So what happened to River? From the episodes Fox graciously allowed to be made we can infer that the BSC nabbed River for the purposes of creating someone with psychic powers, but also in "Objects" I got the impression that either her physical prowess had been improved or she had been recruited because of her affinity with dance as a child (someone who could be trained Nikita style). Did they choose her because she is a genius at everything she does and if BSC could give her ESP (pardon all the acronyms) as well, then she would be the perfect assasin. Alternatively, she may have already been partly psychic, I think Simon says that she has always been very intuative, and so THIS could be the reason she was targeted.

Also there is the question of what happened to her once BSC had her. She was with them for a number of years, and apart from a very brief glimpse of her strapped down in a chair attached to wires (like a cross between Clockwork Orange and Gunn's Law 101 accelerated course in ep501 of Angel) we have no idea what it was like. I picture a mental hospital type environment, with doctors in blue gloves walking in pairs down the corridors, and all of the "students" living in abject terror. And that is a point: it is incredibly doubtful that River is the only person ever to have been recruited and adjusted like this, and if any other episodes are to be made I would like to see some students who had completed the whole process and been turned into bad guys(and watch River kick their ass!. In the commentary for "objects", Joss mentions that River and Early are alike in their ability to read people, so just gives an idea of what a villian in a story could do with this ability.

Finally, I had a nasty thought about River: she obviously was broken out of the school before the program was complete, and is therefore only half insane. What if this is also the reason she is not already a Psychic assasin, or even more scary, what if she is a sleeper? If she had been given some kind of mental programming, something that would manifest itself after her physical and psychic training was complete, then she would become a time bomb - someone who can use powers obtained from darkness in a positive way, at least until something happens to make them turn - instantly - into an evil nemesis of the whole show. Sound familiar?

If anyone else has any thoughts I'd love to read them.
