I love finding things in school books that relate to Firefly.

I'm reading The Canterbury Tales in my British Literature class, and last night I found this passage in the introduction (which, by the way, is ridiculously long for an introduction) for the Parson:

"He was a shepherd and no mercenary
Holy and virtuous he was, but then
Never contemptuous to sinful men,
Never disdainful, never too proud or fine,
But discreet in teaching and benign" (lines 510-514).

I find that describes Shepherd Book to the dot - he travels on a ship full of thieves, yet he respects each of them in their own way.

Also, the first line kinda made me think of the relationship between Book and Jayne.

I tell ya, little things like this make 8 hours of homework and going to bed absurdedly late seem like a walk in the park.

I'm actually reading "The Canterbury Tales" in British Lit to 1700 right now, but I guess I missed that part.

Of course, it could be because we're reading it in the original Middle English.

Anyway, we discussed the Parson quite a bit in class on Tuesday. Chaucer seems to be criticizing the structure of the Church in this passage; essentially, the other church members (the Monk, the Summoner, the Pardoner, and the Prioress) are all basically terrible at doing their jobs. In fact, many of them do things that are the exact opposite of what they're supposed to do, especially the Monk.

However, the Parson is a different story totally. He's the only one of the religious figures to be devoted to God; furthermore, Chaucer tells us that he only bends the rules when it's for the good of his flock (he doesn't excommunicate people for not tithing when they use the money to put food on the table).

/academic nerdiness

This sounds a lot like Book to me, too. But, I don't think we can say Joss took his inspiration for the character from Chaucer. There's just not enough evidence for that. However, I do applaud your ability to connect two things I love - medieval literature and our BDHs.

I wasn't exactly implying he did get his inspiration from Chaucer - I just thought it was interesting.

Thanks, though. It makes school more enjoyable.

Don't even get me started on how much I've seen "Parliament" in my history books, and I just recently saw the word "the alliance."

I dont know about finding things in the text about firefly but i like to write something about firefly in my books. I think that since everyone gets a book someones bound to read the quote or fact
