In it, when River goes, "My food is problematic", Jayne says, "Girl's a mindreadin' genius..", but I have the DVDs, and I thought that the Message was set before OiS, which is when they finally talk about the fact she's a "witch", right?

Just a little thing that bugged me....

Of course, I always thought that Trash and the Message seemed a little like they were set after OiS...

Help?

Yeah, I think "The Message" was the last episode that was filmed. Joss put "Objects in Space" last, though, because it completed the story arc of River and Simon being accepted as part of the family (at least I think that's why). Plus, it ends the series on a happier note. But, there are people who watch "The Message" last anyway because it makes more sense for them. (I personally don't, but to each their own.)

Trash and the Message were indeed filmed after Objects in Space. But Joss loves OiS and wanted it to end there. Trash and the Message were never 'officially' aired (nor was Heart of Gold) and so... Yeah, bit of continuity problem. Just another checkmark on the list of reasons to be mad at FOX.

Joss said that OIS was a better summary wrap-up than the 3 eps he jumped it past. he felt it represented the characters equally, and was more resolution than the other eps.
Yes, it was not originally intended to be the last of the episodes that are completed, but when he said he "put them in the intended order on the DVD set" many took that as canon.

On the other hand, one could just argue that that's just something he said.
How many of us sarcastically called someone an f-ing genius when that person screwed up? And that was definitely before that person got officially recognized as an f-ing genius, if at all. It's a stretch, and the chaos surrounding the episode order is the real reason, but it's a good enough In-'Verse-explanation for me. La-la-laaah.
