Spoiler for the first 15 minutes of the movie below:

The first time you see the whole crew in the movie, it's a long tracking shot through the ship. You see that everyone's on edge and everything's in bad shape. Then Mal goes on a rant about how important this mission is because the ship and crew are hanging on to this way of life (and life in general) by a thread. He says they were incredibly lucky to get this mission, and if this fails, it'll be the end of them.

I'm starting to believe this was Whedon's commentary on the state of the franchise. After all, he ended Firefly the series by literally "leaving us hanging" out in space. It seems like him to speak to the audience/hardcore fans in this way. Of course, seeing the movie for the first time today I immediately thought of the disappointing box office numbers.

This thought added to the almost sick-making constant edge-of-death feeling I got while watching the movie. And afterward, I couldn't help thinking about that scene.

Do you guys think I'm reading too much into this?

Probably.

Certainly when it comes to your point about "Objects In Space", that was hardly the way Joss intended to end the series. It only worked out that way because of the early cancellation. No message to read there.

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.
