I like words, and it's nice when you find they come from somewhere cool.

Around the 1500s, the rent a farmer paid to his landlord for the farmland was called "greenmayle."

Reivers come calling after dark, and (If you know what's good for you) you paid them "blackmayle."

Also, you come into contact with reivers, someone is likely to end up "bereaved."

This second derivation I liked for the forehead-smacking "of course...why did I never see that before?" factor.
