This is either a pretty stupid comment or it's so common of knowledge that no one thought to write it down lately (just showing how slow on the uptake I am). I was watching Serenity last night, and I suddenly had a revelation. I think Shepherd Book, at least at one time, was an operative. It would explain how he knew so much about the Alliance, weapons, secret parlimentary workings, and the like. It would also explain why in the episode Safe the Alliance commander was suddenly so willing to give him medical attention after he saw his ID card, as well as the preacher knowing about the way operatives work.

Would it also explain how he is able to aim with a gun? and if i recall correctly he punched a guy in the pilot.

A lot of people agree with you. If you look in the archived threads you'll see Book being an operative has been hashed over quite a bit.
