The Man They Call Soul...

SPOILERS for anyone who has not seen the most recent U.S. airing of Stargate: Atlantis.

Okay, here I go.

I've always been a fan of the secondary characters on most of the TV shows I watch. They are always my favorite. On Heroes, it's Hiro's pal Ando. On Lost, it's Rose and Bernard.

On SG:A, it was Carson. I've always loved the guy. He was McKay's balance, he was the level head. He was a great character all around.

I just got to watch the latest eppy on my TiVo tonight, and I've got to say, I did get a bit emotional. Yes, I'm a guy, and yes, I teared up just a bit, especially when the bagpipes started playing.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one who will sorely miss Dr. Carson Beckett.

never fear our SAVE CARSON campaign ( including a bag pipe band in front of the Vancouver offices)) worked to a point--he will be back for at least 2 episodes next season--in some form------better than nothing I say

I avoid all spoilers and news for those shows, so I had no idea that was going to happen. The episode seemed to kinda drag on, I thought it was just a filler ep.

Then... AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

Yeah. Bit o'surprise. I love Dr. Beckett, and he was an absolute sweetheart at Dragon*Con.

SINGATE

His departure was definitely a shocker. That whole episode had a weird feel to it, jumping around to differents points in time, showing the same events from different POV. I kind of had the feeling something was going to happen but it didn't hit me until Carson ordered the lockdown. I still wasn't prepared when it actually happened because it looked like that bomb disposal guy had it secure. He will be missed but what a great way for a character to exit a show.

He may not be the only character to leave before season's end.

I've read that Dr. Weir will be departing the show. I've also heard that Carter will move from SG1 to Atlantis. Perhaps she will resign her commission and be placed in command of the city.

Exactly. While I enjoyed Paul McGillion (as Dr. Carson Beckett) and am sorry to see him go, his moving on opened the door for Jewel (as Dr. Jennifer Keller) to step in and do a very good job as "the replacement". I'm looking forward to seeing her next season!

And yes, the word is out that Amanda Tapping (LtCol Samantha Carter) will be a main character on Atlantis while Torri Higginson (Dr. Elizabeth Weir) moves to a guest starring role.

I loved Carson. Loved him. My son's name is Carson (but seriously, I didn't name my son after him!)

He will be missed. I hope he visits Rodney every once in a while a la "Head Carson" just like in BSG.

I, too, will miss him. Teared up even though I'd read a spoiler and knew it was coming sometime this season.

What's up with the doctors always getting killed on the Stargate shows? They killed off Dr. Frasier on SG1, now this.

I really think they could have done a lot more with his character. I suppose, if this changes McKay in some profound way, it'll be worth it. Maybe.

I hope they don't kill off Zelenka!

Yeah, you're right. Caroline Cave has similar facial features to Jewel Staite. After closer examination, here's what I found:

Caroline Cave as Dr. Cole

Jewel Staite as Dr. Keller

I guess the girl in the "Click" cologne commercial looks more like Jewel than Ms. Cave does. But at a glance without immediate reference material (ie. a poster featuring the luscious Jewel Staite) handy, it's not hard to see how I made the mistake.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, as much as I would like to say I didn't know it was coming, I did. I stumbled across a spoiler a few months back that mentioned Carson being killed off and being replaced by a character played by Jewel. I didn't know it was going to happen on this particular episode, but I knew he was a marked man.

Carson's death seemed orchestrated a bit too much to me. Why did he insist on transporting the bomb to the disposal squad? Why not toss it out a window? Why not set it down and evecuate the room? It just didn't sit right with me and still doesn't.

Carson isn't necessarily my favorite character, but I hate seeing weak writing when dealing with a character's death.
