What powers Serenity? I heard a mention of fuel rods. This implies radioactive material. I assume you can't get this stuff at the general store on a typical hick planet. Are there gas station/convienience stores in space? "Truck" stops?

On a ship that size
how can Kaylee do all repairs herself? Will she get a pit crew to help her? (Hopefully, all female.)

How does the ship achieve it's own gravity in space?

Will Wash ever get a co-pilot? On long trips he can't always be at the helm. What happens if he gets sick or injured?

Why did Mal name the ship Serenity, implying peace and calm, and then hire a crew that is a gaurantee of trouble?

Did he name it Serenity as a hope for peace, or is he just a big fan of 21st century adult film star Serenity? (and will she appear in a cameo?)

Its been shown that Mal at least can pilot the ship. Probably not as well as Wash, but competently enough to fill in from time to time.

This was also explained in the unaired pilot. Serenity was named after The Battle of Serenity that Mal took part in during the war.

Exact type of fuel used is unknown so far. River mentioned something about the Firefly-class using a "radion accelerator core". And yes, there are fuel stations that any ship can stop at.

On a ship that size how can Kaylee do all repairs herself? Will she get a pit crew to help her? (Hopefully, all female.)

Wash seems to have quite a bit of mechanical knowledge himself, and has been seen helping Kaylee out on several occasions.

Hasn't been explained.

At one point in the unaired pilot, Captain Mal takes over for Wash at the helm, and seems comfortable with the controls.
