DEWRASTLER

This has been bothering me for some time, so I finally have to point out this little observation I had at the end of Jaynestown (I don't know if anyone's mentioned it before or not, but here I go).

So, during the celebration at the end for Jayne his old sidekick (Stitch?) arrives. He fires a shotgun blast into the air to dispurse the crowd. That would mean he knows has an empty shotgun shell in the chamber. Then he steps forward, and Mal steps forward as if to stop him, but Stitch points the shotgun at Mal. At this moment, its just a big stick. It can't fire, yet Mal stops as if he is going to be shot. Then Stitch steps forward, pumps the shotgun causing the empty shell to finally fall out and and new shell to enter the chamber, and fires the shotgun and hits the mudder.

My complaint is this, Mal should have known that he wasn't going to be shot. He was there to see the initial shot in the air. So why didn't he rush. He's been around guns enough to know the workings of a pump shotgun. It seems out of character for him to be stopped by a shotgun he should have known wouldn't fire.

Or maybe I just missed something, any comments?

Noticed the same thing. I think that's more of a writing or directing mistake. Not character.

My guess is even if they realised it while writing and directing, it is easy to get it wrong in editing.

The editor knows the storyline but maybe not even little detail, put it in the wrong order... and when the director or whoever watches it they've seen it so many times and know the story so well that it still makes sense.

Or it could be as simple as man who's used to having loaded gun pointed at him and even fired at him would pause momentarily before he realized it was empty...knee jerk reaction.

Have to admit I would hesitate. A gun pointed at you is not pleasant. If you watch the scene, Stitch's shotgun is on his shoulder. The pump is pulled back. When he points the weapon at Mal you can hear the pump slide forward and see that it is in the forward position when pointed at Mal. So if I were Mal I would assume the gun is loaded.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I heard it cock and whirr as it was pointed at Mal. So really the question is why did he cock it again before shooting the mudder?

I think directors or it could be producers like to hear the sound mechanical devices like guns being cocked or cars shifting gears, so they keep putting in the sound effects even though they aren't needed. I know that sounds stupid, but I can not think why Stitch would cock his shotgun a second time. I would blame the editor, but if they make a point of filming Stitch going through the motions of loading his gun twice than it must be in the script.

PS
PhoenixRose you really out did yourself with that WICCAN / BROWNCOAT signature.

I think that Ben Edlund is just not used to guns. Now, if it had been a spoon ...
