Anyone remember it from 1994? I have a hazy memory of it being okay. Clancy Brown was in it.
Is this something Browncoats should check out?

I'm with you on the hazy-possibly goodness of the show. I THINK I liked it, but that was loooong ago.

Are my fellow Browncoats gonna force me to buy it to give the first real review?

OK.

I too have a hazy recollection of Earth 2 being..OK, from memory the show didnt last long either(I could be wrong).

I am much more eagerly anticipating the DVD release of Space Above and beyond(if it ever goes to DVD.....)

I just gave the box set to my wife for her Birthday present.. for last year.

Anyhoo, we started watching the pilot episode, and it reconfirmed my previous opinions of the show. Mind you, I haven't seen all of the first season, only half or so. (Edited to clarify I saw half the season when it first aired.)

Overall, I'd rate it a mixed bag. It has some unique elements (i.e. TWO sentient races that are quite different, a used-up Earth, most of the cast never having been on a planet before) and some nice touches (genetic modifications to set up for a career path, cats being so expensive to keep on a space station only millionares can own them). But it also disappoints from time to time (the 'Dr Smith' character- Morgan). I always felt it should have felt more dire; sometimes it comes off as too sterile.

YANKSNO1

I remember watching this show (along with Sea-Quest, now that was a great show) and thinking it was just OK. I had the feeling it had it's potential, but were never put it all together. Not a huge fan of the show, but watched it b/c it came on before (or after, can't remember) SeaQuest. Won't be buying the DVDs (or even renting), but can't wait for SeaQuest to come out on DVD. That, and Growing Pains as the other series I really want out.

My wife and I are now about two-thirds through the boxset, and I must say it's better than I remembered. They seem to run two or three episode 'mini-arcs', and several of these are compelling. Especially enjoyed the one with the doc, as well as the moon cross/Mary. The differences between the future and our time are slight, but there. And they don't hit you over the head, either; a lot of things are subtle (i.e. they all are weary of winter after only twenty-some days). I gotta say, I'm enjoying it.

So, Chrisisall, did you buy it?

I've heard this time and time again over the years but S:AAB may be coming to DVD:

Failing that theres a guy over here in the UK who is selling an Unoffical copy made from the screening tapes, so there high-quality and free of ads.

I remember Earth2 came out about the same time as S:AAB over here on the Sci-Fi channel. I remember it being really quite good, but never getting into it because I could never catch an episode from one week to another...

I recall it being good, but not something I felt compelled to watch. It does have one tie to Firefly though. According to the imdb, Rebecca Gayheart who plays Bess Martin was, "Originally cast in the role of Inara, on the short-lived TV series Firefly, but was replaced (by Morena Baccarin) after one day's shooting."

Okay, Cisall, here's my final review. *Ahem* Keep in mind that we seem to look for different things in a show.

Overall, I liked it, but what rate it about 6 or 7 out of 10 (10 being Firefly, of course). Hardly any arse-whumping, fighting or explosions, but still some tension from situations. Characters are fairly well developed. Most plots are "strange, original situation threatens members of group" and "learn to trust the planet". It is well thought out, and has a lot of subtle details that are glimpses into a realistic future.

IMHO, I would rate it as equivalent quality-wise to DA or S:AAB, but it does NOT feature lots of fighting like they do.

Oh, and some episodes are out of order. The third-to-last (All about Eve) is the finale, the second-to-last (Natural Born Grendlers) should probably not have been show, and wasn't intended to until the end. It takes place fairly early, and contradicts other episodes. The last (Flower Child) should be right before All about Eve or so.

Okay, good review. I don't always need fighting in my entertainment (although it DOES seem to usually work out that way...), I love Solaris and Firestarter, for instance.

It's on my list Chrisisall

I love Firestarter and Solaris, too! With Solaris, though, I think the book is best.

Oh, I definitly remember Earth 2. I watched it when I was little. Tim Currie was in the later episodes as I remember. And I remember Rebecca Gayheart as mentioned. There was that kid Uley and his sister...what was her name?

I watched SeaQuest too! It's so sad because Lucus (wasn't that his name?) was my favorite character and the actor killed himself. I was so despondant to hear that because I was also a fan of Never Ending Stories and Side Kicks. But I really liked the dolphin, Darwin. Hey I was little when that show was on.

Ok. I just watched the first 5 episodes out of a vague curiosity and I am finding them Hi-larious! This show is a prime example of some great and compelling sci-fi ideas that are all half-baked in the execution. there are many very cool concepts that are all mishandled terribly. Good actors with some terrible dialogue. (well, not all good actors but more good than bad)It succeeds in being excellent campy entertainment though. I agree with the 7 out of 10 if you care for a bit of cheese in your sci-fi diet it's some good fun.

Seaquest...

I heard somewhere that the actor in question killed himself because he was so embarrassed to have participated in... Seaquest.

Space, Above and Beyond! Now there is a show i've been eagerly awaiting on DVD.(Someone tell me when its official please)

This was an awesome - especially for 1994 - SF show. It had really good special effects, stories, acting and an actual moral that if you use up our Earth we'd better have somewhere nice to go.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was 1st in line to order it from amazon.ca. In fact, I was sending (?) Universal an email every year asking them to release it on dvd.

My one and only complaint is that the dvd eps don't handle greys very well. They pixellate and strobe sometimes - presumably b/c the show was shot on analog film and then transferred to digital. Still I'll take it!

Does have a 'final' episode, you know, end on a hopeful note, or does it just *end*?
Edit: All About Eve, I mean...does it end seeming like they'll be able to get off planet?

This would make all the difference to me if it seemed like all would end up well.

Sorry, Cisall, I was out for a bit.

All about Eve has a typical cliffhanger ending. What will happen to one of our characters. Note that they do kill a few (two out of sixteen?) characters during the show. How they would've resolved the cliffhanger is beyond me. Remember that their goal was to make it to the West Coast to set up camp and prep for the major colony ship, not leave the planet. Failure to get there in time would mean the later colonists would be screwed. They were maybe halfway(?), and would have probably spend at least the next season finishing the journey. On the other hand, in some ways it's not too hard to figure out where they were going with the show, especially thanks to a "glimpse of the future" episode.

I guess it boils down to "how desperate for SF are you?"

As to earlier comments, the Tim Curry episodes are at the beginning, and True is not Uley's sister.

Thanks a lot, Sickdude, that was most helpful. It's on my list behind Buffy S5!

I'm desperate, but after the 30th, I'll be consumed w/multiple goings to Serenity, so I probably won't get to it for some time....

Plus a Cleo 2525! Haven't seen that since Jack of All Trades was goin'!!!!
