Okay, so now we know the owner of the cinnamon lip gloss is.
But...BUFFY STRAYING ONTO THE ALL-GIRLS TEAM???
Whoah.
I mean, being a red-blooded kinda guy, it's cool and all...but is it in character? She sure has been feeling not-close to peeps for a while, so...
And the dialogue was gorram hi-larious at times; I love Andrew-related stuff!

Thoughts?

Yeah, I thought it was a really strange left-field turn. I mean, I remember some hints of it I think in the last issue, but this made me think "Did I miss something in the previous comics?" And while they did kinda explain it, and have the first real LOL moment in the comics so far (I also loved the Superman jokes between Andrew and Willow), this very abrupt moment in established continuity is one of the things that in my mind weakens BUFFY as a whole as well as Joss. He has this tendency to do just wild, random crazy things to create dramatic tension with very little build-up or foreshadow. And while sometimes it works (like with Wash getting killed), other times it's more of a middle finger to fans (like Tara's death).

It can be a dice-roll whether it works or not...haven't made up my mind whether it worked here...

Chris, you hadn't gotten the cinammon lip gloss thing 'til now?

No, seriously, it was revealed that it was her lip gloss in, I think issue #4, but I'd been thinking that was some kind of mis-lead until Scott Allie, in the lettercol 2 or 3 issues ago, basically came right out and said it was Satsu who kissed her. So much for the mis-lead theory.

Anyway, as for what happened this issue, I didn't have a problem with it. People are complaining about how out-of-character it is for her, but I really don't think it is. She's never had a girl make an overt move on her before, so how do we know how she would've reacted to it? If you take vamp-Willow from "Doppelgangland" out of the equation, then Willow never showed any tendencies until Tara in mid-S4. Was that then out-of-character, too?

Besides, we found out in "Power Play" that Spike and Angelus apparently had something, umm... , so what's the difference?

Here's what Joss had to say about it in an interview:
Quote:

NRAMA: With this story, there’s a large character step for Buffy here in that she takes another Slayer as a lover. Was that your plan originally, or something (writer) Drew (Goddard) included in his story?

JW: What it was is that I had introduced the character and the dynamic that one of the Slayers was in love with Buffy, and we went to the place that we often will of - it would be fun to see her dancing around it a little bit: “I am pretty lonely, she is pretty hot, and she really likes me. I trust her, we’re all out here, I’m an open-minded gal... and did I mention that she really likes me?”

We thought we could have a little fun playing with her thinking about that, and Drew took the point of view that it plays a lot better if it just happens.

NRAMA: And any thinking about it has to come after the fact...

JW: Right. Rather than just being coy about it, and the whole “will they/won’t they?” Just have it happen, and then have them be coy about it. Awkwardly, nakedly, coy. Have all the silly fun of the French farce where everyone runs into the room, and then have the genuine emotion of “Did I use this person? Did I manipulate this person?” And they’re both thinking that. They’re both wondering if they’re going to get hurt or if they’re going to hurt the other person, and whether or not they should have done it. Not due to any moral reason or anything. It’s not a huge life change for Buffy. She’s not gay. Sexuality is a spectrum. Many of us have experimented in our youth – that’s what youths are for.

So we knew it wasn’t going to be a giant character shift – it was just going to be nice fodder for Buffy to be going through something besides felling lonely and disconnected and having the weight of the world on her shoulders. It was nice for something nice to happen to her, and then for her to get kind of awkward about it.

Yeah – we liked the arena, and it was Drew who pushed for it just to happen. And I liked to not have to go “In the next issue... the kiss which proves she’s heterosexual!” like they do on tv. I like that it all just happened.

Here's the whole interview: http://www.whedon.info/Joss-Whedon-Buffy-Season-8-Comic,26286.html

The only part of it that bothers me is actually how in-character this is for Buffy, in that she seems to be making the same mistake she did with Spike in S6: using someone who really cares about her (who's feelings she doesn't return to the same degree) to make herself feel better, less lonely. Hasn't she learned anything in the years since then?

Having her make the same mistake over and over... is that staying true to the character and who she is, or is it just a lack of further development of the character? I'm not even really sure...

I think with Spike it was almost purely self-destructive...not so much with Satsu. Maybe it's just different in degrees, but I don't see loss of self-image coming from this one.

I had originally decided to wait till next week to pick up Buffy along with Serenity but my rss feed showed me that there was perhaps a bit of mainstream controversy in this issue. So I trudged down to the comic store and picked it up so I could maybe avoid being spoilered with it. I read it through the first time and couldn't see anything particularly controversy inducing. Reading it through again to see what I had missed I thought, "Maybe it's the Buffy Satsu thing? But really that can't be a big deal in Buffy terms can it." And then I read the threads over at Whedonesque. Shows what I know.

I'm not ashamed to say I saw it coming. Given her unlucky streak with men from the series. That said, I haven't picked up any of the season eight comics, I've just recently started getting money, so, I'll be retroactively buying them.
Having said THAT, I LOVE spoilers!

That, plus she's now living in a castle with about a hundred slayers... and Xander. Her options for male companionship are pretty limited these days.

And since this is generally accepted to be about 2 years after the end of the series, as far as we know she's now gone over 3 years (Spike, in "As You Were", S6) without having her tires rotated. Hey, people get lonely...

*double takes* Woah, woah, woah, WOAH!! Buffy slept with a girl?!... Wait, this is Joss's work. Why am I surprised?

well I could kind of see it... Buffy has been VERY lonely, and according to the magic of that sleeping spell she knew that what Satsu felt was TRUE LOVE...
so if she was ever thinking of seeing what all the girl on girl fuss was about, this would be the time.
I gathered, from Joss' interview, that the Buffster will worry that she took advantage of Satsu, but also that Satsu will worry that she took advantage of Buffy...so everyone will be very uncomfortable
(which is always a win win for Joss & company)

Besides the whole French Farce silliness of Buffy wanting to keep this secret, and then absolutely everyone bursts into her bedroom! LOL
What is not to love?

I LOVED Andrew, every word was gold...
I'm also loving Xander & Renee.

I'm really enjoying the writing and artwork and everything....

Well yes, Sexuality is pretty fluid in the Jossverse. And heck, Buffy slept with two dead guys, a girl doesn't sound that odd in comparison.

Seriously though, it *is* made very clear that Buffy hasn't switched teams. She was lonely. She was needy. She was going through an epic length dry spell. And Satsu was there. It's not that surprising. People need contact, and slayers seem to need it more than most.

I'm much more interested in what happens to the scythe. Especially given the spoilery cover to issue #16.
