OURWITCH

Hello there folks. I know that it's still early to think about, but I'm trying to figure out my vacation for the year and am torn between guitar camp and Dragon Con.

I've never been to a convention before, but there are a lot of great people that are going to be there.

Does it ever happen that people split rooms to cut down on the cost? Are their enough rooms available in the hotel where I can wait to book one for awhile? How far ahead of the convention do tickets usually sell out?

I appreciate the help. Keep flyin

This will be my 4th Dcon straight, and I must say it's a heck of a con to attend :). If you keep a low profile when checking in you can share rooms with other peeps if you want. Unfortunately my room is already booked, with 4 peeps on my wait list if anyone cancels that is already booked. I wouldn't wait to long to book cause the hotels do sell out fast. I believe if I remember correctly the Hyatt doesn't have that many rooms left if any. I don't think I ever attended when passes had actually sold out, but it is possible. Last year was defintely crazy, extremely crowded, but still worth going for sure. If you really want to attend a con, Dcon is defintely the place to be, good times indeed. You would be better going the whole weekend instead of a day or two, there is just so much to see, and do. Hope that helps a little....

Ya gotta see DC to believe it. It's a blast. I'm a native of Atlanta, and didn't give attending DC much thought, until I became a Browncoat.

It's not too early to be thinking about DC. Buy your tickets now, as prices increase a few times as the event draws near. You're not in danger of Con tickets selling out, just in getting a room at one of the Con hotels. NOW is the time to act, and if they're sold out, keep checking back. Folks might cancel at any time, y a never know.

Yes, folks do split rooms to cut down on the cost. Think of it as a big sleepover, w/ some of the best friends you've never met. ( Granted, I've not stayed over, I only live a few miles away, but all the really good stories come from folks who have stayed in one of the Con hotels. - And odds are you'll have a blast, just don't forget some basic common sense. )

Dunno how far you've got to go to make it to ATL, but if you've never been to a Con, then DC is THE Con you want to check out.

I'm going to this Dragon Con too. It will also be my first time. I know there are 3 Firefly actors going to be there. I already have a reserved picture thing with Adam Baldwin (I'm also trying a Jayne costume so that should be interesting). I was actually suprised not to see more here about Dragon Con...is it just too early?

This is actually my big vacation after I get back from Iraq, so I hope its going to be fun!

splitting a hotel room definately cuts down on cost, this will be my second year attending.

It is an absolute blast and somewhat mindboggling!

The hotels fill up quickly, I know the Marriot is sold out, but with some looking and posting you can probably find a roommate and even probably a room. there are also several other hotels within a block of the 4 official ones, you may be able to get into one of those, adn they are generally cheaper.

hiya noobs! This will be my 3rd straight D*C - I'll be marching in the Saturday morning parade with other members of the 76th Independent Battalion (ifn' ya see a bunch of us in uniform say hi); it is indeed a spectacle worth attending and experiencing; much like Sturgis (although without as many shiny motorcycles); the costumes are AMAZING - bring lots of film or extra digital camera cards as you will try to capture everything. I think the official D*C board has a thread for 'needing rooms or roommates' - hope to meet you there!

Better hurry if you expect to save some cashy money. I just paid for my membership today. The price changes from 75 to 90 dollars on the 15th of July.

This is not going to be very popular advice around here, but if you're young and in either high school or lower I would honestly lean towards the guitar camp and work on honing your skills with that musical intrument. There will always other conventions you can attend, and going to activities like guitar camp will seem odd at best when you're grown up. Take care of building your future's foundation now and you'll get to enjoy all the cons you want when you're all grown up.

Dragon Con newbie too. I've already got passes, room and flights booked (thank goodness I did it all in February, flights were MUCH cheaper! Even cheaper than driving now) Anything else I should do?

My daughter will be with the anime track most of the time so I'll be hanging with the Browncoats, pimping KNTR and generally having a good time.

No kidding about breaking in the shoes/boots before going! There are stairs & plenty of them. Comfortable to walk in may not be comfortable for stair climbing.

Already breaking in my trusty walking shoes. I know I'll need them as the motel is 2 blocks away but a little walking doesn't scare me. I walk 2-3 miles an evening at home.

Doesn't seem likely. I've little coin, and what there is keeps a roof overhead & fuel in the bike so I can get to/from work. I keep running the numbers but I just don't see it happening this year. Trying to save up for next year, shortening rations & such.

I'll be with the 76th in spirit, seriously hoping y'all outnumber the 101st this year so's we can demand that prime corner spot for mustering before the parade.
