Like many of you I suspect, I became a Firefly junky (best damn show ever!) and eventually, after watching the entire series about 20-30 times ;-) wanted to explore other parts of the Whendon verse. So I picked up the first 2 seasons of BtVS. First season was okay, and I know it helps make sense of things in the later seasons, but by about half-way through season 2 I started seeing why there a so many Buffy fans also. Still think Firefly is unbeatable, but by the end of the 2nd BtVS season I was totally hooked.

Anyway, having seen Firefly so many times through, I know the scripts pretty well. Always thought the writing/dialog was utterly amazing and unique. But while watching Buffy I started seeing the foundations for many of the best lines in Firefly be spoken during Buffy episodes. For example, in "Inca Mummy Girl" Xander uses the term "man parts" in

Quote:

Hold on a sec. So, this person who's living with you for two weeks is a man. With man parts. This is a terrible idea.

and in Becoming Pt1 Zander conducts a "puppet" battle between 2 fish sticks - the early form of Walsh's dinosaur battle in the Firefly pilot.

Quote:

Xander: Tell Angel I'm gonna kill him! No, wait. I'm gonna kill you!

He starts to repeatedly stab the toothpick into the other fish stick. The camera pulls back and up to his face.

Xander: Die! Die! Die!

There were more of these in just the first 2 seasons. Forgive me if this is already well-covered ground, but how many other Firefly lines actually occurred first, in some form, in Buffy or Angle ?

Well, there's at least one instance of Buffy (or was it Cordelia?) being handed a trinket, and going, "Ooh - Shiny!" :)

Seems that "shiny" is used on more than one occasion.

In Buffy Episode #1: "Welcome To The Hellmouth"

Willow: Well, what's in it for me?
Xander: A shiny nickel!

In Buffy Season 5 Episode #98: "Spiral"

Orlando seems fascinated by the medal or amulet hanging around the general's neck. He reaches out to touch it.

Orlando: Shiny.
Gregor: Yes, I suppose it is.
Orlando: Pretty little girl, she's shiny too.
Gregor: (to Dante) Watch him, make sure he's comfortable.
Orlando: So shiny. Pretty little shiny key.
Gregor: The key? You've seen it?
Orlando: Pretty ... little shiny girl.

In Buffy Season 6 Episode #114: "Older and Far Away"

Buffy is still on the ground, facing the other way.

BUFFY: Run off, huh? Afraid to face a true warrior?
She gets up and sees the sword.
BUFFY: Ooh, shiny.

In Buffy Episode #54: "The Prom"

Buffy: (to Willow) We'll get you a dress. You know, we should check April Fools.
Cordelia: Don't go there! I shop there.
Xander: I myself am dipping into my road trip fund to procure a shiny new tux, so look for me to dazzle.

In Buffy Season 7 Episode #123: "Lessons"

ANYA
God, they’re depressing.
HALFREK
Oh, who are they kidding with that happy shiny crap?

In Buffy Season 5 Episode #83: "No Place Like Home"

Buffy: I put this before the group. What the hell is it?
Giles: It appears to be paranormal in origin.
Willow: How can you tell?
Giles: Well, it's so shiny.

In Buffy Episode #67: "Doomed"

Spike: “You want me to tear this place apart, you bloody poof?”
Xander: “That’s it! I am way past due with you. I hate to break it to you, oh impotent one, but you’re not the big bad anymore, you’re not even the kind of naughty. You’re nothing but a waste of space – my space! And as much as I always got a big laugh watching Buffy kick your shiny white bum ....

In Buffy Season 5 Episode #86: "Shadow"

Glory: (trying on a shoe) Please, call me Glory. And get up, looking at you is hurting my neck.
Dreg: (gets up) Forgive me, shiny special one. I beg of you to rip out my inadequate tongue.

In Buffy Episode #6: "The Pack"

Xander: Buffy, this isn't just about looking at a bunch of animals.
This is about not being in class!

Buffy: (brightens) You know, you're right! Suddenly the animals look
shiny and new.

In Buffy Season 7 Episode #144: "Chosen"

BUFFY
Faith still has my room…
SPIKE
Well, you’re not staying here! You can’t buy me off with
shiny beads and sweet talk...

In Buffy Episode #47: "The Zeppo"

Xander: (faces her) You think you know everything.
Cordelia: (steps up to the counter) I think I know you.
Xander: That's a laugh.
Cordelia: (tauntingly) Oh, what, you got a shiny car, and now you're
someone new? Like anybody even cares about...

And these are just from the dialog. The scripts are filled with scene descriptions that also use the word "shiny" in the Jossian/Firely'sy way.

Zoiks, NBC - I can only think of one word to say to all that:

SHINY!

Mike
