SUNNYJ

Hi there
Over the last week or so it seemed that there were a few wires crossed in regards to Joss' posting on whedonesque about a follow up to Serenity. Shortly after his first post online to quash any rumours that a sequel was in the works many sites (including ign)reported that the franchise was completely dead and buried.

The actual point Joss was getting across was that there isnt any plans at the moment. He has since posted again to reassure everyone.

http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=24456

I know that this has already been discusses on another thread but thanks to the lovely Followmal for this link. I say never say never. Im still thinking one day we will rise again.

JaynezTown,

SUNNYJ is correct.

Joss was trying to squash a rumour that he
was secretly writing a Serenity sequel and newspeople took that information out of context.

Here is part of his reply to the false rumour that he said NEVER. And he will not be keeping any Serenity news a secret.

All these rumor of projects or the death of projects... When the two worlds align and something actually happens, whatever it is, you guys know I'll be on this site as soon as I'm allowed to be. And I'll be very very clear. There is no news. Not never, just now.

He is writing a sequel to Serenity: Those Left Behind (the graphic novel) It is called Serenity: Better Days (comic book released 2007) and probably later released as a graphic novel. Joss is not secretly writing this either.

Well a lot of people thought that the firefly fans would not get a movie. Though, I have to admit the likelihood of firefly fans getting a sequel to Serenity or even a "real" continuation of the series is pretty small. But there is always reason to hope. I'm with Anonymous1 with NEVER SAY NEVER. As a relatively new fan to the series I can only hope to see another adventure into the firefly universe.

You're right Anony and right below the article is a button to contact the editors.

I sent them a very nice letter telling them that I usually love reading their site as it's so comprehensive and inclusive. They also reviewed Serenity wonderfully and I reminded them of this.
I used my best pleases and thank yous and also made the letter from my home address and my personal name. I want them to understand that I want the story straight as someone who reads their site, not just a Firefly fan. I didn't mention I was a Browncoat.. I just made it from me. I copied them to the link on Whedonesque and asked them to fix the story.
All of us should be doing this, as citizens, not just Browncoats. We need to have the record set straight. Everywhere.

fingers in ears... lalalalalalala I can't HEAR YOU!!!

that IMDB thing was wrong.. (what else is new??) I think it's pretty clear there will be a sequel.. when is unclear, but the if is definitely resolved.. too many hints.. there is a burning ember under all that smoke screen...

Now.. I would prefer a cable show like BSG with time to savor the characters.. but, that is less assured to my mind...

Seriously, another season on tv is more likely an option from a business perspective than another Serenity movie. I am sure that within the budget of say a Battlestar Galactica (damn fine show btw) a Firefly season 2 (and more) could fly. Keep in mind that Sci-Fi HEAVILY PROMOTED BSG, something that Fox never did. Heck, Fox never even understood the show. Everytime I watch BSG and it's promotions, I can't help but wonder why Firefly can't excel within that business model. Also keep in mind that these series make a lot of their gross from DVD sales, and while I own everything Firefly, BSG doesn't have replay appeal to me.

Cheers.

I couldn't agree more with the last part of you post. I have tried to watch a rerun of BSG myself and just thought to myself whats the point as I reached about 20 mins in. Now FF I have watched many times due to the fact that there are things happening all over the place in the back ground. I don't no how many times I watched the round the table having lunch scene before I noticed River taking Jaynes Bread roll as he passed on the bowl.

It's the little things that make this show so wonderful.

It's still unthinkable that a series this good is cancelled...i mean seriously, what were they thinking??

I sure hope that someday a continuation would happen...even if it would be under a different name. This series has so much more that could be built on...even with Wash and Book gone.

Don't worry NurseRobyn we're not going down without a fight. Browncoats don't know the meaning of the word quit!
We're all still here, holdin' the line and will be for the duration. Oh.. yeah.. we're also doing stuff besides holdin'. Hope you'll join us, just check out the news and posts that come round about taking action and keep up with the Guerilla Marketing forum that's right below the General Discussion one on the front page.

You've not been properly welcomed I don't believe.
New folks usually get a virtual browncoat from me and lots of food from others... I'd reckon the others will be along soon.

*hands NurseRobyn a browncoat that fits just right*

Welcome to the 'Verse... share this wonderful show and movie with everyone that you care about... new Browncoats equal a better chance at a sequel or miniseries. Universal owns SciFi.. could be that they'd consider the miniseries idea first.

I don't think they were thinkin' Whatawhiner! Not at all!

We just have to keep workin' and being here and helpin' more folks learn about the 'Verse. That's what will help get another series, or a movie or a miniseries made. More folks asking for it, willing to spend their money on it. That's what Universal wants to see.

Welcome to this wonderful site.. I hope you come to love it here as much as I do....

Haha thanks FollowMal, actually I was thinking of buying a few more copies of the series just to give them to my friends...if Universal is looking for sales as a green light to making more of the series, I might just do that!

...man, I just can't get over it...this series NEEDS more episodes!! I finished the series and the movie, it just feels like.......waiting, for the next season to start or something.

Anyway, glad to be on board! *puts on Brown Coat*

Speaking of browncoats, I want to get the one listed on the links, but it's like $500!!

don't forget giving the movie itself or getting oyour friends to buy the movie after they become hooked, b/c Firefly belongs to Fox, Serenity belongs to Universal, so what really helps would be the sales of Serenity.

Well to give you more of the story, there are two Fox's, network Fox, and the studio 20th century Fox.
The series was produced by the studio but was shown by the network. And it was the network that didn't get the show, pre-empted the show, shown it out of order and then cancelled. The studio was the one that allowed Joss to allow the show to be moved to another network, and ultimately allowed it to become a movie.

Also, the show is a great way to introduce someone to the verse b/c its a relatively slow and allows people to get attached to the characters. If the person is impatient then get them the movie, but the key really is get them hooked, and to help encourage the sequel, buy the movie. Buy the tv show too, b/c its great, plus im sure the people invovled, Joss Whedon, cast, crew get a commission from it.

I don't think it is necessary or even important to bring back the series without Wash and Book. Bring it back as it was in an earlier time and then when it is time to leave bring the movie in as a finale or a prequel to a finale. Personally I would prefer a series with the original characters to another movie, but would be thrilled with either.

Plenty of folks disagree with that notion.

And saying there's no reason to continue the show with 2 characters dead indicates that you havn't watched Joss' other shows. Neither Buffy or Angel made it through their runs without some big changes to the cast line-up. There was nothing to indicate that things would have been different with Firefly.

Besides, Joss and Alan have both said the plan was to kill Wash eventually anyway.

At the moment, I`m kind of hopeing for the `verse to continue in book form, perhaps with Joss writing the key novels and overseeing the others.
A lot of scope to take off in all directions here and if the sales are good THEN we will almost certainly get another movie or series.

Not what I meant, although after re-reading my post I can understand the confusion. The assumption has been that the two killed off characters, were the series to be re-made, would not return. I was just saying that it does not have to be that way. I was not saying that the series should not come back at all without them. Quite the contrary. I'm fairly new here so I did not know about the intention to remove Wash from the picture anyway. Your right, I am not too familiar with the rest of his work. I have watched Buffy once or twice, just never interested me too much. Sorry for the confusion.

On this radio interview with Joss, one caller asked him if he would do a series of Firefly like the Buffy comics, and his basic, general reply was:

"I can handle finishing these three" - the comic books that start with "Those Left Behind" - "but, if I were to do another season, it would have to be with the actors. Personally, the characters are only really whole when the actors put in their own specialness."

He also said that he could do something like a radio series with the original actors.

Just thought that was interesting.

He mentioned radio, but didn't specifically say a series. It could just as easily be the idea of a one-off radio play.

FWIW, as near as I can tell, the sudden mention during the Fanboy Radio interview is the first time Joss ever mentioned the idea of radio (although various fans have raised the idea previously).

Radio, Comics, expanded universe novelisations, thats the way to go right now.
Much the same sort of thing happened to Star Trek, Dr Who, Battlestar Galactica, and of course Star Wars.
Eventually, the money men in Hollywood will sit up and take notice if the franchise is still making money in a year or so and then we will get some sort of continuation on screen.
And, if the Firefly and Serenity DVD`s continue to sell as they appear to be doing, that will probably happen sooner rather than later.
Remember, we are now just over a year on from the movie release which usually means that most profits, if any have already been made. Hollywood dos`nt tend to think long term.
Yet, while doing my Christmas shopping I noticed multiple DVD`s of both Serenity and Firefly were for sale in a number of local retailers. Beside things like the LOTR and Harry Potter films, so they are clearly still selling.
