As I'm new to the Fireflyfans.net 'verse, I'm likely asking a question easy to find: what is Jayne's home planet called? Just turn me about and point me in the right direction and I'll sail from there. Thanks!

I don't believe it's ever been stated what planet Jayne is from. In fact I think we only really know about Mal (Shadow), Inara (Sihnon), and the Tams (Osiris).

Edit: I see you said you were new here. Have you been formally greeted yet? If not look around for FollowMal who dispenses the browncoats we all wear.

SAVEWASH

Now I am learning about scary.

Welcome, ArtemisPrime! It's always nice to have another Browncoat about.

I'm sure FollowMal will find you soon enough. She's pretty good about that, and about keeping plenty of the brown coats in stock -- always in the right size! I don't know how she does it.

You can probably expect all manner of food offerings before long, too.

Enjoy!

I'm FollowMal and I found you! Well, thanks to SaveWash I found you. LOL

Yep, I'm the keeper of the browncoats.. the storeroom clerk and I'm here to hand you your official Browncoat.

*ceremoniously hands ArtemisPrime a browncoat that fits perfectly*

How do I do that?

Anyway, welcome home, ArtemisPrime. We are a happy bunch here and we're glad you are with us.

Really, do expect all manner of good food to be comin' your way. If my assistants are in order they will be by directly.

Strawberries! But the dip's gone for now. They are great on their own, however.

Wow. We need a sticky thread that stays on top and is titled something like "New? Pick up your browncoat and some rations here"

In the official novelisation of the screenplay, it says Jayne comes from a planet called Caliban (a flashback to the day Jayne met Mal & Zoe down the barrel of his gun - from the Out of Gas episode of Firefly).

Just get your hands on the novel - you'll find it in there!!

What page? And why isn't there a world called Caliban listed in the OVC?

It's on page 45 - a couple of pages into a chapter called lilac.

I'm sorry. I got it wrong. They FOUND Jayne on a planet called Caliban. But it doesn't say where he's from.......

I guess Jayne's past is something Joss was going to reveal slowly, over time, through the series.

Curse you, Fox! You've denied us many hours of pleasure finding all these things out about our beloved characters.......

Joss, don't give up on the Serenity 'verse. We want to find out about Jayne's background & past, as well as Book's, and to see if Simon & Kaylee ever do make their relationship work (but I stil think that you would mess around with them, Joss, just like you did with your Angel & Buffy characters).

As in Shakespeare's The Tempest Caliban?

For folks who haven't read The Tempest, Caliban was a native inhabitant of the island the main character Prospero lived on. He sort of represented someone with just primal, bestial urges, lots of lust tossed in.

The Wikipedia article on him is pretty well-written, and will let you make your own conclusions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caliban_%28character%29

I read it with an anti-imperialist interpretation, so my own view on what Caliban represented would start going way off-topic if I elaborated any further. KF

My goodness, but how a topic can run to places you didn't expect...Shakespeare and Firefly?

Hello FellowMal. Thanks for the browncoat. I'll place it in honour next to my Jedi robe (is it okay to love Star Wars and Firefly? she whispered in a tiny voice). As for the strawberries, they were delicious! Thanks.

Wiki says "In recent times, Caliban has been used as a symbol by colonial freedom fighters, especially in the West Indies, because they see him as an aboriginal inhabitant deprived of his land by European colonizers.

Although referred by Prospero as a brutal savage, and treated as a figure of fun and contempt by all of the other characters, it is significant that Caliban is given some of the of the most moving and eloquent speeches in the play."

Hmm, very interesting. Always knew Jayne was eloquent in his own way :) The Shakespeare reference couldn't be a coincidence, Joss takes so much care into his names - and he has used Shakespearean allusion before.

And Kizyr, I'm interested! As long as you can relate it to Jayne or Firefly then I think it's relavent, IMHO

Miranda is Prospero's daughter. Isn't that a coincidence. The Tempest is all over Serenity. I think I read somewhere that Serenity's also has lots of references to Forbiden Planet, a 50's sci fi film that followed The Tempest rather closely.

Somehow I see his family, at least his mother, as a kind old lady, living out her days on the porch knitting hats with her Black market beagle by her side wilst horses roam the Cobb ranch. Or something.

MUST... READ... THE TEMPEST...

Bah, I wish we'd do it in school. Shakespeare's plays are so difficult outside of it. I tried to do MacBeth all by my self and, um, failed.

Maybe that's because I'm 16 and stoopid though

To the original poster, welcome! I am a n00b also, but I love welcoming people, to try and make them feel as much a part of the family as everyone did for me when I joined (a few days ago, heh)
I'm sure you'll love it here, it's great and everyone's so friendly!

Sure, Shakespeare and Firefly. There are all sorts of connections you can make to Firefly and stuff in the world. I've actually started a literature discussion thread because it's an awesome topic to relate to FF.
Oh, BTW, welcome!

Wacky fun!

Nah, Macbeth is one of the Bard's more brutal plays to read. Zero sympathetic characters and a very high body count. You might want to try starting with one of the comedies and work your way to the heavy stuff. Also make sure you have one of the editions with the modern translations on the facing page, it makes it much easier to understand the language in use.

Heh, I think that was my mistake, the copy I have (I bought it for a beauteous 2 euro) has no notes whatsoever. I did Romeo and Juliet in school last year (oh man, I'm feeling my age here, what a little high school kid ) so I have done a teensy bit of Shakespeare before, but I think now I'm going to fork out for a nice, note-filled edition of The Tempest

Actually, there seems to be quite a bit of The Tempest in Serenity. Anonymous (216.199.4.196) wrote quite a nice "essay" on it, as commentary to a fanart piece of mine. I can, for obvious reasons, not ask for her permission. But since she posted this in the public Blue Sun room, I guess no real harm is done repeating it here. She says River shrugging off her jacket, after saying "Miranda",

"... somehow reminded me of the end of the Tempest, where Prospero puts aside his magic mantle to become a whole man again and a better father to his daughter Miranda. No longer broken and consumed with pain over the past, Propero is healed when he realizes what's real and important in life. Anyway, the author of the essay says the central theme of the play is the that the three things most valued in the world are life, liberty, and wonder. (These values shown both in their purity and in the ways they can be perverted.) And the story told in various stages of sleep and consciousness (trance, hallucination, and waking to what is real). So, I began to see all kinds of things in common with Serenity besides the name Miranda, and I had forgotten the character of Ariel (the imprisoned spirit of fire and light). Anyway, I was just wondering whether this was a favorite play of Joss Whedon."

At any rate, all the credit goes to Anonymous (216.199.4.196). I thought it was quite interesting; and I had missed it myself altogether. :)

P.S. Anonymous (216.199.4.196), are you still around? I've missed you. :)
