Distant cousin or uncle at the very most. They do not interact like brothers would.

And since it wasn't actually mentioned in the episode, I'm not sure his last name can be considered canon at all, so... *shrug* I wouldn't place too much significance on this.

I can see it in front of me... Monty's trying to get up the holiday spirit, singing carols and all, while Mal puts on his best "I lost my faith and now I hate Christmas"-scowl, and Saffron is in the corner pouting because no one got her anything. Just because she tricked and nearly killed them all...

It's just not like it used to be when they were little. *sigh*

Indeed, and who could blame Mal for throwing his sprouts at Monty.

Well, I guess he'd deserve it for making Mal suffer through Christmas dinner.... If it had been U-Day on the other hand..!

Oh different story for U-day. That's license for a pillow fight right there! Still y'know I'd like to think that Mal would show up for Christmas dinner because his mother asked him to. I think he's the kind of chap who would do what his mother asked... and put out the rubbish (trash) after...

Monty and Malcolm Reynolds.... It does have a ring to it.

I think I remember a Joss interview or comment or essay or something about Reynolds being a very common name and thus Mal and Monty not having to be related just because they have the same surname.

I like the image of the two of them getting drunk on U-Day in a bar somewhere and cussing about "that redheaded bitch" before jumping head-first into a crowd of Alliance-supporters... *g* Monty would be useful like Jayne, only.. cuddlier!

Oh, and right on with the Mal and his Ma. Though I don't think there are many people who would have dared to refuse her bidding. She must have been a capable woman indeed, natural leader and all, to run a farm as a single mother and be that good at it. I bet he got his leadership style right from her. :D

"But Ma, I don't know whether seeing Monty at Christmas would be so good..."

"Why are we still talking about what's decided, Malcolm Reynolds?"

"Alright, Ma..."

Ha! Nailed it! You always know you've 'been told' when your name and surname are in the mix.

Oh the dreaded full name! You know you're in trouble then if you don't do what she says.

BTW I LOVE Mal's Ma. She's the synthesis of all the tough, savvy, "steel magnolias" of the South that tried to hold their families together during the Civil War and the hardy frontier woman that could give birth one day and the next she's out plowing with the baby strapped to her back. And the current crop of military spouses that somehow keep the car running while wiping tears from their toddlers eyes as daddy/mommy goes to Iraq/Afghanistan for the third time.

Of course I'm exaggerating a bit.

Where does it say that Monty's surname is Reynolds? I am certain I have read ti somewhere, but just cannot remember where.

If you want another conspiracy, Mal and Monty met on an uninhabited moon. Seemingly at night.

Now why would the alliance or anyone give a moon an atmosphere, have machinery there to make sire it had gravity and kept the atmosphere stable, but have no one live on it?

What if that was Shadow? A once inhabited world that could no longer support large amounts of life.

Another thing to add to the Monty and Mal connection - Mal was on that moon with no backup at all - not even a hidden Jayne. There must be a lot of trust there. Does that make them brothers? No. It does keep the possibility open.

In Our Ms Reynolds... didn't Saffron ask Mal if he had any brothers or sisters? Or am I just making stuff up in my head?

It's been a long time since I went digging through the archives but I seem to remember a thread that suggested Monty was Mal's uncle. I can't remember if this was based on inside information but the discussion that occured within the thread itself was pretty damn convincing.

EDIT: for anyone interested I suggest looking at some of the old threads in the "Firefly Episode Discussion" forum. There is some extremely detailed analysis. I wish I could go back into the "General Discussion" archives but everytime I try my computer goes berserk.

To get myself back on topic, I don't think Monty is any relation at all.

Saffron does comment on the "war buddy bond" that they both have. So they may have been in the same unit.

Also for some reason I see Monty as a senior sergeant to Mal, but not the first sergeant of the unit. He's not polished enough for that.

Definitely "war buddy bond" thingy. Of course, that's the only thing Saffron can 'smell' between them (as any half-way intuitive con artists could, btw). It doesn't mean they're not related. About the same age, could be they were regular buddies back on Shadow, and decided to join the war together. Not saying they are related; not saying they ain't; but the "war buddy bond" doesn't resolve the issue.

Senior sergeant to Mal? I'm buying. :) Sounds about right.

Nah, looking at monty I don't think they are the same age at all. Unless you declare that Mal looks a great deal younger than he is and Monty a great deal older than he is.

Monty appears well beyond the age of 40 to me. Maybe 50. Mal's nowhere near that age. I'd class him at 31 to 33, looks-wise and in terms of what development makes most sense to me. I know some people see Mal as older than that, but.. Mal and Monty the same age really does seem a bit of a stretch, visually.

Hmm.

Hard to tell though, underneath all that rough exterior, but yeah, Monty really does look older. I'd say about 5 years, at least.

According to the BDM deleted scene, Mal is supposedly in his fifties; now there's a real stretch! :) I don't buy it, though. I agree, Mal is a typical thirtysomething.

Bwah, yeah, the numbers on that screen have GOT to be a typo! Hee!

In fact, if you switch them into 2486 instead of 2468, that puts Mal at exactly 31 in 2517, at the beginning of the series, so I'm going with that. No way is Mal in his fifties, that would really throw his backstory! *G*

Penny for the smart lady! :) Hadn't thought about transposing those numbers; but 31 makes a great deal of sense. I always figured Mal maybe 35, tops, with Monty 42 or some such. But 31-33 is entirely possible from his looks.

When I said Mal and Monty are about the same age, I figured, from the level of equality between them, that they can't be too far apart. But Mal, say, in this twenties having a thirty-year old uncle who he is on equal terms with, even a 10 year gap like that is still quite plausible.

I swear I read somewhere (maybe in the Serenity visual guide), that Monty was Mal's cousin. Again, couldn't tell you where or when I read that.
