AIMINGTOMISBEHAVE

Heart of Gold was my least fav. episode the first time I watched it but when I got mu hands on the dvd set I found myself watching it a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. There are just too many hilarious one liners in it to be ignored and the dialogue is powerful at certain parts. Namely the scene between Mal and Nandi be-fore the sex scene (also the discussion about Nandi's guns was good). I laugh so hard every time Wash says "Three point, Four hour. Should do it."

It also gives us some insight to the depth of Inara's feelings for Mal. The whole bedroom crying scene tends to tug at the heart.

However I still cringe at certain parts. I just cannot stand the actor who plays Rance. Every thing he does down to his mannerism and gestures is downright hokey. Like the part where he waves his hand and says "So there can be no doubt,". His dinky cell phone in that scene is pretty damn cheesey too. Ah well the episode has a special place in my heart.

This is also my least favorite episode. I agree with what you pointed out, as well as...why would that whore turn on the whorehouse for Rance, especially when he humiliates her in front of the entire town of menfolk? What does she get out of it?

Also, Rance's "hovership" (or whatever you call it) reminds me of the Star Wars landspeeder. Besides that - the lassiter is hideous and clunky-looking.

It also irritates me that Jayne chooses to spend his time with one of the ugliest whores. And I see that crimping irons make it safe and sound into the future.

Also, totally shallow reasons: i.e. Nandi sleeps with Mal.

Redeeming quality? At the end, during Nandi's funeral, Inara and many of the other girls are wearing some article of white clothing. In Chinese cluture, this is the color of death and mourning. I thought that was a nice touch, even if it wasn't intentional.

***Never judge a book by its movie***

I dont think the sex between Nandi and Mal was very shallow. I mean the man has been without nookie for a long time and I dont see Inara getting any cozier with Mal. It also lead to the scene with Inara crying in the other room which tell us that her feelings for Mal are even deeper than we thought. I mean I was surprised at her crying. I didnt think companions cried over guys.

Jayne: "Thats why I never kiss 'em on the mouth."

River: "He looks better in red."

My take:
Well, as for what the whore gets for turning on everyone: money, for one. Rance gives her money for her information. And what are whores in the biz for if not money? Also, I'm sure there's some kind of "we won't kill you" promise. She thinks Rance will win, so she throws her lot in with him. She's weak. Simple.

The other reasons, I see your point, though maybe Jayne likes crimped blonde hair, who knows? Still doesn't detract from a good episode.

I don't think Mal sleeping with Nandi was shallow or whatever. He doesn't know how Inara feels about him, so he moves on. Add to that, he probably liked Nandi on her own terms as well.

I give to you the Seeker of Serenity, the Valkyrie Warrior, the Gourmet Cook and the Truth Scoper.

It was actually one of my favorites. The one liners and the final advancement in plot- things had to come to ahead with Mal and Inara, and that was a damn good way if you ask me!

Also I don't know how many people watch the O.C. but the whore that Mal slept with was Julie Cooper from the O.C. This may make the episode less appealing but I feel it's my duty to pass on unintelligent bits of info.

The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems.

Hi All,

While I agree, this is not the strongest episode in the series, it does have some great lines. One of the things that I thought was rather cutting edge (and is rarely talked about) was the fact that the whorehouse has MALE prostitutes as well. In the opening scene, there is a rather effeminate young man helping hang the laundry. Then of course, there are two of my favourite lines:

Kaylee: "Look, they got boy whores! Isn't that thoughtful? Wonder if they service girlfolk at all."

NANDI: "You ain't looked at one of 'em as
long or as lovin' as you looked at those pistols. You're not sly, are you? 'cause I got my boys..."

MAL: (totally comfortable with the question)
"Sly? No. I lean towards womenfolk. Just one thing at a time. Never like complications."

Although they "boy whores" are definitely background decorations, the fact that they are there and no one except Kaylee comments on it is significant in and of itself.
