Well, my sweetheart knows me too well. I got the DVD "Josss Whedon The Master at Play" for Valentine's Day. I just watched it and thought I'd give a little review.
This disc is an interview and Q&A session given by Joss at the Screenwriting Expo 4 in Los Angeles in November of last year. It includes a very hilarous introduction by Nathan Fillion that's worth the price of the DVD right there, but there's plenty more. Joss talks about how he got into his television and screenwriting career and his love of film, filmmaking and storytelling. It's not so much about Firefly/Serenity as it is about the business of being a professional writer, how he came to bring people onto the writing staffs of his shows and the difference between writing for TV vs that for movies. He talks about the process of breaking a story and seeing it come to life (or, in some cases, not). If you are a die hard Joss fan or someone interested in filmmaking and the way the whole process works or an aspiring (or experienced) screenwriter yourself, buy this DVD. I learned a lot from the interview about Joss and the business of how a writer gets his/her vision on the screen be it big or small.
I may only be a chef, but my background as a cinema minor in college made this a very worthwhile lesson in what to me is only a "spectator sport".
