No, I never noticed her at all.

And another strange thing happened. I was watching an episode of Buffy where Spike is really pissed off about something to the point where he goes and gets a shotgun, storms over to Buffy's house with the intent to blow her away. When he gets there, Buffy's on the front porch crying silently and looking really miserable. Spike walks towards her with the shotgun pointed right at her. His face is one of anger, and revenge. Buffy looks up and says "What do you want now?" The look on Spikes face was priceless. The anger that was there melts away, and he actually starts to look concerned....am I missing something here...Spike, concerned??? He then asks her if there's anything he can do! Am I missing something here? Then he puts the gun down, sits next to her on the porch, pats her on the back and then they both just sat there silently.

Buffy is in pain and fear because she thinks her mother is going to die, but Spike, well, Spike looks like he LOVES Buffy!!! Am I right in saying this? His actions were the actions of someone who loves another.

I never liked Spike until this episode. He always seemed like some punk, band member who went on tour one day and never came back. What is with Buffy that even her enemies become concerned and protective of her????

You seem to be watching the episodes out of order. If you watch Season 5 from the beginning, the whole thing with Dawn AND Spike gets explained.

Spoilers follow:

Select to view spoiler:

No. Dawn didn't exist before Season 5, you didn't miss anything there. It's all very weird and mystical, involving a crazy God, some monks, some knights and a key.

Several episodes before the one you mentioned (ie. 'Fool For Love' (Big clue in the Ep. title right there - also my favourite Buffy episode of all time because it explains how Spike became who he is and he's the only reason I watched the show at all)) there's one called 'Out of my Mind'. That's when Spike realized that, yes, he's in love with Buffy. It all goes downhill for him after that, he's never the same evil vamp again.

River, do you remember the first scene from This Years Girl(season 4)? Faith is having a coma dream about her and Buffy preparing a room for "little sis." When I first saw that I thought it meant a new slayer, but it was Dawn. There are other foreshadowy moments that I have found, in retrospect.
Don't worry. All will be revealed.

I seriously don't want to ruin the fun, it just seemed like there were a few blanks that needed to be filled in. I feel perfectly justified in giving spoilers if River's not watching the episodes in the proper order and missing out on important stuff.

Also, my spoilers aren't really all that spoilery. I did that on purpose. Besides, it's not as if any of it isn't already common knowledge. Buffy finished years ago.

And what is this 'key' that Dawn is supposed to be? What is her function? I'm watching the episode where Buffy's mother died, and everyone is acting weird. Thank GOD I no longer care enough about anyone so when they die I get all weird and weepy. Those days are gone from me and thank goodness.

I remember when I found my mother dead, i didnt act like Buffy at all, with panic, loss and fear. I was glad, but not glad in the joyful fashion. I was glad in the way that one experinces when a toothach goes away. I guess my mother had laid there all night dead and the blood had pooled to the center of her body. She was face down. I looked an touched with curiousity. It was weird but I called the ambulance and then went back to watching the Original BSG since it was airing that day. I guess my older brother and sisters freaked out a little, but that was not my problem. I never loved my mother. She gave me no reason too.

Buffy's relationship with her mother, that watcher and her friends is an alien concept for me. I cannot even begin to understand how people form relationships like that. My relationships with people were always strange. Never like what I see on Buffy. No group could ever be that tight, so I must chock it up to being a fantasy made-for-tv sort of thing.

Out of all my friends and relatives that died from natural causes or suicide, I only got upset once about a death, and that death was a guy friend I knew and talked with from time to time. His name was Bruce and he died in 2004. I think I shed a tear or two for him, and then nothing. I must be like a machine or something. Oh well, next DVD.

Jesus can take a back seat. Humanity is a germ that needs to be knocked down especially men. Humanity is meat to be wasted. Humans are nothing but a stain on the floor of life. Life means nothing, so any attempt by me to connect with humanity is an empty one. I know who and what i am now.

More than one I'd say.

I guess I'm lucky. I've always had a close group of friends that spend time with me and are like family to me. It's just something that's always been a big part of my life, and it's also why I come on here - to meet new people, make new friends, find out about other people's opinions and share thoughts, memories, laugh and talk about things.

You're here River, and you have a place in this family - and despite what you may think, we're glad you're here.

I for one am enjoying reading your thoughts and reactions to Buffy season 5 - I know how I felt at first, and the confusion I felt when Dawn turned up! As for the Spike thing....I'm saying nothing at all, but I shall be keeping an eye out for your reactions to the rest of the season!

One question - do you like Glory? I know a lot of people had quibbles about her. Personally I thought she was a good villain, though you still have a few surprises to come regarding her if memory serves (and I won't give anything away here).

Um, Buffy just sacrificed herself for her sister and the world. The show ended up with everyone crying and a picture of Buffy's headstone at a Grave Yard.

Well as far as I'm concerned, Buffy Summers is dead. She died a heroic death for the sister she swore to protect, and of course, the world also got the benefit of being saved just for being there.

I sort of gathered that she had to give up her life anyway somewhere along the line when she had a conversation with that 1st Slayer out in the desert. "Your Gift is death" That screamed sacrifice. I just had to figure out when and where.

I'm going to put the brakes on seasons 6 and 7 because by bringing Buffy back to life is a script, direction change that I would compare with what they did with the new Battlestar Galactica. By having everyone colonize New Caprica, and then having the Cylons show up, and its one year later, with Baltar as the new President. It throws the story in a whole new direction.

The Buffy that jumped off that tower to save her sister will always be the real Buffy Summers to me. It would have been perfect if they had ended the series at season 5 I might come back to this some day, but I don't want my image of the 1st 5 seasons of Buffy wrecked.

Angel died and went to hell or whatever and look what happened to him when he came back....he was insane for a while. I don't want to see Buffy insane. And even if she came back, there is no way that she could be the same person.

Also, the way Spike was snivalling when Buffy died, its clear to me that at some point in the next 2 season's, he's going to get a soul like Angel. And Willow, I bet you anything Willow is going to be a problem down the road. You don't go from nerd girl to super witch without a little being drunk with power showing up in the mix. This is so predictable at this point regarding show directions. They should have ended this thing at season 5.

Fine. Give up now that Buffy's dead. That's what I did, I needed some space. I was afraid that 6 and 7 would ruin it for me.

And then I wanted more Buffy.
And to my surprise, six made her all the more understandable and 'human'. And seven is one of my favourite seasons...but Grounded would say I'm a little twisted for that opinion....and I am, I'll admit...

I've actually heard that said.
But like Embers, I say NO!
If it had ended there, I would not own all the seasons, and it would be in my memory as still a poor second to Dark Angel.
Seasons 6 and 7 are what brings it up to being Dark Angel's equal, IMHO.
(I think Embers would place it above DA, but that's another thread...)

oh I disagree...
I might say that 'Hush' tied w/'Smile time'
but OMWF stands proud and tall as the greatest achievement of Joss' life...
the lyrics, music, story, everything was so perfectly done.
When you consider that every single song moves the plot forward.
That every aspect of the story relates to things that have happened before and will happen in the future.
And particularly when you consider that each song had to be tailor made to fit the voice and range of each of his actors....
it is an incredible thing.
In fact I think I should put it in my DVD player and watch it again right this minute! LOL

I want to watch Buffy grow into the cool person she ended up being in season 5. She starts off by being a kid who fights Vampires and Demons in the 1st season, and ends up becoming the super heroin of legends in the 5th season.

There's a big difference between the characters of Buffy from season 1 and season 5. Willow went from being this shy, timid, geeky person to this confident witch in a lesbian relationship. Xander went from being this geeky guy to an older, funny, geeky guy with courage. Giles went from being a corky librarian, to a strong, knowledgeable, father figure. I really like Giles BTW. I wish he had been my father. I would have learned a lot from him, and he would have been a great guider.

Tara reminded me of the many women I used to know in college. Her character I really didn’t like. She’s too timid. Joyce I liked a lot. I wish I had, had a mother just like her. She gave her daughter a lot of freedom, and she was loving and supportive. I would have been proud to call her Mom.

Spike. I didn’t like for a long time but later on I started to warm up to him, and even started to feel sorry for him. Every time Buffy showed up she hit him in the face and said something mean to him. She didn’t have to do that all the time, but she did. That one episode when he was trying to make a connection with Buffy, and she said that he was beneath her…I really felt sorry for him especially when he started to cry after she left. I also liked when he got pissed off and went and got his shotgun, went over to Buffy’s home with anger and vengeance in his heart, and when he got there, Buffy was sitting on her front porch crying to herself because of the news that her mother was sick and going to the hospital for a few days. He walks over, points the gun at her, and sees that she looks miserable. She asks him what does he want now in a way that suggested that she really didn’t care one way or another. His anger dissipated and he asks here what’s wrong and she says that she didn’t want to talk about it. Spike lowers the shotgun, sits next to her on the porch, pats her on the shoulder cautiously, and then sits there with her silently. This scene really touched me for some reason. Spike was capable of caring.

The whole Spike/Buffybot episode was funny…at least the part where Spike was mock fighting with the bot. “Make your move Slayer!” Spike says as he and the Buffybot maneuvered around each other. Spike’s character was really starting to grow, but I was put-off by how the Scooby gang treated him especially Xander. Xander’s behavior towards Spike really started to get on my nerves. It was clear that Spike was trying to make amendments through action helping them in their little adventures, but they wasn’t giving him a chance at all. Towards the end I really liked and respected Spike. He put up with torture, and didn’t tell Glory anything about the Key, and got his ass beat up on in the process. He did it because he really respected and loved the Slayer.

Buffy in season one seemed so young to be doing what she did. I’ve never met any teenagers in my time that could take on such responsibility, while maintaining a girly-girl outlook on life. In real life this would not be possible, but in the show, Buffy pulls it off well. We got to watch Buffy go from one adventure to another, and she grows each time. Buffy isn’t a hardcore hero. She has a heart and she can be hurt emotionally by people she knows, which makes her very different from other superheroes; she’s real, and very much human. But also she’s a girl-stuff girl. Fancy clothes, fancy shoes, the latest in hairstyles, and in tune with the latest scene, which makes her normal life a perfect secret identity to hide who she really is; A Slayer.

Towards the end of season 5, Buffy’s character moves from the vague area of Slayer to Hero. Buffy is a 1st class hero. I have more to say, but I have things to and people to see.

At one time, I actually had SMG singing "Going through the Motions" as my cell phone ringer. I was very very obsessed with that show.

The soundtrack isn't as good as the episode. "Going Through the Motions" just isn't as fun without the sound of a body hitting the ground.

As for Xander being an asshole to Spike. . . Well, Xander's always had problems with the men in Buffy's life. Remember his feud with Angel?

Xander's had a crush on Buffy since the beginning, and he's a little territorial. Possible he senses the sparkage between Spike and Buffy, and is letting that colour his understandable dislike of the unpredictable and untrustworthy psycho killer.

But River! No one is ever dead in a Joss Whedon epic. Besides, yes she died a heroic selfless death - but it was also not a "natural" death and therefore doesn't count.

As a Buffy fan from the beginning, I have to say that I thought the whole "Dawn the Key" was about the point that this show "jumped the shark". I hated this season and everything about it. As a matter of fact, I pretty much stopped watching because of everything that happens. With the exception of the Buffy/Spike thing, I could have missed it and not cared. IMHO Spike is WAY too good for Buffy. Towards the end of the serious I was kind of sick of her. (I didn't much like the way she treated Riley either.) I was happy that she was brought back and that the show got a bit more on track. I was able to get back into watching it again.
