I've been trying to find out and understand the sequence of episodes, the way they were intended to be shot/aired. I understand the air dates are not sequential, nor the sequence on the DVDs (all the cast mention Message was the last episode they did).
I haven't found it yet.
Is the following correct?

Ep 1. (pilot) Serenity.
Air date 20 Dec 02

Ep 2. The Train Job. Script date 8 Jul 02.
Air date 20 Sep 02.

Ep 3. Bushwacked.
Air Date 27 Sep 02.

Ep 4. Our Mrs. Reynolds.

I'm pretty sure Dead or Alive was intended to be filmed sometime after The Message (but not directly after; something about not wanting to have 'old war buddy of the week' going on) and none of the characters had really gotten to the point where it would have worked, especially Simon. Other than that, I think you're essentially correct.

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

As far as I understand it, the order on the DVD boxset _is_ the correct order in which Joss intended for them to be shown. The Message was the last episode filmed, but filmmakers don't tend to shoot things in the order that they intend to show them.

There are many things you only see once in Firefly. (To be honest I don't recall seeing it in the BDM either?) Absence of an item does not indicate order.

Every canonical source indicates that the order on the DVD is the order that Joss intended. Check any online source, or look in the visual companion.

Having learned some answers since this was posted,
This was the correct sequence.
HoG was yanked because the network goons freaked at the western motif of this episode, and this was apparently the reason the show was cancelled.
