. Dick's Do androids dream of electric sheep? I haven't read that in decades, but IIRC it doesn't have much to do with the movie. Or is there a book based on the film? If there is, I haven't read it. Anyway, don't matter none what it says in any damn book, it's the movie and our imagination whut counts ...

Bladerunner was incredibly influential on a lot of anime, and Ghost in the Shell owes a lot to it. It would be great if someone could pull off a Bladerunner TV series or mini series which, in turn, was influenced by GitS. It's a circular industry, after all.

yep that´s the one.. well, the movie is based on that book and I´m pretty sure that Deckard takes the test in it and it´s proven that he´s not a replicant.. But Ridley Scott wanted him to be a replicant, I think

I have to start by saying that Red Planet was miles better than Mission to Mars.

At least Red Planet explained that Earth had begun terraforming Mars by seeding it with algae, and it appeared to be working, but then O2 levels began dropping. The expedition was expecting the normal Mars atmosphere, but the external sensors were knocked offline in the crash landing, so they didn't know that there was a breathable atmosphere until Kilmer's character opened his visor in a panic just before he would've suffocated when his suit's air ran out.
There was a fair bit of discussion amongst the surviving crew members as to how this could've happened, and why it shouldn't be possible.
The first draft of the script is actually quite a bit more scientifically accurate, i.e. the nematodes are described as worm-like rather than crab-like, etc.

I have to start by saying I couldn't agree more! And it features an increbly hot, young Commander 'Trinity' Bowman: that didn't exactly hurt either. :)

I concur with your assessments. I rewatched Mission to Mars just to be sure a few nights back. The story seems to have been edited by a 5 year old.

Yup, that's the one. Although I'm not sure keeping Dick's title would make it more likely to pull in an audience. Seems tons more people know the story better through Ridley Scott's eyes than throught Philip Dick's, but ain't that just the way of the world...

Anyhoo, it seems like a pretty good premise and a pretty good 'verse to explore some of what it means to be a human. I'm not so sure it would wreck that world to explore it. After all, wasn't Joss kind of asking the same questions with River and the Reavers? What's "human"? What's "monster"?

And there's not a lot wrong with having the usual "monster-of-the-week" episodes while the background story develops, is there? Seems like a world ripe with promise, a la Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, etc.

Yeah, but Mission to Mars had an incredibly hot, young Connie Nielsen. That might have been ALL that movie had going for it...
