Due out this month on the 31st, are ya gonna get it?
Is your name a killing word, or do you hold with the recent Sci-Fi version?

i'm partial to the scifi channel version. i really did like the lynch version though. it was an experience! i love kyle maclachlan. being in twin peaks cemented my devotion.
i liked the scifi channel version because it was closer to the books, and frank herbert is one of my favorite authors. i haven't seen the lynch dune in years, however. i think i'll netflix it.

I own both the original Lynch release and the SciFi channel release on DVD. I found both didn't live up to my hopes as compared to the novel but then few movies do whenever a novel is as rich and imaginative as Dune is. I still liked both as each had their own strong points and good effects but I kinda leaned more to the SciFi version than Lynch's. I recently saw Lynch's unedited version (4hrs) that I assume is the one soon to be released on DVD and I didn't find that much extra that would make me want to spend the money. However if you're a big fan then by all means, I know what that's like, I own all 8 seasons of Stargate SG-1. Enjoy the movie!

I actually prefer his theatrical version, but the extra scenes are interesting to view within the framework of the movie once in a while (or, at least once), and in any case, an anamorphic version is what I've REALLY been waiting for...

Been waiting for this movie... yes, I'm gonna get it. And get one for my daugher as a late b-day gift, too. (Already got her "Serenity")

I also really liked "Children of Dune" from the SciFi channel.
The SciFi version of "Dune" was good too. I liked the actors that played Paul and Leto.

"Dune" the book was my first life changing book.
That sounds silly, but I hope ya'll know what I mean. I've read them all and the movies can't hold a candle to them, but they will do.

sweeeeeet.....oh, yes, I will be getting this! Yeah, the SciFi ones are closer to the books, but when I think "Dune" the Lynch version is the one I see in my head.

SHK, who wants to be a Bene Gesserit...(well, costuming at least! and Lynch, NOT SciFi)

Absolutely will purchase the new DVD version.
BTW--read the series twice. My question is to those of you who have continued on in the reading of the newest Dune books written by someone other than Frank Herbert (I think it's a family member--a Brian Herbert?--forgive me if I'm wrong ). After he passed--I just never gave the new series a go. Can anyone tell me if they are worth the read?! I'd much appreciate a heads up.

They're hit and miss, and do play a little loose with the canon, but given that they're prequels, and there is a large time gap between events, you can kind of forgive some of it as "translational drift" -- that is, an event happens, and through retelling and manipulating the situation for political gain, etc., it changes to a more mythical situation. Actually, that's a bit of the subtext to the books about the Machine Crusade.

I preferred the "House" books -- nice introduction to the families and how they rose to power. The books about the Machine Crusade were so-so. Got very tedious to read in places. The Butlerian Jihad was the best, I read it in 2 days. I struggled for months to finish The Machine Crusade, and the Battle of Corrin was pretty good, as it really had some twists to the formation of the Spacing Guild and the Bene Gesserit that were interesting.

I just got The Road to Dune, which is supposed to be the original Dune short story, but I haven't read it yet.

Thanks Shinyhappyklin--I will try one on for size I'm thinking--after my Neil Gaiman fix. Your comments were very helpful.

I'm surprised Lynch hasn't protested the extended version.

If you look closely at the opening credits it reads, "directed by Alan Smithee" which is the old Hollywood psuedonym a studio uses when a director demands his name be removed from the final cut.

In any case I've never been satisfied with any version of Dune on film, but since it eventually resulted in DeLaurentis handing Lynch a pile of money to make Blue Velvet, I've never really been able to complain.

Yup. I agree.

I will be buying the extended 4-hour DVD to round out my complete Dune experience. Until now I've had only an extremely old grainy VHS of Lynch's 4-hour version. And it had japaneese subtitles. Yuck.

But as to what you say you are right, both Lynch's film and sci-fi's series fall short of the novels. I have, however, observed that plot points that one film would get totally wrong were often done right in the other film and vice-versa. Examples: Lynch completely made up heartplugs and the idea that the Wierding Way was a means of "killing someone with sound" Sci-fi on the other hand played with plot and completely made up the idea that Irulian came to Feyd in a seduction attempt.

Did anyone else cringe at the silly costumes Sci-Fi dressed the characters in? What was up with that akward Triangle-thing on feyd's back? The spacing guild members looked like santa's elves and the Bene Geserit sisters could shelter a dozen people under their funky hats. Sci-fi must have gotten complants about it because in Children of Dune the constumes are toned way down.

In any case, I can only say that it's about time Lynch's extended version made it to DVD. Now if somebody could get Twin Peaks season 2 on DVD.....

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.

Yeah, the costumes in the sci-fi version were just that, COSTUMES.
Suitable for Halloween and 50's B-movies only.

I SO wanted to like it...

Lynch's version just had more weight to it, IMHO.
