The opening of the BDM (for one) – leaves the impression of a sudden exodus from Earth –That-Was… any evidence for this? RPG or non-canon… I’m interested because it opens up a formative span of time if the exodus itself took generations – in fact the very mode of transport may have changed. The Alliance, like all systems of control – exists in part because it’s hard to imagine a time when it did not. However – the real HISTORY of the gradual coalescing cultural/political elements that BECAME the Alliance (and/or the multi-corps – and the Guild – and the Shepherds) could be interesting in itself. Well, to geeks like me at any rate.

On a linked note – and this is crazed AU speculation – what if the star system (galaxy – whatever) we know of in Firefly is just ONE that was colonised… I mean what if the hybridised Wild West feel of the ‘verse aint just an eccentric quirk of hard rim living… What if it’s West World? Or WAS originally – and nobody remembers that because Earth-That-Was is gone (or hiding). What if there weren’t Folly worlds – play worlds – what if, (originally – long ago) it was whole systems…?

Yeah – too much coffee I know I know…

Thought most of this was also included in the narrative discriptions, as well as the Companion books. Earth could not sustain, our numbers were so great. One distant system was found, with dozens of planets and hundreds of moons. Terraforming ships were sent to each of these which could sustain life. Terraforming took decades on each planet/moon. Spaceships left Earth, bound for the new system. Travel was so long, an entire generation never saw the outside of the ship.

Does that answer what you were asking? Or something else?

Not trying to confuse things, but I've considered speculation of similar realm. Star Wars says "A long time ago, far far away." Some consider humanoid life on Earth to be "seeded" or accelerated beyond the capabilities of evolution, so arriving from elsewhere, ala "Stargate". If so, our origins from off-planet are practically erased (save that discussion for later). Is Earth itself the transplantation medium for the off-planet ancestors of pre-Earth history? Are we descended from those "long time ago, far far away?"

Terraforming on the planets in the new solar system took decades. Hard to tell, for certain, what that BDM opening-scene exodus depicts. Them ships don't exactly look like luxury liners, more like cargo ships and the like, to carry heavy terraforming equipment and some such. So, my guess is we were witnessing the initial wave of settlers going on their mission to terraform the newfound planets.

Also, Earth-That-Was, was it ever fully emptied? Or was it kinda like Blade Runner, where only those who couldn't afford to live off-world remained stuck on earth? (J.F. Sebastian) We get the impression that Earth has truly been abandoned altogether. But what a logistics operation that must have been! Plenty of room for a fic, methinks. :)

I'm liking your West World idea. :) Great find! Unfortunately, I'm fair certain we only found ONE new solar system with planets and moons -- all orbiting a giant Blue (shifted) Sun?

I had figured the terraforming ships to be sent long prior to the people ships. They would be entirely different ships, and the terraformers would not need to meet the stringent safety needs of life-supporting ships, which could be made and perfected over the interveneing decades (on Earth). If the terraforming ship blew up or went off course, no life lost.
