Yes, yet another show with a Firefly cast member has been canceled. Jewel Staite has starred as Dr. Jennifer Keller on the Sci Fi Channel's Stargate Atlantis the past two seasons. Well, there won't be a third for her or a sixth for the show. Sci Fi announced a few days ago that Atlantis won't be picked up for next year. Instead they will do a two hour direct to DVD movie to wrap up Atlantis' storylines and then a new Stargate will start in 2009 called Stargate Universe. You can get all the details at www.gateworld.net. Atlantis is still in its fifth season, with 14 more episodes to go. And by the way, last week's episode was Jewel's best ever on the show.

Three other Firefly stars are still going to be on shows in the fall. Summer Glau is working on the second season of Terminator: the Sarah Connors Chronicles and Adam Baldwin is continuing in Chuck. Both shows are great and well worth watching. And Nathan Fillion is currently making Castle, a TV show about a New York mystery writer who is asked to help solve crimes by the police.

OUT2THEBLACK

Is Skiffy preparing to embrace the Firefly fanbase in a BIG Way ?

I have to wonder , because Firefly skewed fairly young when it was on F-network , although the fanbase subsequently has continued to broaden and diversify , due to the availability and success of the DVD boxset...

What with network 're-purposing' , one has to wonder , does NBC / Uni-' VERSAL have visions of a Firefly Future , with the F*><-TV rights to Firefly due to expire in a year or two more ?

Red-haired stepchild subsidiary to NBC / UNI , Sci-Fi channel could re-air the collaborative , re-ignited FIREFLY there , assuring extra BANG for the scarce buck...

The Case is even more compelling when one considers that the synopsis of SG: UNI-'Verse features a youngish crew trucking around out among the stars , getting their open-ended trek on...

Quote , and LINK to Reuters Article :

"Universe" -- which will premiere as a two-hour movie in early 2009 and assume a regular hourly slot in the summer -- introduces a team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogrammed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe...

...The show will involve more space-based action than "SG-1" or "Atlantis." With the "Star Trek" television franchise having folded in 2005 and Sci Fi's "Battlestar Galactica" airing its final episodes next year, the network hopes "Universe" will become sci-fi fans' new favorite space-travel series.

'YOUNGER VIBE'

"We've had great success with 'Enterprise' repeats on Monday night, and there's an appetite for space opera as 'Battlestar' goes away," Sci Fi president Dave Howe said. "There's an opportunity to keep the space opera as part of our programming strategy."

"This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation," Howe said.

"We really don't want to be more of the same. It's going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe."

...Said co-creators Wright and Cooper:

"In 'Universe,' we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping-off point for telling stories."

Considering there's already a significant crossover among the fanbases of Firefly and
SG: Atlantis , and the the formula is in many respects similar , one has to wonder
if this could bode well for the future of Firefly ?

It is a truism , after all , that imitation IS the Sincerest form of Flattery...

Serenity is OUR Destiny...

This sucks royally...

I have come to expect that any series which treats it's audience as intelligent and creative will ultimately be doomed to the whims of the executives with more dollar signs in their empty heads than intelligence...

I wish they'd wake up and smell the future!

Destiny is a huge ship millions of years old, so common sence tells me the show will have a big cast. Hopefully they will sign little known actors and not recycle one's from Sci-Fi series past, it'll be a new show with new faces.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Kind of surprised at the cancellation. I thought the show was doing well. Last season wasn't one of their best, but this season has been shaping up fairly well and I've been enjoying it.

Read up on Stargate Universe and I am not shocked their are beating the dead horse of the Ancients again.

Really? Are there no original ideas in the writer's pool?

Bummer for you guys.... I never really got too much into either version of Stargate because there were already too many seasons to go through when I caught a few re-runs initially (which I did like) and I wasn't really impressed by the movie either (which is rare, because I'm a huge fan of Kurt Russle's work: The Thing, Escape from NY, Escape from LA).

I'm sure there will be plenty of made for Sci-Fi movies though to fill in the slot. Nothing like low budget movies created as if they were Hollywood movies.

Man I miss the old Troma days....

Where's the sequel to They Live that I've been waiting 20 years for?

actually if you read the articles over at gateworld, they kinda decided to quit while they were ahead, so to speak. it was a mutual decision between mgm, and Sci-fi, to stop now while it's still poplar and drawing good numbers, instead of letting it go down hill...

I was so sad at the cancellation news for "Stargate Atlantis" as I love the show but the writing really was on the wall when they first killed off Carson Beckett and then killed off Dr Weir. I have this weird feeling that Beckett was killed off to test fan reaction with the option to bring him back in a limited capacity if there was enough furore, which there was. With Dr Weir's character I think her removal was to facilitate bringing Amanda Tapping onboard when SG-1's final season ended. I remember reading somewhere that the writers had always wanted Amanda on "Atlantis" but her commitment to SG-1 made it a non runner so they had to wait until that series ended.

Although I was very upset at the loss of Torri Higginson from the show the creative way her character was tied in with the replicators was great writing. However, I personally think they could have brought her back if they had wanted to and had offered her a better deal than the odd guest appearance to fill in gaps after Amanda Tapping bowed out to work on the Sanctuary tv series idea. When Amanda left that would have been the golden opportunity to bring Dr Weir so great disappointment that they did not appear to explore that option. All in all messing with the series when it wasn't broke was a bad move.

So many times you invest your heart and soul in a series only to find it has been cancelled, often before it has time to really hit its' stride. At least "Atlantis" will have had five seasons and there is a movie to look forward to. I just really wish that when the Powers That Be are thinking of axing a show there was some kind of forum where they could elicit feedback from the fans. Now, wouldn't that be a novel idea?

Ditto and ditto! They Live was one of the most surprisingly intelligent just-for-fun movies I ever saw. I loved the part where the two guys fought until they were completely worn out.

Open letter to whoever decided to end Stargate Atlantis this season: YOU SUCK!

You made a lot of very good points in your post. Your last is your best: I agree that's an excellent idea. Get the fans' opinions.

As far as audience feedback goes, Amanda Tapping said Sanctuary is going to try to have that quality (receptive to their fanbase, ARGs, interactive story ideas, etc). I look forward to seeing if it pans out.

Well, I've seen bits and pieces of SG-1, which ran for ten years, so I can't really say if its good or bad, and that's a long marathon if you pick those up. But I've seen all of SGA and its mostly good stuff, with some fantastic stuff here and there. The first season was fantastic and then it's slid a bit but now its picking up the pace again. Some major character changes didn't help. There are some story arcs, but a lot of episodes are one offs. A bit of romantic tension between characters is there, but it's not a space soap opera by a long shot. Its very heavy on science and many episodes revolve around solving a problem in the nick of time to save themselves and/or someone else. The Wraith are great baddies, but some others are just so-so. So far the fifth season has been really much better than the fourth. Hope that helps.
