this is probably going to sound really dumb, and someone may have already covered this at some point, but the serenity rpg book keeps mentioning "pulling a crazy ivan" and i havent seen any refference to that in the movie and i can't remember hearing it mentioned in the series, so i was just wondering if anyone knows what that is? ive been curious about it and figured that as the GM i should probably go find out so if anyone could let me know that would be awesome. thanks for the help

It's from the Pilot. That's what the maneuver is called, the one that they used to lose the Reavers.
You can also read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Ivan for more info on that note :)

It's mentioned in the pilot episode when the Reaver ship is chasing them. It's a naval term...

From Wikipedia...

Crazy Ivan is a U.S. Navy term for a Soviet submarine maneuver, characterized by any number of sudden and sharp turns, used by submarine crews to "look behind" them. Because of the acoustic distortions and noise caused by propeller blades, it is nearly impossible for conventional sonar to detect objects directly behind a submarine. So, with sudden turns, the area where the sonar is not effective shifts relative to the current heading of the submarine, causing previous gaps in sonar coverage to be revealed while masking known areas. This gap in sonar coverage because of the submarines own propeller is commonly known amongst submariners as "the baffles."

It's in the Serenity episode (first one in the boxed set), towards the end when they are escaping the Reavers. It's this sweet move that Kaylee and Wash do when they're leaving Whitefall.

It's also a key plot progression point in "The Hunt for Red October."
