OK, so I know these "Top Films Of All Times" lists usually cause a lot of controversy, so I just ignore that part. This one however, really got me going. Empire magazine gave their top (I think) 200 movies of all time list, and I couldn't keep quiet. I thought they were fairly justified with Empire Strikes Back at number 2 (it has stood the test of time very well), along with some others, but I can't see The Shawshank Redemption as being the greatest film ever, and Schindler's List being number 45!! Serenity does not rank (probably because of it's newness), but Joss gives some good commentary on some films. He calls The Matrix "a movie that's gets tighter everytime you watch it.". I got that out of my system. Thanks.

I think you'll find that the Empire top 200 was as voted for by readers of Empire - which explains some of the randomness, as the brain capacity of people in the plural tends to be directly inversely proportional to the number of people gathered together...

Another notable problem with polls of this kind is that people are far and away more likely to name the film they have just seen as one of the best, as it is uppermost in their mind, rather than say “It Happened One Night” (great film) or any other black and white classic …

You'd think that Serenity would have made it into the Empire top 200, considering Empire Online were raving about the movie for months before it was released!

I haven't seen the list and preface my real comment with the obligatory praise. I cannot get enough of Firefly and all things Firefly right now, there is nothing on TV worth watching and I keep passing over a bunch of loaned recent Oscar winning DVDs to watch reruns of FF.

But, there is something about Shawshank. I don't know that I would make it my all time favorite movie - I don' like lists anyway, but when it airs on TV (and it airs a lot) I cannot resist watching it until the credits.

The real test will be if the two will ever be on against each other to see where my psyche actually takes me.

So from a fellow Browncoat, I can see that the rest of the mainstream would be drawn to Shawshank. It has components of the same storytelling that Joss just does extremely well, mainly great character depth.

... I'm in.
