Not sure if this is the forum to speculate on episodes and story arcs that might have been (or may yet be), but I started thinking about the idea that had Firefly had a decent run, 6 or 7 seasons and had we been given a series finale, does it seem logical that the Alliance would eventually fall, that there would be a second war?

Of course Mal would be totally against fighting in this second war, choosing to remain neutral and not choose sides (and not be burned again) but eventaully, I think, he would regain his faith in the resistance and his beleif that this time things would be different, no longer a lost cause, but real hope for victory. The finale would be intevitable, victory for the resistance and the fall of the alliance.

seems to close to star wars and others "save the world from the big bad guys" movies or tv show for me. Or, only for a true ending of the show, after many seasons, but with just the begin of the war, with no indication of victory of one side or another.
One of the things i love in Firefly is precisely that, they only try to save their lives and help some friends (not always with sucess, another thing i like). And occasionaly be big damn heroes, like in Serenity, and just for "weak(ened) their regime", never a decisive victory.

I think there may have been a brief Alliance civil war, or a coup, but nothing like a redux of "Independents vs Alliance." Joss has always said and tried to show the Alliance as a morally gray institution, neither truly evil nor truly good, so I imagine there might have been a conflict between factions within the Alliance (perhaps precipitated by the key reveal in the BDM) and Mal might somehow have gotten caught in the crossfire.

But I think the whole metaphor of "losing" at Serenity Valley was that you don't get any do-overs. You can't just refight the same war a few years later, it defeats the whole weight of "losing" in the first place if the Independents eventually triumph (or at least rise again). There might have been another war, but it would have been a different war fought for different reasons by (mostly) different people. The Browncoats lost their war, now it's up to the next set of opponents.

Blue Sun vs Alliance? Alliance Old Guard ("old men covered in blood") vs Alliance Reformers? Hopefully someday, we'll find out.

I don't why people are just assuming that the Independents were the good guys. Yes the Alliance was the aggressor, yes they fought a war for the wrong reasons, yes they used brutal methods in the war but has anyone stopped to think that maybe the Browncoats were a lot worse than the Alliance? Maybe that Unification War was really for the greater good even if it was started for the wrong reasons. Maybe the Alliance didn’t bomb Shadow into a blackrock just to lower the Browncoat’s morale and that they had a good strategic reason for doing it.

it's clear, that Alliance are Independants are gray. I don't know what the dark side of the Independant, except that they let their troups die in Serenity valley during the ending of war negotiation. But, i can't follow a governement who make experiences on their people as on the River's Academy and

from movie, Miranda , with a genocide as result

. And i say governement, because i know few things about the Alliance. Perhaps, bases are good, but they seems very corrupted.

PS: what's this history of "bomb Shadow into a blackrock". i don't remember anything about that in the show or the movie. It's on the books? where can find infos on this?

The captain in "Bushwacked" said that he hasn't seen torture like the reaved ship since the war so at least some of the Browncoats were cruel. It also made me think that if the show had gone on, the Reaver's origins would have had something to do with the war.

According to the RPG book, Shadow was bombed into a blackrock.

I don't reckon there would have been. Because the basis of the series was the characters and how they survived post-war and lived their everyday lives. I beleive The Unification War was just background to establish why Mal bought Serenity and is doing what he is doing, and doesn't like the Alliance etc.

We just assumed the Browncoats were good because we are seeing this in Mal's perspective and we get all the info form him. ANd we like him too hehe! BUt i dont think they were "bad" per se they just disagreed with unification so strongly that it turned to conflict. I dunno maybe....

ok, i forget this. one point for you.
But, in each war, torture and crimes of war are on the both side. I have no doubt Aliance do the same.
Thanks for the info, about Shadow. But saying Alliance have near destroyed a planet and the people leaving in (how many? 30 millions like in Miranda? 6 milliards like on Earth) can't make me turn on Alliance side.
Is there infos on the RPG about others planets bombed by the Alliance or perharps, by the Independants too? as i know, only borders planets and the Rim have been touched by the war.

As Mal say to the captain: "May not have been the winning side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one."

Yeah, I know, shades of gray...and yet even if considered from a very general point of view I have a difficult time not seeing the Alliance as an overpowering, inherently evil organization for one simple reason - they wish to force their will upon everyone in the verse. In the movie, they called it "enlightenment" but River was right, what right do they have force their own brand of enlightenment on peoples who don't want it, who want to be free to make their own decisions?

Mal may not fight for the independents anymore, but he's still fighting the war by bucking the system, being the fly in the ointment. Smuggling is the perfect vehicle for this, bringing contraband to the oppressed, giving them what the alliance says they can't have. Mal is, maybe even without knowing it, constantly reminding people what they lost when they lost the war.

Eventaully, logically, the alliance will fall. It's arm stretches too far, it's oppression is forced on too many people who are willing to fight back against it.

It might have been interesting to see the Alliance struggling to retain power with their stretched resources, but I would have hated another full out war. You couldn't have anyone doing anything about it as several members of the crew are neutral or pro-Alliance. And to have it as a background thing would have been weak sauce.

It would be interesting if we saw a planet that supported Independence during the war but are now accepting the Alliance. It may be wrong to force your values onto others but that does not mean the outcome has to be bad. We pretty much forced our values on many of the losing countries after WW2, especially Japan, it might have been wrong at the time but it resulted in something good in the end.

Look at it this way....

The Alliance in our world now would be like the UN 'ruling' over every country on earth. In other words, it would never work.

So i agree that eventually the Alliance would fall.
