TITAN BOOKS TO GIVE FANS LONG-AWAITED FIREFLY COMPANION

Fresh from their success with the SFX Reader Award-winning Serenity: The Official Visual Companion, Titan Books is thrilled to announce the acquisition of World Rights for the first-ever companion to Joss Whedon’s cult television series Firefly.

Titan Books, leading publisher of graphic novels and film and television companions, promises that Firefly: The Official Companion, scheduled for publication this summer, will be just what the show’s fervent fans, the Browncoats, have been waiting for.

Editor Adam Newell says, “We can’t reveal details just yet, but rest assured that we are planning to make this Big Damn Book as shiny as possible…” Anyone who wants to receive updates about the project should send an email with the subject header “Firefly” to readerfeedback@titanemail.com.

20th Century Fox VP, Domestic Licensing, Michael Peikoff notes, “We are confident that the creative team at Titan Books will ‘dead-on’ deliver to both the Firefly and Whedon fan base. This highly anticipated title, though slated for Summer 2006, is already receiving terrific buzz in the marketplace. We could not be more pleased to be working with Titan Publishing on this project.”

Set 500 years in the future, Firefly centres around Mal Reynolds, captain of the ship-for-hire Serenity, and his eclectic crew of galactic misfits. The sci-fi television series has been a DVD phenomenon, selling almost half a million copies. The spin-off movie Serenity, which continues the Firefly story, was a commercial and critical success in the US and UK.

Titan was a natural choice as publisher of the Firefly companion. The company has long been a supporter of Joss Whedon’s work, having sold more than 200,000 Whedon-related titles, and Titan’s recently released Serenity companion has proved a huge success with fans, winning the SFX Magazine Reader Award for Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year.

As much as I hate to see Fox make more dough, I'm really looking forward to this... unless Joss and the cast aren't closely involved.

Yep. We'll be seeing more of Firefly/Serenity sooner than we think I think.

From what I have heard that DVD sales of Serenity were actually better than what Universal was expecting which can only bode well for our chances.

Sounds good to me ,they obviously think the fan base is there ,and that this will sell.

It also keeps Firefly/Serenity on the radar, and if Fox can see that anything related to the verse is snapped up by the fans ,it might make them reconsider the scrapping of the show.

Forever hopeful

I believe in Serenity

I'm with you KiltedBC.

No matter the format...or how small in comparison to the series or BDM, a new Firelfy/Serenity project is great news.

The Serenity Visual Companion book they produced had a lot of great stuff, but with 14 episodes to draw from a Firefly book would have a lot more potential material. Among other things I hope they include large scale plans (not just sketches) of Serenity's interior and exterior. I sent an email to the Titan Books email address referenced in the article above and suggested that. I suggest that anyone who wants to see features email them as well.

Wouldn't it be better if Fox makes lots and lots of dough from this? They own the rights and the only way we'll see more is if someone notices that money is being made and recognizes the potential for more. They might start to see that they've got the makings of a franchise.

That's the thing that's got me excited. A Fox VP actually gave a positive comment about their hopes for the book, instead of just releasing something like this without a statement. Because of that, it seems sure now that Fox is noticing the attention the series is getting and how robust the sales of "Firefly" and "Serenity" DVDs are. The sales of this book might actually be what pushes them over the edge and decide and try the show out again.

I'm hoping, anyway. I'll be buying it

JAYSONAYCH,

Amigo, you just don't get it. Joss will NEVER have anything to do with those bastards. I'm quite sure he will resurrect a TV show only after the Fox TV options expire, however long that may take; or the options are bought out, but that is unlikely given the success of DVD sales for both endeavors.

I don't think anyone's said it before, but it would have been FAR better for the series if Joss had buried the axe and run the Firefly series on the WB, where it might well still be running.

re: novels - I believe that Keith DeCandido, who wrote the first novel, is one of a number of people to have submitted a proposal to write one of the two additional novels that were optioned. The proposal were submitted to Universal, but nothing has been agreed yet.

My gut instinct is that Universal want to make the most of the 3-novel option that they have, and thus are waiting to see whether or not there will be a second (and third!) film made, as a novel of a film is likely to be a better moneymaker than just a novel.

It's been said many times before, but I'm not sure I agree. How good would Firefly have been if Joss had gotten only half as much money for it (which would still have left it an expensive show for the WB)? What would he have given up? Would he have chosen to limit himself to his original concept of the 5 person crew? How good would Firefly have been without Inara? Without Simon? River? Without Book?

I can't imagine it; fortunately, I don't have to. I'm glad Joss got US38Megabucks to make half a season of Firefly. Sure it would be great if it had continued at that level, but I'm unconvinced that more of a lesser show would be better.

I've done a run through of a few other threads and I don't think this has been meantioned before, but there again, so what if it has?

"Volume One". Seeing as we have a companion for Serenity already, and seeing as most often 'Official Companions' feature entire series of a show, not just selected episodes, does that suggest something to anyone?

Well I've discovered the answer to the 'Volume One' thing. It's less of an allusion to a second series, and more just a money-making scam if you ask me.

Having sent an E-mail to Titan Publishers as meantioned in the press release, I recieved the following E-Mail:

Hi! Thanks for signing up to receive more information about our forthcoming book, Firefly: The Official Companion. First, the breaking news - we’ve found so much excellent stuff that this will now be two volumes, not just one!

Things are going really well - we’ve conducted about 20 brand new interviews with the cast and crew so far. Joss Whedon was kind enough to speak to us at length while he was over in the UK recently. In fact, he was sitting in the very London hotel room where he originally had the idea for Firefly!

Be one of the first to see the final cover designs, by going now to: www.titanbooks.com/firefly!

Stay tuned for more hot news soon...

The Titan Books Team
http://www.titanbooks.com

I don't see why this necessitates two volumes. I'd prefer one big expensive volume, as this would feel more... definitive to me.

There again, the fact they feel they have too much information may turn out to be a good thing, depending how much effort they actually put into both volumes.

Time will tell.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Well, the cover art for Volume Two is not bad:

[img] [/img]

That being said, I am not so certain that a second volume is necessarily a bad thing. Sure it is partly fueled by Titan's search for money, but the more money Firefly / Serenity brings in the better our shot at a future. The more shiny things about the show, cast, the 'verse, and Joss I learn the happier a browncoat I'll be.
