Likes to mess with stuffs.

A new incarnation of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer[ could be coming to the big screen.

"Buffy" creator Joss Whedon isn't involved and it's not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.

The movie?

(The link doesn't work for me, as I am on dial up. Dial up makes many things not work, as well as makes me die a little inside)

Strangely, as long as it's a reluanch of the movie, I'm cool with it. The movie, was not Joss's vision anyways (nor is it a favorite of mine) so to have someone remake that is alright. Perhaps they will mold it more closely to what he was going for. Who knows.

Now if it was the series, them there's fightin' words.

I read about this over at Superherhype.com and I think to make a Buffy movie that ignores the 7 seasons that were on TV and didn't have SMG is just ridiculous. That's not Buffy. That's just another vampire movie. You can't have Buffy without Joss or any of the original cast. I don't see what the problem would be to keep it in line with the series.

why would they do that? it just seems kinda dumb to "remake or relaunch" a movie that was cute, and then had a very successful tv series. makes no sense to me.

Sounds to me like the Kuzuis are desperate for money!

That would be my first instinct as well, but then again, there are many who said you couldn't do Star Trek with a new cast and new creators, and that turned out pretty kick-ass.

SO, I'm not jazzed for this new take, but I'll give it a shot. If it sucks, I'll forget it as quickly as the original movie. If it's good... cool.

Nope. Can't be done. Old fans won't buy it & new ones won't dig the idea- it was new at the time but it's been done to death now.
Just a cash-grab at the current "Twighlight" wake.

My take is that it will suck - just like the original movie sucked, with Fran Rubel Kuzui as director. Maybe she thinks that NOW she gets Joss's original concept a little better, since he took seven years to flesh it out for her, but my bet is it will still suck, and I won't be in any rush to go see it.

You wanna get me interested in more Buffy? Let Joss do it, include Spike, and if you really wanna find a new audience while bringing in a lot of the original audience, make it a Broadway musical!

I'm not saying it will be good - yeah, it will probably suck. But what good is complaining about it going to do. It's on them to make a movie - good or bad. I'll wait till I see it to judge it. Not going to waste my time fretting over it.

The only difference between this and Star Trek is the time since the original series and the age of the actors.

The new Star Trek came to mind when I first heard of this too, and I really enjoyed that movie. The thing is that the original crew really can't carry a movie anymore. They've gotten old, so replacing them is more acceptable since the original series aired about 40 years ago.

With Buffy, the cast can still handle the project. Think of it like this: It would be like the original Star Trek movies with a different actors. That just wouldn't have seemed right, because the actors could still portray the roles.

I don't disagree with the notion tht the original cast could still do a movie. But that doesn't change my view of this, either. Sure, I'd prefer to see a Wheon-made movie that picks up from the show. My prefrence doesn't mean that a new version couldn't be worth watching, though.

Perception of a fan(s) does not hve a cause/effect relationship with a potential new movie. A fan of the show may not be able at accept a new version, but that doesn't mean the movie will automatically be bad because siad fan(s) don't want it. I'm open minded enough to give the benefit of the doubt. If it sucks - that's when the knives come out.

And let's face it, the cast members of the show are not exactly box-office draws. Most haven't even been getting work, and the biggest name of the lost has fallen into the DTV ghetto.

Not to mention, when it comes down to it, it's a story aimed at teens. The teen audience is what they'll want to appeal to again - and that's hard to do with a group of actors pushing 40.

BtVS revisited? Indeed?

The Kuzui duo were the two people most responsible for taking Joss's script in 1991 and mangling it so badly he nearly cried. The result was the tangled, jumbled, pile of go-see staring Kristy Swanson in 1992.

And here they come capitalize on the franchise Joss turned into a household name. I fear they will take liberties....grave ones....as Tycho from Penny Arcade relates in a manner far better than I: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/5/28/

What shall the Kuzui duo stich out of their whole cloth? What new shambling horror of storytelling will lurch it's way off their Frankensteinian table?

Oh the humanity.

I don't understand how they can make the Buffy movie without permission from Joss. Doens't he have 'some rights' over the Buffy 'verse?

Nope. He sold the script to the Kazuis when he was starting out. They hired him to develop the series. But he has no ownership of it whatsoever.

Creators rarely control the rights. The only way studios will put up the financing to make something is if they get to own it. George Lucas is about the only guy who managed to keep the rights to what he created.

I guess what irks me is that the person most responsible for that abomination that was the Buffy movie NOW wants a second crack at it, a chance for a "re-imagining" of it, as if in an effort at cranking up a franchise for it.

I've got news for her: It already WAS re-imagined, THE RIGHT WAY, when Joss did seven years of the show. He also made a hell of a franchise of it, one which is still going.

Star Trek's new jump-start I can handle; it was done more as an homage to (and in honor of) Gene Roddenberry's original. ALL of the Star Trek franchise have been done with respect to Roddenberry and his wife. I just don't feel like Kuzui has paid Joss any respect at all, and has only left him to clean up her mess.

No thanks. Either Joss does Buffy or I don't buy a ticket. Let them have a box office blunder if that's what they want, but the movie's going no where without the fans behind it.

Couldn't agree more, Zeek. And that's where the Buffy/Star Trek reboot comparisons break down - for the most part, the vast majority of the Trekkies ARE behind the Trek reboot.

Sure, now. Didya happen to see the constant whining over little details before then? This site was loaded with them (Wah, the ship looks different - it's gonna suck!!!), and actual Trek sites... whoah.

If it gets made, and it sucks, I'll skip it, or at the least tear it apart.

But if it's good? I'll enjoy it, plain and simple. Not going to hate on something just because it's not how I wanted to see it done.

Awww now, BSCM - this isn't the FIRST time we've agreed on something. Like Jongsy, you and I probably aren't even that far apart on how we view the world - it's just that you're looking from one side, and I'm looking from the other. It don't change what we're looking at; just how we see it.

Good point. Heck, I wish it WOULD be good. I wish it would be GREAT - it would just bring more people into the Whedonverse, and that's never a bad thing!

But the odds aren't great, is all I'm sayin'...
