This maybe old to some of y'all, but I was watching Serenity (Eps. 1) and it's shiny how Joss sets up the catalist to the "Out of Gas" episode right off the bat.

Kaylee is wishing to go parts shopping while on Persephone @ the Eavesdown docks, but Mal wants her to find passengers for Serenity, especially ones with money. Kaylee reminds Mal that the Compresser needs to changed and if "it blows, we drift". WOW, I can't believe I didn't make that connection.

What I found interesting/ironic was that in the episode Ariell, Wash and Kaylee are in the junkyard and Wash picks up what TO ME looked a TON like the Catalyzer in Out of Gas. He just glances at it barely and then tosses it aside for being the "nothing part" that it is.

Just logged out and checked the episode Ariel (thanks iTunes!). Yep, sure does look like Wash found the Catalyzer, and then flung it off like a piece of feyoooo. :) Shiny subtle hints :)

Hmmm , you know in the BDM when Mal slips into Inara's chambers in 'that outfit' and jokes , " Dear Buddha , Please bring me a PONY and a PLASTIC ROCKET " ?

When I watched the BDM the first time I asked my sister if she thought that was a foreshadowing . She didn't really see it that way , but the next thing you know , Serenity is being used as a "TROJAN HORSE" and Zoe ends up lighting a what ? Looks like a PLASTIC ROCKET if you ask me ! Anyone else see it like this ?

I don't think the connection is tenuous at all ; although it may be a little subtle . I think the message from Joss to Mal is to " be careful what you WISH FOR " , and even more ironic when cast in the light of Book's admonishment , " I don't care what you believe in , Just BELIEVE . "

I had posted in another thread (tho for the life of me, I can't find it now), so please pardon my plastering it here as well...

I had gotten the impression that "Dear Buddha, please bring me a pony and a plastic rocket and..." was actually just the many layers of the show.

pony -- it's a western
rocket -- it's also SciFi
Buddha -- with Asian influences
(overall sound of the quote) -- with an American, youthful voice

I'm not saying I disagree with your analysis -- apparently I need to go see it again, right now, to see what you're talking about!

Oh , when you mentioned the youthful , American "voice" , it also reminded me that when I saw the BDM for the first time and Mal asks River , " You understand your part in all this , little one ? " , and River counters , " Do you ? "
When Mal responds to her query , the voice he uses sounds just like Elvis ! Watch his face while he emotes and his manner of speaking !

" This is what I do , dahlin' . This is what I Do. "

Sounds just like Elvis .
