During the commentary of Out of Gas, I believe Tim Minear refers to subtle clues to an untold Inara story that briefly surfaces during her dialogue with Simon (when Simon, grief stuck says, "It's my birthday." Yeah, you all remember now). He then goes on to say that there are other little clues in other episodes to this untold story. Does anyone have any light to shed on this? Any links or threads that could help me?**

God I love Firefly.

**Apologies if this is a repeat question. To be courteous I scanned every entry so far in the episodes discussion and didn't find anything on the subject. On a positive note, I learned all the ways people abbreviate episode names, and I learned what the hell BD_fill in the blank_ means. (Big Damn ___ Show, Movie, Hero...etc. for newbies like me)

I just posted this in another thread:

In the episode commentaries there is a lot of references to hints about Inara. What makes the most sense to me is some sort of eternal youth.

"I don't want to die at all"
"you look exactly the same as the day I left"

Then when you figure that she runs away from Sihnon, then right as she gets really close to Mal she runs off, it seems that she runs whenever she gets tied down to a place. Maybe she knows that she'll outlive everyone so she tries not to get attached.

I don't think the syringe had anything to do with that though.

Well, this fandom has lived nearly four years on a handful of episodes and a movie, so you can bet almost every subject has been covered and driven into the ground, as this one has. No biggie, though. "Inara's Secret" has always been a fun topic.

People speculate a few different things: that Inara is dying ("I don't want to die at all") or that she is doing something shady to keep herself nigh-immortal ("I don't want to die at all" ). There has always been a mystery as to what is in her syringe in Serenity Pt.2, and Joss says that it is not a suicide kit. A few months ago, Tim Minear told a group in a screenplay clinic that the syringe held a drug that killed anyone who had sex with Inara. But he also said this is not her secret.

Personally, I'm starting to think Inara might be a reluctant assassin, and left Sihnon because she was being muscled into it. Throughout history, there have always been women who on the surface looked to be simple seductresses, but were in fact spies or assassins. It also fits with what Joss said about companions in the Serenity Companion book: that after they retire, companions often take high political offices. It makes sense that the companion houses might abuse the power they have and take advantage of many of the high-ranking clients the women see.

That doesn't fit with her going back to the training house though.

Well, she's still in the guild, so she is on good terms with them. The training house was not in the Core, fairly far out... and perhaps far enough out that Inara felt out of the reach of those who would use her. She left very reluctantly, which means she felt she had no choice but to leave. Someone could be trying to blackmail her, or someone could be trying to strong-arm her to do something she didn't want to do. She was very talented; on her way to becoming head of the house. Someone might have wanted to take advantage of her gifts, and have her trained as a spy or assassin. Perhaps that is something hush-hush and only a few in the guild know about how companions are sometimes trained to do such work. Anyway, as I said, she's good with the guild, and there's no reason I can think of that she wouldn't take the job at the training house. And for all we know, it was a temporary job for her.

If they wanted to train her that way, and she refused and left, doesn't seem to me they would still be on good terms. But I guess there's probably more to it than that.

I've heard some mention the "eternal youth" argument and use the fact that she looks so much younger than Nandi. What works against this is that Nandi refers to Inara as "mei-mei", a term the writers seemed to love to through in there.

At the Serenity Flanvention, they had an event that had the cast that attended the convention give a live commentary on an audience choice episode. We all decided on OoG...

Not sure if it's available... myabe the convention people will release it sometime in the near future...
