No, not Serenity, The X Files: I Want To Believe feature film which debuted in 50% more theatres than us but still had virtually the same gross (and ticket prices have gone up since September 2005).

The X Files was a bona fide global phenomenon so I think we can take a little pride that our movie matched them punch for punch. I do feel bad for X Files fans who wanted a third film to complete the invasion storyline though.

We should be thoroughly proud .

X-Files had what , like NINE seasons , Right ?

We had less than half of ONE , and flown completely under the radar , too...

We have much to be proud of...We've done the Impossible , and we'll do it again...

Mighty Mighty...

this is not good news.
if tv off-shoot x-files (which the studio have pretty much thrown away - hoping for the xmas dvd market) doesn't gross then the chances of a serenity 2 just get bleaker.

just as the failure of BSG Razor does.

on the other hand, Starship troopers II and III
is the perfect example of how a movie made primarily to recoup via dvd and promoted in the right areas can turn a profit.

i always go back to Impostor - a half hour tv-episode that a network decided was TOO GOOD* so they expanded it, had a limited cinema release and did well on the dvd (or so i hear).

*possible prod speak for hell, we've just spotted an audience!

i make no value judgement on any of the product here - just the fact it exists.

Speaking about the movie itself, I have to admit I'm a bit bummed out over it poor reception. It doesn't surprise me since it opened after the juggernaut of THE DARK KNIGHT. But I was hoping that there was enough of a flame left for THE X-FILES from the fans.

Apparently not.

About the movie itself, I have to say that it wasn't really awful or anything like that. Yes, I was hoping for more of a continuation/wrap up of the expansive mythology, as opposed to a stand-alone story. And with the movie tanking, I'm guessing that part 3 that wraps everything up is now off the table.

One thing that I really loved and was glad to see them focus on was the relationship between Mulder and Scully. Just the scenes between them and the long history they shared and what it's like to see them after all these years got me more excited than for the actual mystery plot. Also, the Billy Connelly character was really interesting. I loved the scnee when Scully visits him by herself and tries to pokes holes in his "don't give up" comment.

**************************************************
"And it starts with a sentence that might last a lifetime, or it all might just go down in flames. If I let you know me, then why would you want me? Each day I don't is a shame. Each day I don't is a great shame."

i haven't seen it yet - but some friends said it was pretty good if you went expecting something like the tv show and not the last movie.

That's surprising, IMO! X-Files: IWTB was such a great continuation of the series. It felt like something you might find at the height of their success. Gillian Anderson especially shined in her performance. And, thank goodness it had nothing to do with werewolves!

I have yet to see it but....

It doesn't surprise me that it didn't do well at the B.O. First, to wait, what, 10 years to do the next X-Files movie well.....kinda blows. Whatever momentum CC had with the first film died a slow and painful death like 6 years ago. Secondly - TDN (which BTW is a fantastic movie) who in their right mind expects to go toe-to-toe with the 800lb Gorilla in the room.

I was an X-Files fan back when (along with my son who turned me on to it) and I'm pretty upset with CC for not following through sooner (for reals).
Still though I plan to see it.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

I think the problem with the x files movie is that the makers of the movie did not understand that it was not the right time for us to see it.

OK, I'll bite - why for is this not the right time for us to see it? (I assume you're not referring to the poor choice of showtimes at your local cinema cine-plex...) Or are you referring to its release so close to Dark Knight?

I didn't know there was a wrong time to see anything involving Gillian Anderson.

It was like Gillian Anderson was in it when we got here!

Here's hoping a longer run of the X-Files will up the numbers. Poor choice putting it in the running against The Dark Knight. That's just asking for it to die...

It would have helped if it had been a good movie. I was a HUGE X-Files fan and was excited to see this movie coming out this summer. I was vastly disappointed when I saw it.

Just read a report on the BBC website that in its first weekend here in the UK the X-Files movie only took £887,209 in ticket sales which is about $1,700,000. This is poor really and the people who have seen the film are not giving it a very good write up either.
