Personally,

giving Xander the double whammy of losing both an eye AND a girl was kinda harsh,

And I changed my mind about Riley, I think after Angel wins his humanity back, Buffy will end up with him.

Spoilers in this post!

3 - Gotta love The Mayor. And the story this season was carried well throughout. Plus - Faith!

5 - I loved Glory. And I absolutely adore Dawn. I know, I know ... I'm a crazy person who deserves to the punished. You may commence flamage ... now!

4 - Setting myself up for more roasting. But this season had Hush! And Doomed! And Restless! And loads of funny! Plus it introduced one of my favourite Buffy characters - Tara. Gotta love Tara!

2 - The first half is ropey but the second half is sooo good it's unbelievable. This finale broke my heart. Even more than the season 5 finale.

7 - I really expected this to be higher since I enjoyed the season, but I'm not really a Spuffy fan, and my favourite characters (Dawn, Xander, Willow and Tara) didn't feature much (or at all!) I did love the finale though. It really completed the Buffy saga for me.

6 - Again I expected this to be higher on my list as I did enjoy the season at the time, but it was very much a Spuffy season and that wasn't a ship I sailed. It did have OMWF though

1 - Personally, I really like this season. Even if it's a bit ropey compared to the others. It set the characters up brilliantly and the finale was a total shocker for me at the time. I have very fond memories of watching this season, and every time I see an episode it makes me smile.

2. 7
3. 2
4. 4 & 6
5. 1

I loved one, but is has to go last, just because the show hadn't found itself yet.

Six is a tenative placement, since for some reason it didn't stick with me as much as the others. I need to watch it again... eventually.

As much as I love some season four episodes ("Hush"), season four just wasn't my favorite. Riley was nice and all, and I loved Anya and Spike in this season, but Walsh just didn't do it for me, and I was SO happy to see the comandos go.

Want a list? I'm pretty sure I've done this before, but I'll hit it again:

- In all the other seasons, the characters came first, the seasonal arc came second. In S7, the characters took a back seat to the arc, which might have been okay if the storyline was really good... but it wasn't. It was all over the map, severely lacking in direction and focus (witness the four episodes spent devoted almost exclusively to Spike's trigger, the eventual deactivation of which didn't even seem to be a speedbump in the First's scheme). In previous years the plots involving Angelus/Dru/Spike, the Mayor, Glory, etc., weren't necessarily any better, but they played a relatively small part in the grand scheme of the season while the main focus stayed on the core characters. In S7, it was all about the First. Way too much.

- The Potentials. Not a bad concept, but there were too many of them, which led to them being pretty much just anonymous faces in the background--even the "main" ones with regular speaking roles like Vi and Amanda never really had any depth to them. Kennedy was annoying, and Rona was just a total bitca. Chao-Ahn was probably the best of the group. Overall, they just sucked up screen time from the characters we really wanted to see.

- Buffy's speeches. There's one episode ("Potential", I think) where nearly every line out of her mouth is part of a speech. Geez, give it a rest, girl.

- Willow, Anya, and especially Xander being relegated to not much more than background characters. It didn't become "The Buffy and Spike Show" as some critics charge, but it did seem that way, if only because they were the only two who got any kind of meaningful characters arcs that year.

- Episodes 19-21. The quotes from the cast and crew that came out as the show was wrapping up promised a 'thrilling' 5-episode arc to wrap things up. Caleb and Faith show up in 18, and it looks like that's going to be true, 'cause that was (and is) a great ep. Then... we get three episodes where the cast is basically just marking time until Joss can ride in on a white horse to wrap everything up in the finale. I'm still waiting to hear why he couldn't have done a two-parter, writing and directing both himself, the way he did in S2 ("Becoming") and 3 ("Graduation Day")...

- Oh, and one more: once he showed up in town, why couldn't Caleb just march over to Buffy's house and wipe 'em all out? Any flobotanous reason the writers could've given would've satisfied, but they didn't even bother...

There are plenty of good things in there, too, however, and I own the season on DVD and still watch it, so it's not like I hate it. It's just not up to the standards they'd set for themselves in seasons 2 thru 6, IMO...

Fair enough to say, G. All true.
I guess Spike all souled and Buffy all made fun of (speechwise, during the video-taping), and the whole finale are what put it up there for me .

Em, Since I started this thread, I've come to feel that each and every season is great in it's own way (save for parts of 1, while it was still finding it's voice..).

There honestly isn't a season I would ever avoid, or watch less often than the others due to preference. I can only say that the last five eps of 7 might become my most watches shows for when I need a quick 'booster shot' without the time to go through all seven seasons chronologically every time.

well, Chris, I wish you could teach me to appreciate Glorificus (who I find to be almost Fran 'The Nanny' Drescher level annoying)...
but other than that I have to agree: ALL the seasons are amazing.
I've been rewatching Buffy's first season with a friend who has never seen any of it, and 'I Robot, You Jane' had always seemed dumb to me...but we had so much fun watching it! And after that came 'The Puppet Show' which was wonderful...
So season 1 may not have the style and depth of the latter seasons, but it is really very good fun!

I'm changing my rating to:
1. seasons 4,2,3,7
2. season 6
3. season 1
4. season 5

JMPO

(we're also watching 'Firefly' and last night w/Jaynestown she has finally seen why I love 'Firefly' even more than 'Buffy')

Entirely pointy.

1. Season Two--The week between pt. 1 and pt. 2 Becoming was pure painful anticipation. After the finale, I was completely floored. I would never again be a casual veiwer.
2. Season Three--Probably, overall, the best season, but lacking the impact of season two. We've got Faith, the Mayor, and two episodes with Vampire Willow.
3. Season Five--This was when Buffy became my hero.
4. Season Seven--I will stipulate that this season is a little lost at times. But, at the time I was so invested in the charactors and story that I devoured every episode. Every Tuesday, I would tape Buffy and Angel while I was at work. When I got home, I would watch Buffy. Rewind it. Watch it again. Then, watch Angel. I agree it should have had a two part finale.
5. Season Six--This is the darkest chapter in the Buffy story, and it happened to air during one of the worst years of my life. Much of it is painful to watch, but some of the best moments from the show are in this season.
6. Season Four--This season has some great episodes, but the overall arc is weak, and it didn't live up to my expectactions after Two and Three.
7. Season One--I missed this season when it originally aired. Prophecy Girl is very good.

"Save me a seat."

Yep, yep, yep. I just finished the third disc last night. While I'm not floored by Brisco, it is charming. The future references are a hoot. The horse stuff is a little distracting for me, though. I am keeping tabs on how many times specific horses appear and how many times Comet is played by another horse. But, those are only things that bother horsepeople like myself.

Season 7 of Buffy: While there are some stand out moments/episodes, as a whole the season felt very weak, and a little annoying, to me. The First was lame villian, all the potentials bothered me, didn't like Kennedy/Willow. Joss was working on Firefly during this season and it shows. BtVS was left in other hands that weren't as competent, though ME would tell us differently. So, season 7 is my least favorite.

I'm spacing Brisco out, only on ep 2, gonna make it l a s t!

I'm watching S7 again right now (only my 2nd time), and I'm liking it at a S3 level!! I LOVE what they did w/Spike! And it has a VERY serious tone that builds...
We must agree to disagree, as it's up there with the best for me!

Okee dokey here we go

3 - The Mayor, Faith, Willow+Oz. Nuff said.
2 - Good guy as a bad guy. Very emotional ending.
7 - Brilliant resolution, and our Nathan. Loved Normal Again.
1 - Struggles at times but sets the scene well for later.
6 - Dark and throws you off kilter. Great
4 - Aside from the Initiative this has some great episodes.
5 - Not a big fan of Glory and Dawn was a bit whiny in this. Still some good stuff.

In order but the last three seasons are difficult to chose between.

#1 - S3 hands down!!! And that is saying a lot considering I'm a Spike Girl. However, my other favorite is Faith, the Mayor is the greatest villian ever, The Wish, Lover's Walk, Doppengangland, Helpless, Buffy stabs Faith, Angel feeds on Buffy....and of course Oz. Need I go on?

#2 - 2 & 4. If you could take the second half of S2 and combine it with the 1st half of S4, it would be perfect! With the exception of Spike and "The Dark Ages", S2 before Angelus isn't much. But omigod does Joss make up for it. And I still say that Passion is hands down the greatest episode ever!

When S4 came out, I jumped on the band wagon of hating it. I thought it was stilted. Then I understood that was the point, and I ended up loving it. Until, of course, the appearance of Adam. Ugh! But it really does have some amazing moments, and honestly I sobbed harder when Will and Oz broke up (the final time) then possibly any other moment in the show.

#3: S6 - This is not a popular choice. I rewatched it lately. And I admit I was a little taken aback with all the sex, how raw it was. But it was also brilliant. And not just because JM was naked 24/7. People grow up, they flirt with danger. When they have a trauma and become numb, they'll do anything to feel. Buffy is the Slayer, and she DIED. For her to flirt with danger and feel she would have to start a violent affair with Spike. And the Geeks were fantastic. First for being so hilarious, and then for being so terrifyingly real. And of course dark Willow is the sexiest most amazing villian ever. And Tony coming through the door is perhaps the happiest moment ever.

#4 - S7: I was not a huge fan of the potentials, but everything else is great. Anya and Spike got to stretch a bit. And of course every episode from the return of faith/arrival of caleb is fantastic.

#5: S5- Another really hard call. Some of the most beautiful, poignant episodes are here. But Glory and Dawn really annoy me!

#6 - S1: It was fantastic the first time. And I still love The Pack and Nightmares. But you can't rewatch it like the other ones. They shot them all on the original budget and it shows. And it boasts at least 3 of the worst episodes of the series, and there are only 12 total in the season!

occasionally i am callous and strange.
