Not really. Ya gotta figure yer tryin' to grab an apple that might have already been bitten or slobbered on by the people in front of you, the water has already had faces in it, and with it being cold folks are snottin' and stuff in the water. Yeah, kinda gross really.

I never did the apple trick either. Never thought how unsanitary it is. It is not as if I have not done unsanitary things. But I will leave that for another discussion.

I hate carmel apples. I have a small mouth and the carmel makes them slippery so I never get my teeth to bite in to one.

Hey y'all.

I don't think I ever bobbed for apples, though I know I was at parties/events where bobbing was going on. I've just never been very interested in putting my face under water with my hands behind my back, call me crazy. Never thought about the germ issue as a kid, but given my germ sensitivity now, probably not such a bad thing that I never partook.

So speaking of candy apples and Halloween and all that fun stuff, maybe you guys can help me brainstorm a bit. I hit a pretty bad flare last week, so my health is back in the dumper and I'm back on pain meds. I'm doing my best to cut this flare short (ie, not 3-6 months) by sticking to my diet 100%. That means nothing processed, no sugar, no corn syrup, no artifical sweeteners. Right before Halloween. Crap.

So I've been trying to come up with options for Halloween candy. I have a type of ice cream I can eat and a recipe for cookies that works for me, but I haven't been able to find any candy that I can eat. Not one single thing. We have a party to go to on the 31st, which should be a blast but I'm not sure I'll get to enjoy any of the food.

And while we won't have trick-or-treaters (we'll be gone anyhow), every year they do a round of trick-or-treating at hubby's office, with the kids who are too little to go door to door. I went last year to hand out candy and had a blast. I really want to go again this year, but I feel weird about handing out candy that I can't eat. Everyone knows each other there, so something homemade would probably be ok. I'm just not sure what. Cookies? Like sugar cookies in shapes (using evaporated cane juice) maybe? My other thought was homemade popcorn in little baggies -- I'd love to find little orange jack-o-lantern bags, but I'm not sure if they even make them that small.

Anyhow, any thoughts? I'm trying really hard not to get depressed about Halloween. Thanksgiving always makes up for it (since I cook everything myself, and can make sure it's all safe), but the time between then and now is rough. Especially being back on the pain meds, sigh.

Oh, and one other question -- any thoughts on alcohol? ^_^ I'm going to a convention this weekend (Zeek knows what it is!) and there will probably be a lot of drinking at the little convention bar and at restaurants, I think. But I've recently realized how little I can actually drink, especially because I like sweet drinks, don't really like anything just straight or on the rocks, and don't really like beer. I've figured out that I really like extra dirty vodka martinis, but most places won't make them dirty enough for me. At home I drink vodka and cranberry, but only when I can buy the cranberry juice myself, and be sure that it's 100% juice. So drinking out is gettig harder and harder -- of course, right around the time of all the parties and fun stuff. Sigh.

Anyhow, if you guys have any ideas, let me know. I don't know what the point of autumn is without treats and alcohol.

CK! I'm so jealous btw. I was worried when I got to the paragraph about your flare that you weren't up to going anymore. Glad to hear you're going anyway. That's the spirit! I bet you're going to have a great time.

As for halloween stuff I bet they do have little halloween themed bags you can put popcorn in. Mainly because I know I've seen people make popcorn balls to give out and I've seen them in little halloween bags. So, you might be able to find something like that.

I'm not much help on the alcohol though. I bet some others will be of better help.

Ck ok waaaaay cool idea of the popcorn balls I bet the little ones would love that and their parents would like them getting something not so processed:) Also you could do pully candy with cane sugar or homemade caramels( I have recipes if you need them)
HUGS sorry about the flare up sweety...hmmm well why don't you contact whoever's throwing the party and ask if you could bring some appetizers or a dessert and then you'd know there was something there you could eat.
You do know you can specify to the bartender I want a vodka martini ( practice at home and figure out how much olive juice you like in the martini) with 1/4 oz or 1/2 oz of olive juice. They have the measures there and most bartenders really want to make it the way you like. Have you tried a vodka martnini with a lemon twist? Also try an old fashioned or a sidecar

Hmm elementary school things that seemed stupid... I'm not much help there as I went to a private school, but I did hate it when we all had to do those ridiculous school programs

bumping with a ponder...well more a frustration

I've been doing evals of 5-6 year olds with major behavior issues and all of them know swear words and sexual language I didn't know at anything near that age and until college in one case seriously what in the hell is going on that a 5 year old kid can use the C word ( and spell it) or that a 6 year old calls his teacher a dirty whore... sorry just disgusted with parents who have either got home situations or something else that has exposed kids to abusive language like this...so my ponder/question is do you think exposing your kids to this is child abuse?

I don't think it's abuse. I'd call it poor parenting because I would hope I wouldn't expose a child to that language. I think that stuff is sort of up to parents though. Some people really don't believe that sheltering their kids is the right way to go. That's pretty much their right IMO.

To me abuse is something that should involve taking the children away. I don't fit this under that category.

Here's a twist that the kids will love. In the center of the popcorn balls, put a wrapped treat, like a jawbreaker or square bubble gum, the kids love it and it's out of your sight. Did that for treat day in Kinder, and all the kids loved it.

I give a blanket sympathy hug, not knowing you personally or the circumstances behind the flare up, but anything that causes pain I wish was better.

well the kid's not just using the C word he's saying " you f'ing C you should die like the f'ing C you are" to the teacher. That seems like less sheltering and more the kid has overheard sentences like that and I'd definitely classify that as verbal abuse. But just using the C word ( since the kid does actually know what it means) is not a good sign at all. Plus it's ok to decide not to overprotect but a kid saying those sorts of words is in for a world of trouble at school and is likely to be labled as a problem kid. It's fine if you let your kid use whatever words you want at home, but it's a bad idea to let them think it's ok to say anywhere..
I'd say violent aggressive behavior in front of your kid is definitely abuse. It cause all kinds of emotional problems and psychological damage and I'd say teh F word is common usage enough that the kid could easily have picked it up in a myriad of situations but the C word is not one that gets said in movies or in public for the most part so he more than likely heard it at home and if he uses it in an aggressive context then that's likely the context he heard it in... hence my thinking that something else is going on. I'm all for people having the right to raise their kids the way they want, but if they'r going to expose their child to a lot of profanity and allow the kid to repeat it at school they're going to have to expect a lot of parent teacher conferences with the school psychologist ...

So if you like your kid to talk like a sailor on shore leave make sure you tell him/ her to pretend to be a nun/pastor at school:)

New post for the ponder. It has a lot to do with the home situation, and if they think that kind of language is common and appropriate, that's an indication of the home life, and you can bet that there is worse going on.
So the answer is yes, abuse.
My dad was a police officer for 20 years, and most of that as a school resource officer, and the leading detective on child abuse cases, and what little we heard about that, this is pretty common.

I think you'd need to be able to show the psychological harm the child is experiencing. At that point it's not really a concern about how the parents caused the harm as much as just getting the child into a better environment. That's just the way I look at it though. I don't see the kids on a regular basis and I'm not a parent. So, big grain of salt there.

wtF?
that...sounds like a huge parenting problem. first off them even saying stuff like that in front of the kid, and second them not drawing the line by telling them 'this is stuff you dont repeat ever' if something does slip out that the kid shouldnt hear. but yeah thats..thats pretty gorram bad if the kids obviously think its okay to say that kind of thing. and the fact that he knows what it means, which means its been explained to him (and it really shouldnt have been, not at age five or six) indicates some sort of issue on the parents' part as well. but thats just me ><

OK thanks guys this helps me balance and realize it wasn't so much the language that bothered me but that the imagery the kid used and the abusive tone of it indicates one angry little munchkin... I think the big thing is say whatever you want at home just be sure your kid knows there's a time and place for that language and school isn't it....( well elementary school and probably junior high) You don't want your kid being the one who crosses the principal's doorway constantly and ends up labeled.

Is "glad that there isn't one" a fair answer? A great part of Austin is no snow! If I could convince my family to celebrate christmas down here I would. Stupid snow.

I can obviously survive snow. I can put up with it. I don't like it though. If I had my choice I'd probably never live in a snowy location.

Not enough to make it worth it. I do take my daughter sledding a couple times a season but not enough to make me like the snow. You can't just decide to go out and "play". You have to put on warm clothes, then put on snow pants, then you jacket , hat and glove... oh and a good pair of boots. Too much work to go outside for a few minutes. Oh and did I mention it was cold???? Blah!

MsB, I find your language both offensive and disparaging. Please tone it down.

It is apparently a very old word, being traced back to the late 1200s, all versions of which seem to have a similar meaning....

As for the complete origins of the term, needless to say, I didn't really dig into it.

Utah is next to Nevada, and we have no snow, just a light frost. Bummer, I have a 12 year old who needs a whitewash.

We haven't had rain in months (a few sprinkles) and it went from sunnier than hell to gray and snow. Should be about 75 degrees and hot by Tuesday, IMHO.
