Casting choice for Firefly--intentional or coincidence?

As a longtime GENERAL HOSPITAL fan, I was shocked and also thrilled when Joss posted at Whedonesque a few months ago that one of his favorite characters of all time is "Anna Devane" from GH. Yesterday I had a "lightbulb moment" that never occurred to me before. Did the casting of Kimberly McCullough (the whore who betrayed everyone in "Heart of Gold"), who's played Anna Devane's daughter "Robin" off and on (currently "on") for many years, have anything at all to do with Joss being a fan, or was it pure coincidence?

Nathan was on One Life To Live ...And Sarah Michelle Gellar is From AMC . I have noticed that Joss uses many soap actors in his work. Maybe he is a soap fan.

I still cringe when I see HOG and sweet little Robin is playing a whore .

GH is the first show I ever remember watching with my mom from back when Luke & Laura started.

I'm very pleased to see I'm not the only soap fan on board here .

Let us not forget:
Michelle Trachtenberg played Lily before the current actress on AMC.

Emma Caulfield played Carly's nurse friend back when she was sleeping with Tony on GH.

Greg Vaughn (one of the frat boys in "Reptile Boy") is the current Lucky on GH.

Rudolf Martin (Dracula) played SMG's boyfriend/husband Anton on AMC.

Amber Tamblyn (Dawn's friend in Season 6) was GH's 1st Emily.

Tyler Christopher (an unnamed lawyer at Wolfram & Hart in ANGEL's first Faith ep. "Five By Five") is GH's former and current Nikolas.

The guy who played Niska on FIREFLY played one of Sonny's right hand (pre-Jason, I believe) several years ago.

I'm positive there are more I can't think of right now.

I remember Nathan from OLTL. I don't watch that show anymore. In fact, when I heard he was cast as the lead in Joss's new (at the time) show, I kept thinking, how in the world am I going to be able to get past the "Joey Buchanan" thing and take him seriously in this role? As opposed to SMG, he looked EXACTLY the same! Imagine my surprise when I not only did get past it but now consider him to be my favorite of all Jossverse cast members, and have since developed such a large crush on him that almost rivals my feelings for Joss!

How wonderful ! You reminded me of a few appearances I had forgotten about, like Emma Caulfield on GH ! Thank you .

I've always believed that Joss was snart enough to know that there was underused talent in the soap genre.

It took me awhile to see Nathan as anyone other than Joey too.
But now I'm also quite enamored with Mal
