I have seen the best or favorite episode/scene a million times. Almost literally. I've been on and off the boards since '99. Sometimes the answers amaze me. But what I've noticed that there are some episodes that never make any list, as if forgotten or overlooked.

So, your assignment is to think about the answers you've given and lists you've seen and then about the eps that never get their due.

My inspiration for this question is "Helpless." Such a great episode. So dark, so creepy. And so awesome, because Buffy kicks ass with no strengh! And no one EVER talks about it!

Yeah, 'Helpless' came to my mind too.
Also, 'Who Are You', the one where Buffy and Faith switch bodies. They both do such a good acting job that I can almost believe Eliza is in Sarah's body and vice versa...

Killed By Death, season 2. It was one of the better eps that never gets mentioned, and so amazing that they worked the demon in as the killer of Buffy's cousin(?). Smiling bad guy seems to be the template for the Gentlemen in Hush, same level of creepafy-e-ness.

How about 'Intervention' in season 5?
I don't think I've seen that mentioned a lot, and it's one of my favourites. The banter with Buffybot and the others, "How is your money?", the spooky scene with Buffy and the First Slayer, Spike standing up to Glory and we get a little foreshadowing of the Buffy/Spike relationship.

I've always loved "Same Time, Same Place" from season 7. Great comedy, great dialogue, and the Monster-of-the-Week was creepy and gross. Loved Gnarl. One of the funniest lines when Spike was leading the others to the cave ("yes, let's tie ourselves to the crazy vampire")......when they finally arrive Spike growls to Xander "OK, end of the line, everyone off......."Keep your ticket, you'll need it!!!"....the look on Xander's face is high-larious!!!

I really love Him and Tough Love which never seem to make any lists. Even if the idea was pretty unorignal, Him has got to be one of the funniest eps. I mean come on, Anya as a bank robber!
I love Tough Love because of Willow's attack on Glory which I have to say is one of the coolest moments in the history of television ('wrong. bag of knifes' *tingles*). I've watched that part a ridiculous amount of times.
Oh, I also love Family which rarely gets a mention. I'm such a big Willow/Tara shipper and the floaty dancing at the end is just magical!

I think 'Anne' is highly underrated. It gets a lot of flak, but I think it's really well done, and the ending is very touching.

a) I've been gone for 2 months and you're still at the top of the list!

b) Killed by Death! That's on my worst list. With the exception of the Angelus/Xander stand off, which is one of the greatest moments ever.

Occasionally I am callous and strange.

I'm glad to see "Killed by Death", "Anne", and "Same time, same place" mentioned, especially the latter since it is in my top five. That episode makes me cry every time. Oh, Willow...

I just watched "Blood Ties" today from season five, and while it was not the best episod ever, I think it deserves a mention here both for Dawn's initial reaction to finding out she's the key (especially when she talks with Joyce), and then for Buffy's speech about how Dawn is her sister, no matter how she got there. It warms my sisterly heart.

Yes on that one! I saw that one for the first time a few weeks ago(I'm watching the episodes through FX and kind of alternating with Angel) and I just got goosebumps at the end.

Entirely pointy.

Helpless and Killed by Death are both favorites of mine because they show that even when she is vulnerable, Buffy is a hero.

It's funny you mention "Who are You" because it's one of my favourite episodes but I always get that mixed up with the title of the previous episode - "This Year's Girl"

And you are so right - the acting is wonderful - I have heard criticism of SMGs performances in the latter series but I think this episode blows those complaints out of the water!

Amends! Amends! Amends!

Hardly ever gets a mention, but definitely one of the best ever.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that Joss Whedon said somewhere that he thinks so too...

or maybe I just want to think that...

I juat watched "Forever", the episode just after the body, and I must say, it is amazing as well. Spike and Dawn always shine together, the guy Dawn got the spell from was just CREEPY, and Buffy's breakdown at the end... I cringe at the Angel tidbits (I never could stomach Angel's returns -- its the only part of
"Chosen" I don't like, ugg), but barring that.

How about "The Initiative?"

I just watched it and was reminded that it was actually a very good episode with many funny parts such as:

1) Riley's fumbling flirting with Buffy.
2) Harmony and Xander's catfight
3) Spike's newly chippedness and his inability to bite Willow.

I think it's definitely one of the most underrated eps.

I'm just watching 'Amends' at the moment - it's never as good as it is on Christmas Eve though! I'm pretty sure it's mentioned quite a bit as a stand-out episode tho, it def appears in a lot of top fives.
One of my fav bits (which just went by) in it is when Oz and Willow hug and Willow's hand curls into a little fist as if she never wants to let go! Awwww.....

"The Zeppo." I don't know if it gets mentioned a lot, I haven't read a whole lot of lists, but I really love this episode. The reason I love it so much is because it is such a triumph for Xander, who is, for all purposes, us in the show. He's a fan, he recognizes (as we do) when things are cool, and best of all, he has no superpowers and somehow is indispensable to Buffy.

In the same way, I love Potential, for the power it gives Dawn, Xander and us all.

And it got me all choked up.

Oh, the Initiative was a great episode. Spike not being able to bite Willow. "Maybe you could wait a little while and try again?" And the cat fight in slo-mo was great!

Season six is still my favorite year.

Ok, perhaps it's nt a completely overlooked episode (Amends), but I always felt like it never quite gets the credit it deserves...
Bonus points for the introduction of The First.

THIEFJEHAT

I see that "Anne" is listed above. In keeping with the spirit of things that are never mentioned, I'll add a little something about a character from this episode who is largely forgotten.

Lily's boyfriend. Remember him? I bet you had to take a moment and think there. His name was Ricky. People forget all about him. If you recall, he was in a diner scene early in the episode and then he vanishes. A few days later buffy discovers Ricky aged to just under 80 years old and that he commited suicide.

Well here's a little something about Ricky. Last year FX was playing this episode and I was sitting in front of a TV with the sound turned down playing a board game (puerto rico) with friends and listening to the Metalica album "black" (the last good CD they turned out I have always contended). The song Unforgiven came on right at the moment Buffy discovered Ricky's elderly body and then it hit me like a train. That song could be renamed "Ricky's Lament". Here are the lyrics pasted from a lyrics website

New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pained disgrace
the young boy learns their rules
with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's known
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away.

They dedicate their lives
to running all of his
he tries to please them all
this bitter man he is
throughout his life, a slave
he battles constantly
this fight he cannot win
a tired man they see no longer cares
the old man then prepares
to die regretfully
that old man here is me

This song almost perfectly describes the horror of being enslaved as a teen, having your identity stripped away, and worked as a slave until you are to elderly to toil any longer.
The line "The young boy learns their rules" melds perfectly with the sequence where the demons line up the slaves and ask them the Q "Who are you?" with the answer "I'm no one" You can also see how at the end of the first stanza Ricky most likely swore that he'd hold the memory of Lily in his mind as a way of keeping his sense of self and not allowing them to strip him of his will. But as you get into stanza 2, the hopelessness of the situation sinks in. Decade after decade rolls by and eventually all is forgotten beyond the slavery and toil. Then one day with his will and body broken and his memorys erased by years of trauma & tyranny, the demon overlords see that he is worthless and he is expelled back into LA. And when I heard the song end with "The old man then prepares, to die regretfully. That old man here is me" I could almost see the elderly Ricky saying these things to himself before he consuming the drain cleaner that kills him.

It was a shocking parallel to the buffy episode to hear that song. And I've never listened to it the same way since.

Do not fear me. Ours is a peaceful race, and we must live in harmony.
