Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

When I was a young adult, I came across a novel in the small library of a condominium where I was working. The novel had a title that was something like, "The Lieutenant" or "The Captain" or some low-middle military rank. It may even have been "The Last Lieutenant" or some such similar title.

It depicted (if I recall) a British platoon (or other small-medium sized unit) in a post-apocalyptic setting, trying to make its way back to Headquarters. I remember that the platoon made use of silk as ballistic protection. I also remember that they had a pneumatic squad gun.

During the course of the book, the titular Lieutenant or Captain or whatever takes over his home country. The book concludes with a visit by American forces (via a sophisticated naval vessel) which culminates in a botched diplomatic encounter and a firefight where the titular character is slain.

I seem to remember that the titular character's military rank was actually retired in his country, in honor of him.

I read this book about 15 years ago, on the midnight shift. Time has dulled my recollections. I remember enjoying it, and would like to revisit it.

Does anyone have any idea what book this could be, or who wrote it?

Thanks,

--Anthony

No luck yet, but from your references the weapon was probably one of two models of what is now known as a Dynamite Gun.

That might help narrow it down a bit.

If you remember what caused the apocalypse this link might help:

Hello,

Thanks guys. The pneumatic in the story was like a machine gun, if I remember. But reading about the dynamite gun was entertaining.

And this vast list of post-apocalyptic fiction was great, and reminded me of my youthful guilty pleasure, the Deathlands series. (The first place I ever heard of a LeMat revolver.)

But... I can't seem to find the book I'm thinking of. Darnit.

Anyhow, I appreciate the help.

Hello,

I remember that the lieutenant (or near-ranked officer) had a bulletproof vest made of parachute silk. I can't recall his name. I do recall it saved him at least once.

I suppose it must be a wonder why I want to find this book if I recall so little about it. It's like going to Disney with someone, not remembering who, but remembering you liked the rides.

I don't remember the cause of the apocalypse, only that there had been a big war that shattered the world. I'm fairly sure the protagonists were British.

That everyone dies at the end, and that the heroes die ultimately because of an American diplomatic mission to push them around, makes it seem like something that would be unpopular here in the states.

Spent more time procrastinating trying to figure out what the hell you're talking about and all I found of note is this hilarious blog on traits you'll need to survive various end-of-the-world scenarios:

This sounds a lot like the movie "The Last Lieutenant" but haven't seen a book about it. This man had a "discontinued rank of second lieutenant" in the Norwegian army.

Oddly enough, I think I might have this book on my bookshelf (somewhere ) and I have the urge to say it's written by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. The blurb from the back of the book seems mighty similiar from what I recall...found it!

The book is "The Final Blackout," published serial style in 1940 for Astounding Science Fiction by Hubbard and was first printed as a full novel in 1948. It's set in an alternative post-WWII future where Europe was decimated by nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and chronicles the rise of the "The Lieutenant" from military officer to dicator of the United Kingdom.

Hello,

That's it! Thank you so much.

Ech. Who'd have thunk who the author would be, eh?

I'll have to get my hands on a copy from the library and re-read it.

Thanks so much!

Hello,

It just occurred to me...

If he first wrote this in 1940, did he then anticipate the Manhattan Project and Nuclear weaponry?

Hello,

Yes, you are right. Still, I'm romantic enough to wish that all the gems in life were found in noble mountains. I won't shun the diamond, though, as it has value independent of its source.
