When anyone is learning how to stake, it has to be perfect, but the rest of the time, it seems like anywhere in the upper torso area will do.

I just rewatched Homecoming. I have to say the spatula staking of Candy Gorch has to be the worst ever. It's in her bellybutton! And in the Buffyverse, doesn't it have to be wood?

yea, that's one of the areas buffy kinda lacked in was making sure the character actually hit the heart.

The spatula did have a wooden handle tho, so that part wasn't a mistake.

Pretty sure it has to be wood since I have seen Angel take a sword to the heart, Think Spike got staked with something metal once to, dont remember if it was in the heart though.

yeah, Riley staked Spike right in the heart w/a plastic stake once just to freak him out...
it hurt but didn't do any lasting damage
(poor angel has had swords stuck in him more times than I can count)

Oh yeah, rememeber when the LA woman cop managed to dust the bad vampire, but NOT dust Angel when she thrust a wooden pole through both of them, but angling it so it didn't go through Angel's heart?!

So yeah, you do have to stake through the heart w/wood...but just like Nick Brendon in the first episode of the first season, sometimes they screw up and you are supposed to not notice.....

WHISPER

The one that always bugs me is in "Chosen" when Anya is battling the uber-vamps with a sword. She slashes it in the legs/waist and it dusts. Bothers me everytime.

Hmm, I actually heard on a radio quiz about vampires (I think it was to win Buffy on dvd) that if you stab someone in the chest, the chances of it hitting the heart are actually remarkably high.
Don't know how true this is, but I thought it was interesting (he did give a percentage, but I dont want to take a guess without sounding like a right idiot)

As for the Angel episode where Kate stakes the vampire behind by stabbing Angel through his stomach - I gotta say that it was bit stupid, considering Angel could have died too - but the scene was really cool and Kate didn't like Angel anyway at that point, so I'll forgive her

As for Whisper's comment about Anya dusting the ubervamps by slashing them in the leg/waist... well I can't remember it exactly, but if they were completely seperated from the rest of the body, would that maybe get the same reaction as a beheading - which of course dusts vamps. Maybe not, but its a theory
