I would stop worrying about Dollhouse now. It's in production right now, one can only assume that shows go through many stages while in production before ever airing. I'm sure Joss planned for this, especially after Firefly, and is working to get his vision across.

If you start worrying about Dollhouse now and say that it's crumbling, people are just going to spread these rumors and the show is doomed before it ever hits the air.

Still seems to be very much a case of 'we heard from a guy who knew a guy... bla bla' and it's still the case that Buffy had to reshoot the pilot with last mnute alterations, Angel had pre-production worries - firefly had two versions of the pilot and Morena was an 11th hr casting switch... and Joss and Tim thought Safe was crap and re-wrote it from scratch - and then threw out another episode altogether.

A lot of the comments after the initial rumour (on zapit, i think) were plain hi-larious!
"I can save Dollhouse - Joss should listen to me!!" etc etc

F-X have a well deserved bad rep for dumbing down their shows - but, given the success of Dark Knight and a few other things, i'm not sure how 'light' execs want to go this season.

As for the whole - but 'who will the audience identify with' question - i don't get it, but i guess that could just be me.

It's also curious (though i CAN understand nervy fans) just how quick a LOT of these 'Joss is going down' stories get up on the net - disgruntled folks maybe? As ever the ratings issue is mis-reported, Angel Season 5 clocked extremely good ratings, much higher than Buffy - BSG achieves profit primarily through DVD sales... and it's all more complex than the dubious rating system anyway.

I don't know. Even though the people involved are different than those involved prior, birds of a feather flock together. As in, these ones aren't going to be too different in mentality. Combine that with the fact that Joss likes character based stories, fairly complex stories (at least relatively speaking) and taking the time for the stories to naturally develop (i.e. not force things) and the fact that FOX doesn't like any of that and we've got a recipe for disaster.

I'm thinking that there are problems. Or at least there are problems fighting with the execs trying to get Joss' vision of the show done. That said, we're probably at least going to get a pale-er version of what Joss intended, if only for a couple episodes.

Wonderfalls anyone?

Who's surprised? Joss handed them another very difficult show to sell. I've heard this story before. The execs got their Joss Whedon show that they rubbers stamped because of his name. The execs can't figure out how to sell it to the mass audience and now panic sets in. I can't blame them on the panic. I can only blame them on rubber stamping the deal without knowing what they're getting into. Let Joss go to cable where he belongs. He can get the ratings that will be respected there but his character driven shows with wacky settings will not fly on network TV.

I still stand by my thought that Joss needs to drop the crazy settings and give people something they can relate to for once. Don't tell them it's a character driven show going in. Just show them cops or lawyers or doctors or something they understand. Dolls make people furrow their brows and move on.

Zeek's comment re. cable is a good one. F*x need big numbers from day one and, Joss' claim notwithstanding, this show doesn't look at first glance to be the sort of thing that they can sell easily to the uninformed (ie never seen Buffyverse, Malverse before.) Also bare in mind that Joss hasn't had Buffy big publicity for a while now - don't overetsimate the length of people's memory for the folks behind the camera.

On cable, Joss can build audience for a couple of years without the need to start huge. I'm just not sure then how easy it will be to transfer from a cable station to the major league (Network.)

Joss can't help the fact that so many network execs are idjits !

It's not those folk that he's writing for...

As for the cop show/doctor/lawyer bit , well , Joss jus' don' playdat...

It's the folk who furrow their brows that he wants to reach...

He wants to invade peoples' dreams , ya know...

So far , it's working !

Eliza had a deal with the F-network ; she asked Joss to help develop a property for her , and the rest is history...

Ms. Eliza Dushku is welcome to invade my dreams at any time , without prior notice...
