EVAN

I am so sorry if this has been brought up before.

Upon watching Episode 3 Bushwhacked again, I realized something.
I don't know if Joss intended this but it fits in the verse: The transport ship taking the settlers could have had the PAC's in it. Sounds crazy? Everyone was found dead; and the food and stuff was all intact. So maybe they just lied down? But one of them (the happy little scarface) didnt lie down. He turned reaverish, and strung up all the poor blokes to the roof.
Mal had assumed that upon looking into the darkness of the Reavers ways: he became it. That was always a laim story arch to me. But the PACS fits so well.
Chances are Joss hadn't even thought of the PACs yet, but it works for me.
Criticisms?

Are you having a laugh?

SILENCE

Ok, so then how did that trap get there? The trap Reavers leave for the rescue ships!

PURPLEBELLY

We know from the log extract that a special shipment is being carried. My feeling is that the air-bourne agent was devised for the Moovie, and that the Series would have used a food-and-beverage additive distributed by the Blue Sun corporation. Your idea is still fun though: if the special shipment is the target of the Reavers' assault and is a concentrated form of the additive which has an immediate psychotropic effect, perhaps they gave the settlers a dose, just for laughs.

BTW: is anyone working on an UR narrative? That is analysing elements of the movie that appear to have been introduced or changed because of the compression in the altered format, and constructing the narrative that would have emerged in the TV series. I can understand that Whedon has moved on and probably wouldn't find any interest in this, but the long movie shooting script would be invaluable.

I just watched this episode last night and I like your idea. I don't really think it's correct but I still like it.

Here's the part the doesn't make sense to me:

The reavers making the one survivor watch them kill the rest of the passengers. The impression that I get of the reavers is that they kill everything, without out a plan. On the show everything was left in place--the meals, the luggage--everything. If it was reavers, I would think they would have trashed the place.

Thank Universal for airing Firefly in HD at

I really like this idea. It is actually more consistent with a very glaring fact that is summed up by the line by Zoe after boarding the ship "No sign of struggle". This always seemed weird to me. I mean, if it was Reavers I don't think this is what the result would look like. Compare the state of this ship's interior with the chaos that took place when the Reavers showed up in that town in the BDM. Don't think Reavers would be the type to clean up and make things tidy afterwards. I mean, where is the blood and guts from the canniblism that should have taken place were it really Reavers. I think the exposure to Pax would be a great way of explaining all the facts. Yeah, there is that trap like the ones that Reavers set, but that could have been the one survivor's doing.

TRAVELER

I'm not sure we totally understand Reavers. They still are intelligent or they could not run their ships or set those traps. They also work together. They are a community. An insane community. So could they slip up to an unsuspecting ship and surprise the passengers and crew before they can put up a fight? Since Zoe and Mal discuss that the ship had a large number of people on board, I suspect the Reavers must have taken several onto their ship. In other words they don't seem interested in normal food. They left all the rations on the ship.

As for the PAX. It may have been a new form on board the ship. Something the Alliance wanted to try on a small number of people before effecting a whole planet. So the Reavers sensed this one guy was becoming like them and they kept him alive. So the people might not have been in any shape to stop the Reavers and the one surviver was well on his way to becoming one.

INDIGOSTARBLASTER

I've written this elsewhere, but this is what I pictured happening on that eerily neat ship.

They were on their way to settle a new planet. The proximity alarm sounded, they realized that they were being followed by a Reaver ship, and that they were doomed. They loaded all their kids onto the only lifeboat and launched it.

Then they went to the cargo deck, locked it behind them, and waited, knowing there was no escape.

We know that the Reavers are technologically proficient. They could see the ship wasn't capable of running, so they leisurely matched airlocks, picked their way inside(the better to use the ship as bait for more ships later -- if it was obviously Reaverized no one would be foolish enough to drop in), strolled around, sniffing hungrily, picked the lock to the cargo deck, and helped themselves to the resigned, only minimally struggling passengers ("Like sheep to the slaughter").

They realized that one of the ship's passengers was capable of becoming a Reaver, so they made him watch, and maybe did other things to make him into a Reaver, like exposing him to an engine running without core containment (they must do it for a reason -- maybe radiation poisoning has the same effect as the Pax).

Then they trussed up the corpses, cleaned up the blood, and carefully locked the doors behind them on the way out. Set the boobytrap for the would-be rescuers. Maybe spent their spare time tracking down that lifeboat they saw being launched earlier.

Ugh.

PIRATECAT

Naw man it's been discussed before but so has everthing else. I luv the archives. See to me its a reaver attack. Yet we never see em to the BDM. But the one dude is from West Virginia or reavers got into his head. Capt Reynolds must have come across something similar because Zoe and Jayne are scared and Capt is aware of the booby trap. The pax is a good notion but I think the pax came in the train job. The sheriff had Bodin's Malady and hadn't been in a mine. The air processors in BDM spread the pax. The sheriff said the ore processors caused the disease. I am just wondering if the pax came in different flavors for different things moons or humans. Or did the Blue Sun discover the pax by accident.

"Battle of Serenity, Mal. Besides Zoe here, how many-" "I'm talkin at you! How many men in your platoon came out of their alive".

LAWMAN

great theories! when mal and crew discover the dead bodies on the transport, they are corpses hung up together. i don't remember if they were skinned or not. could there be variations of the pax ? mutations? i also find the transport being in too clean and neat condition. as calculating and cunning as the reavers are, wouldn't it be messier? however, i do remember that even in the BDM, the entire city where the crew land is clean and tidy. no messes except for dead bodies perfectly preserved. in fact, even from the holo tape and the pax being explained, the inside of that ship is entirely too clean. i can certainly appreciate the theory that the pax has somehow infiltrated the inside of the transport. i wonder why none of the serenity crew was ever infected, cause they seem to have been exposed more than once.

i'll be in my bunk
