You know the one, 1992's Buffy The Vampire Slayer with Kristy Swanson(as Buffy). It was such a JOKE! Nowhere NEAR the talents of Joss Whedon! I can't believe how much The Powers That Be screwed it up! They should have stuck with Joss's original idea, it would have made a MUCH better movie, let alone a trailer FOR the movie! I'm so glad that I watched BTVS the Series BEFORE I saw the movie trailer because I would have never gotten into The Series had I seen the movie first(I've never actually seen the movie)! I have no idea why I'm posting this but,"Well, here I am."

Best way I can describe it is that you were meant to laugh AT the original Kristy Swanson movie. Pee Wee's big death scene? Hi-larious! The campiness, the ridicul-osity, the characters were performing for laughs. Of course, that really removes any empathy you have for Buffy or the other characters.

I liked the movie for those very reasons. It's good for a laugh.

Actually, if you watch it, you can see that there are many "whedonisms" in it. The actors just weren't pulling them off well at all.

Also, the problem with someone writing a movie and another directing it, is that never does what happens in the writers mind end up on the screen. It is irrational to even suggest that this is possible.

First off, the director is not psychic. Secondly, the director will do his/her own vision of what (s)he thinks should be done, not someone else's. This is one of the "crazy" defining qualities of a director.

For that matter, how do you know that "they" even knew Joss's original idea? After all, he just wrote the thing. How often does the person who sells a screen play stick around to talk to the studio to tell them about what they should do with it?

I mean seriously. This is the early 90's. A time in which if someone mentioned Joss's name, people would say something along the lines of, who the is Joss Whedon?

Finally, if you want to have an opinion on a movie and have that opinion carry weight, you're going to have to actually see the movie.

Poor Joss was in his early 20s...
and had no power
the director wanted to make a 'campy' style comedy and Joss hates campy.
But what REALLY has always upset JW was that Donald Sutherland never bothered to learn any of his lines, he ad-libbed his way throughout (the very reason Joss has always been death on actors who try to adlib!)...
unfortunately he was supposed to present the exposition!
without the exposition the movie made no sense,
and became the joke that it was.

I disagree: I think Joss Whedon would thank you for skipping the movie and only judging Buffy (and his writing) on the TV series.

The point is conceded, I guess I should watch the movie now, It's just that, after watching the series, and having an image of what Joss wanted Buffy to be, then seeing the trailer and having that image turned into a horror/comedy, Buffy The Vampire Slayer the movie doesn't seem like something I'd be interested in.

Jossis,

watch it. It was very campy. I loved it. Watch it as it's own entity and not as part of BTVS series.

I agree with FMF, you have to watch it on it's own merit. The Paul Ruebens death scene alone is worth it. I was surprised to see so many, then, up and coming stars. David Arquette, Ben Afleck, Hilary Swank, Ricki Lake, Thomas Jane. Yeah, I watched it the other week on late night.

Good for you. I own it, and I love it. My mom has always been a fan of campy horror movies, fantasy, and cheesy teen movies. Hence, I have been Buffy fan since the movie came out when I was six. And thank god, because I probably would never have seen the series otherwise (and without buffy, what are the chances I would have seen Firefly?)

Plus, like everyon'e said, the death of Paul Reubens was also, as were all the hi-larious 90s dresses during the prom scene, and Hilary Swank.

I finally saw Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Movie, I still think I would not have gotten into the series if I had seen the movie first. Having seen Buffy The Series, I am assuming that Joss's original idea was to have Buffy be a mixture of all different aspects of teenage life, to me The Movie was just there to have people laugh at it, not to actually care for the characters like people do with the series, even if people have more time to get to know the characters of the series. As for how I know "They" knew Joss's idea for the movie, in the series it seems to me that Joss cared enough for the characters he created, so he stuck around to explain his ideas to the directors of the episodes, I have no reason to believe that he DIDN'T do the same for his screenplay. Well, there you have it, my explaination for my original post.

Joss was around on the movie set, but he eventually walked off due to frustration caused by what the director, studio, and specifically Donald Sutherland were doing to his story. Even in contemporary interviews, he stills seems pretty traumatized by those events. And it does explain his insistance on actors sticking to every little tiny comma or semicolon in his scripts.

IIRC, he once did a Buffy comic called The Beginning, intended to be the "realBuffy" version of events. Been trying to track down a copy.
