Been wondering, but is there much push to have the next Doctor to be of another race, gender ? Not that i care much either way, but I've noticed a theme in the last 3 doctors. It seems odd, given how " progressive " the BBC is, that they'd stick w/ yet another version of the same sort.

Next Doctor will likely be another white Brit, I'm still trying to figure out how John Hurt plays into all this. Is he the 13th and last Doctor?

Meh...about time, he sucked.

Actually, I do think he is the weakest of the three new Doctors, but he really has grown on me. Hopefully they give him a great send off.

I wonder when they will do the change...Hmmm...I hear that Tennant will appear in the 50th Anniversary Special. Can you imagine the reaction if he reverts back into the Tennant version?

I agree on him being the weakest, but he's grown on me as well. If there's a drop off, it's not all that much as I use to think, between him and his 2 predecessors.

On Tennant, I've tried watching some of his new series, Spies of Warsaw, but after a few slow, plodding eps, it kinda lost me. Still may pick it up again. Anyone else following it ?

Not only will the next Doctor be a white Brit he'll likely be younger then Smith, which is why John Hurt confuses me.

*sigh* Matt Smith will always be my Doctor. I'll miss him.

Youngest ever? Yes, indeed. Best ever? I might not claim that, but he's still my favorite. Most fun ever? Oh, yes. And damn if he can't go from bouncy to deadly serious fast enough to make my heart skip a beat.

It's really a shame, too. I liked The Amy Pond Show fine, but I was glad to spend a bit more time with the Doctor.

According to someone who knows the mythology better than me, he's probably the lost Doctor, an incarnation that has been repressed. Or perhaps the Valeyard.

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

Hell, why not go for the double - is Gina Torres free?

Seriously, though, every time this comes up speculation on the new Doctor is a big thing in the UK press and the possibility of a female/black doctor is raised. Last time round, Patterson Joseph was supposedly in the running ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7699513.stm). This time, Idris Elba and several female candidates are in the frame See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22745398. However, the reality is that only the producers know what "the frame" really is, so this is all rumours and speculation.

Suffice to say, a race- or gender- change would not please all of the people all of the time, although, thinking about it, that's precisely why they should do it - give the writers and actors a bit of a challenge.

However, this time round, with the problem of the 13th regeneration looming, they do have a window of opportunity to kill off the current Doctor for good and have a new person take on his name.

As I'm not up to speed on all things Whovian, the whole ' Doctor' thing has always confused me. Same was with ' The Master'. These titles ... what exactly do they mean ? They appear to be of Gallifreyan origin, as other time lords refer to them by those names.

And does a time lord have a set # of regenerations, like cats have lives ? I mean, once 'The Doctor' is truly dead , then how can anyone else take his name ? He's the last ( mostly ) Time Lord, correct ? I mean, anyone else would just be 'Larry', or ' Phil ', masquerading as 'The Doctor '

For all we know the Doctor's real name may be Larry, what ever it is we'll learn in 3 more years who the 13th and final Doctor is, and we may learn what his real name is, AND we may learn why he keeps it secret.

I still want to know how John Hurt (great actor) fits into all this, I just hope the next season doesn't suck. If they don't do this right I may put my fist thru the TV screen.

On Gallifrey you chose what you're called. The given name is very private, and sharing them is part of a Time Lord wedding ceremony.

Each Time Lord is born with twelve regenerations, but they can somehow be stolen from each other. I guess there was an old episode of Doctor Who when the rest of Gallifrey was still thriving and the Doctor was on trial. Had he been found guilty, his regenerations would have been stolen by the Time Lord that killed him. (Which in this case was an alternate, unpleasant version of himself called the Valeyard, which is one of those things in Who that just hurts my head.)

Apparently seeds were planted in the spin-off Sarah Jane Adventures that the Doctor, being responsible for the deaths of so many Time Lords, had gained thousands of regenerations, but that hasn't been brought up on the actual show.

Thanks for the catch up, PR. That puts things in a bit better perspective. :)

So, in brief, the public names are sort of their street names ? And the Time Lords are just some wicked , bad ass galactic gang, huh?

I'll shut up now.

Thanks for the background info, PR.

I wasn't a huge fan when I was growing up (Tom Baker era) so I really don't know much of mythos. I just recently started watching the new seasons on Netflix and I'm hooked now.
Can't wait for the 50th anniversary special.
