Why did I resist this show in the beginning?

I never 'hated' this show, but I do recall actively resisting watching it. I did watch, now and then, but never really got hooked while it was on. Not until I saw Firefly , and become such a fan of Joss, did I even remotely consider this an above average show.

And now ? I can't get enough! I can't explain, but I thank the maker for DVDs.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Same here. I've just recently started my third viewing of the dvds, although this time around I'm skipping select episodes (which I never do with Firefly). Just finished the third season, which I feel is the best of the series.

Before, whenever I stumbled across it channel surfing it didn't click for me at all, in fact it seemed rather stupid and pointless. But once you get to know the characters it is entirely different. It's the same way with Angel, which I think is even better, but of course Firefly is the best of all, the best tv ever.

If anyone remembers my previous thread (Renouncing My Ways), they'll know that I loathed this show once upon a time. It's strange though, how it kind of sneaks up on you. First you're going "ho hum, I suppose I'll give it a try", then all of a sudden you're hanging on to every word. The genius of Joss at work.

You just nailed it. I think part of it for me was the whole demon/ vamp / magic thing. I generally yawn at the 'vampire' genre, so I had to fight through that right off. But its the characters that are so incredible. And the writing that goes along w/ the characters. All the little things , the subtle references to things past or underlying plots to be played out later on.... it's so damn addictive! Oh, and the humor. I've laughed more and more in watching Buffy/Angel over again at all the jokes / puns I missed the 1st time around.

hee hee, resistance is futile

it's true that you don't have to like vampires or fantasy to get something out of buffy and angel, the same way you don't have to like sci fi to appreciate firefly, joss is all about the characters and they could be anywhere, in any situation.

Yeah, the third had it all. But strangely, I find myself re-watching the final season the most- might be that it's just the most serious season...overall, I mean...The Body and Villains were pretty serious.

Unfortunately, lots of veteran sci-fi fans have never been exposed to Firefly, and even when offered the opportunity, turned it down.

For me I remember a fellow at work bringing in the "new" DVD set when it came out and offering to loan it to me. I looked at the box, sighed, and said something like...I can't get emotionally invested in any new shows at this point in my life.

Purely by accident, I caught the movie Serenity on HBO, about the last 3/4. Although I was a bit confused about the movie I knew there was something that greatly appealed to me. I went to Amazon.com that night and looked up reviews for it and Firefly. I couldn't believe the amazing reviews for Firefly...thousands of 'em..all with rating of 5 stars!

I was too embarrassed to ask that guy at work to borrow his DVD set, so I ordered the DVD set and the movie....the rest is history for me....a Browncoat through & through...spreading the word, and watching the shows as often as I can.

Lesson learned....don't be jaded or judgemental...just believe!

From my 'outside looking in' perspective, Firefly and Buffy were totally different. Before I checked out Buffy on DVD, my opinion was " Oh, pretty/spunky/ cute H.S. kids fighting demons, winning, and everything working out by the end of the episode. " ~ YAWN. I mistakenly thought it was all cut and dry, and that nothing really happened. In contrast, Firefly was gritty, dusty, and more 'real'. Rich Alliance types had the fancy, high tech toys, while those on the outter rim planets had to get by with what little they had. SERENITY, the ship, wasn't some marvel of technology with a sexy on board hologram computer or wicked photon weapons or cloaking ability. She's a cargo ship. And her crew is always in search for new cargo to transport from point A to B, and then get paid for the job.

When you're in your 30's, as I was when Buffy was on, it's tougher to identify w/ kids in their tweens who are fighting monsters and magic every night. Mal and his less than glamorous situation, the real life struggles, hit a bit closer to home, at least for me.

I think the simplest explanation for why the average person would be reluctant to try it is that when they hear of a show called "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", they naturally assume it has to be as dumb as it sounds. I know that that was the case with me--I didn't finally cave in and give it a shot until the re-runs started on FX (late-'02), and even then it was only because there was nothing else on in that time slot, and I figured there were a lot worse things to spend an hour looking at than Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan.

Anyway, glad to hear you finally gave it a chance, and have enjoyed it...

You took the words right out of my mouth...or off my keyboard. It took my "Firefly" addiction to make me seek out more of Joss' work. They happened to be showing "Buffy" on UPN (we don't have cable) and the rest is history. Thank you Netflix!

i'm right there with ya. i always kinda shyied away from buffy, i just thought it was weird and kinda silly. but then, yeah, firefly got me, and next thing i knew i was looking for anything else jossish, and then i was *so* thrilled to have something that DIDNT get canceled partway through the first season. so i've been making my way through it since with netflix, up till season 5 where i just started buying, so now i've just finished season 6 (the end of which was VERY UPSETTING! WHY JOSS, WWHHYYYY!!!?!?!?), and i'm happily anticipating my next paycheck which will lead to season 7.

Unlike most, I kind of liked the movie. Not the cartoonish mess that clueless director Fran Kuzui made it into, or half the cast, but I somehow sensed the "Jossness" of it. What I mean is that there was something potentially wonderful underneath all the crap. I was big into horror at the time, too. Also knew SMG somewhat from AMC, but that didn't have all that much to do with choosing to watch, I don't think. Been a fan of the show literally since Day 1. Connected immediately with Willow (her shyness, mainly) and Xander (his dorkiness, sarcasm, and eventually, loyalty to those he loves) and the "High School As Hell" theme, the writing, the cast, and that was it for me.

That's easy. Whenever I came across BtvS while channel surfing I always watched it for like 20 seconds and then switch channels shaking my head thinking that there are too many stupid shows on televsion. Like you I had to get hit with Firefly first which then made me think about the writer and director and what OTHER things have they done? I was shocked when I found out Joss did BtVS, and it took at least 2 months before I watched season 1 became interested. After season 2 I was hooked, and after viewing season 3 I was enslaved.

My fav seasons now are 3 and 7, with 6 and 4 following.

Yeah, I absolutely love the Buffy series now. But I have to confirm that I also didn't watch it when it was originally on. I think it was a combination of a couple of reasons...

1. The movie had come out not too recently and had bombed pretty bad.

2. I always thought of it as a show geared specifically to girls for some reason.

3. I was just really busy and didn't have time to watch much television anyway.
