I just wanted to speculate on the different characters of Firefly, their stories in relation to time.

For example, Book has a secret, as do Inara and River. Their stories all deal with the past. Who was Book before? Why is Inara on Serenity? What did they do to River?

Mal, on the other hand, has no secret past. We know he is bitter from losing the battle of Serenity. His story is in the present, as he solves problems and gets the job done. As Mal becomes less bitter, we see there is hope for him in the future.

Jayne may have an interesting past, but there is no big secret looming over his head. He's just a greedy mercenary, living in the present.

Kaylee - no secret past, no real goals for the future. She is a character in the present, her story is about whatever is happening at the moment.

Simon's past - how how freed River - is very interesting. I would say his story is a mix between the past and his future with Kaylee. We will watch Simon relax more and more and open himself to Kaylee. Kaylee is waiting impatiently for him, Simon must free himself in order to be able to love.

Zoe and Wash, hmm. No secret pasts, but it could be interesting to see how their romance started; I would say they are characters of the future, as they argue over having a baby and Wash confronts his jealousy of Mal.

Adam said once, in the 'loon, that Jayne has a secret that had yet to be explored.

Agreed that Mal's story is the future, although he does have some bits of his past that I would like to see (what happened to his family, Shadow, POW camp, life after the war but before Serenity)

I think that Zoe and Wash have some stories in the past, but that the emphasis will be on the future.

Inara, the past, yes, but also the future

Kaylee in the present, agreed --shoot, they all have stories in the future . . .
