OK now that that's out of the way, who else has seen Thor? I thought it was a good movie. I've never been a Thor fan. So, I don't know enough about the mythos to know if they changed anything too wildly. I mean I know Loki is a frost giant and all.

I feel like the movie is not one I'll be interested in owning. They spent so much time with Thor being stuck as a mortal that it felt like there wasn't anything too cool to watch again and again. The whole thing seemed about getting him to the mindset to be a hero. That's fun to see once. After that I just want to see him in action. There just wasn't much of that. I actually commented before the movie that I wasn't even sure who the big villain was going to be from the previews. Well that's kinda cause there wasn't much of a big fight.

They did a good job of jumping back and forth between Asgard and Earth. It didn't really feel like you ever got tired of the events in either world. Though I think on rewatching the events on Earth will seem boring.

They also seemed to do a good job balancing the humor. Some good laughs in there but they were mostly shock value type things. I don't think they'll be funny the second time around.

I didn't think that Jane worked as much of a love interest. I mean they act as if Thor fell in love with her. When did that happen exactly? Just during their night talking by the fire? They had like a decent date. He's got a crush at best.

I don't really like where they left the film. I mean leading into Avengers it seems like they'll have to spend some time explaining how Thor gets back to Earth. They're going to have a lot to cover in Avengers. That seems like a kinda pointless thing to waste time on. I'm also not sure if Jane is a part of Avengers, but it won't make much sense for Thor to return to Earth and not immediately go to find Jane.

Anyway what does everyone else think?

I really enjoyed it. It was a good movie and one that I will probably own at some point. I too knew very very little about the comic Thor but knew some things about the original myths.
I didn't know Loki was a Frost Giant but guessed straight away as he had dark hair and through my previous knowledge of the character.

I don't agree that they spent too much time with him as a mortal. As you say that was kind of the point, that he had to learn what it meant to be a king, it wasn't just strength that made a good king. He had to be stripped of everything and ultimately sacrifice himself to become humbler and more worthy. The film was basically setting him up for future appearances. A lot of hero films do this. But I do agree that there wasn't much of a fight. What was there was fine but there wasn't much of it.

Yeah, the 'love story' was a bit weak, although Natalie Portman was fine in a character that could have been one noted. I would say that Jane was infatuated more with him than being in love. She wanted to know more about him and where he came from and this pulled her in. I do have to agree that Thor acted like he was in love with her but put it down to the Hollywood thing. They only had a very short time for the characters to know each other so it was rushed, especially from Thor's POV.

I thought the ending was fine, half-closed, half-open. It seemed to make it fairly obvious that the humans would create this bridge and find a way to Asgard. If it features in The Avengers then I imagine we'll just see a short clip of Agent 'Son Of Coul' Coulson calling for Thor once the bridge is open. We probably won't even see Asgard and then he'll just appear back on Earth. I hope Joss and the others will assume that fans have seen the other related films and can figure out the rest. If fans haven't then it's their loss. Just my opinion.

A good film that, if I'm honest, I wasn't too fussed about watching. I'm glad I did.

It was a pretty good, probably not enough that I'll buy it, but still good. I was confused at the part after the credits though. Am I supposed to know what the thing inside the case was? Anyone know what that was?

I saw it last weekend. It's not bad really. I think it was a clever idea by the crew to not take itself too seriously and to poke fun at the 'Lore' surrounding the character.
I love the Norse myths and they're great fun, but very difficult to not fall about laughing at some of the primitive notions. So I think they did a great job of balancing the ancient folklore with the present day dialouge - because it is a little cheesy; all that posturing and yelling about tree of life, Frost giants, Valhalla and stuff can seem pretty daft. But they did a good job.

My one fault with it was the costume design. Some of the helmets looked too plastic and polished. It looked like they were designed with the idea of marketing them as toys. Which was a shame as I think it'll date pretty quickly.

Hemsworth though is a star. He made a great impression in Star Trek and he seems to genuinely possess a 'persona' up there on screen.

This years Sam Worthington...?

EvilDinosaur - I think the cube thing is meant as a vehicle conduit for other/alien superhero characters to reach earth - I believe to be cleard up with Captain America and then Joss' Avengers. But I heard that from a comic book friend. I have no idea how accurate that is to the idea from the films creators.

Did you guys watch it in 3D? Was it anygood in that format?

Agree. I like the lighthearted approach as well. Seeing Thor prance around on Earth acting all big and strong only to get knocked down seconds later was funny. Plus (as I mentioned above) I liked that he called Agent Coulson 'Son of Coul', using the older meaning of his name.
If they had taken it all seriously then I think it would have been laughable for the wrong reasons.

I saw Sam back when he did Sommersault and thought he was good but he just seems to have gone the big budget, CGI, action route - which is a pity.
Chris definitely has potential and I hope he chooses more wisely and shows off his acting skills. Looking forward to seeing more of him.

I too assumed the power source was referencing something in the comic world but also took it the same way you did that, combined with the bridge technology, it would allow Thor (and others) to come and go from Earth. As I didn't know any more than that for definite it was enough to keep me from thinking more on it.

2D for me.
Tron Legacy has put me off 3D for a bit because it was so poorly done.

Yeah - retro 3D is unsatisfactory. I don't think it should be shown as regular 3D. I only learnt after the fact (that being after I'd already bought my ticket) that Tron Legacy was filmed in 2d and then in post production fitted with 3D. That isn't right. Had I known I wouldn't have gone the 3D route.

I love 3d. I'm a big fan and I think the one person from my group of chums who doesn't incur a headache from watching it, and I want to see it continue; particularly with this intended 48 frames per second that Peter Jackson is pushing for the Hobbit (though I don't want to see the hobbit). However if studios continue to push this sub standard retro 3D format it will surely turn audiences away, because the spectacle does not justify the higher price.

With The Avengers line-up pretty much already locked, one question still remains ... who will be the villain? While there have been rumors of the filming having more than one villain, it's previously been announced that Tom Hiddleston's Loki will be one of them. But as you will see at the end of Thor, Loki may not look exactly like Tom Hiddleston in The Avengers.

In classic Marvel tradition there is a final scene after the credits that features Sam Jackson's Nick Fury speaking with Stellan Skarsgard's Dr. Erik Selvig about the Cosmic Cube, a recently discovered item with untold power. It is then revealed that, after the conclusion of the film, Loki was transported to Earth and is now possessing Dr. Selvig. This makes you wonder just how much of Loki's role in The Avengers will be played by Tom Hiddleston and how much will be played by Stellan Skarsgard?

I had a chance to sit down and speak with Tom Hiddleston today while he was out doing press for Thor. I took the opportunity to grill the actor about his role in The Avengers, if he will be sharing it with Stellan Skarsgard, the film's other villains, the script, a little about the plot, the team's official line-up, and exactly when he begins shooting his scenes. Here is what the talented actor had to say:

To begin with, the end credit scene in Thor acts as a teaser to The Avengers, and we can see from that scene that you are now possessing Dr. Selvig. So are you physically going to be playing Loki in The Avengers or will you be sharing the role in a sense with Stellan Skargard?

Thanks for The Avengers insight. Can't wait for that film, although I have to say that the preview for Captain America looks pretty stupid.

One thing I don't understand is how they can make The Avengers without Natalie Portman. Don't you think if Thor returns to Earth the first thing he'd do is look up Jane Foster, and I'm assuming that in The Avengers the portal or wormhole or rainbow road (heh-heh) will be opened back up, allowing both Thor and other villains into the mix. As for the question posed about who the villain or villains will be, I'm not overly familiar with The Avengers. Is there a counter Avengers group like the Legion of Doom was to the Super Friends?

As for Thor itself, I really enjoyed it. Definitely broke away from the super hero movie formula. I hope Kenneth Brannah directs the sequels. Also, I think Thor could have spent a little more time as a mortal learning to not be quite so headstrong, but I understand the time constraints.

I got roped into seeing it in 3D, even though I told the person buying the tickets several times the week before that the 3D was one of those crappy conversion jobs: "Oh, well, I just thought it'd be neat to see the hammer thrown about in 3D." Sheesh!

America loves a winner!

Just saw it, and I really liked it. The imagery was very impressive. I hear that a lot in movies, and so often it doesn't impress me. Avatar comes to mind.

As for where the movie left off, Loki said there were secret ways to get in an out of Asgard, so I'm guessing it's only a matter of time until one if found, and one leading to Earth. Found by Thor, I mean.

Also, I did watch it in 3D. Not bad, but it made the screen all the more darker ( imo ) and much of the color seemed a bit washed out. I'd like to see it again, but in 2D next time.

And as for the part about Loki at the post credit scene... I got the impression that he was just 'looking in' on what Nick Fury and the Dr were talking about, and hadn't fully possessed him. But I guess that could left up for interpretation ?

Anyways, a decent flick. I recommend it.

My thoughts are that they don't need to show her. They may mention the character in relation to the bridging technology but Thor told Agent Coulson to call on him when needed. Once the bridge is reopened Coulson can do that and bring Thor back. But he'd only do it if it's needed, i.e. the world is in danger. Thor is a warrior and hero who would put the fate of the Earth first over hooking up with Jane. He wouldn't risk Earth just for a date. After the movie is over he'd go looking for her which, of course, would lead into Thor 2.

Well, that's kinda my point. He didn't so much take over and possess the Dr, as he sort of implanted the thought into his head. Loki basically Jedi mind tricked him, as it were. Least, that's the way I saw it. Tiny detail, I suppose.
